I was thinking about what to do with Kent last night. I don't think he has a real future at the Cats, and its hard to see us just delisting him - he would have too much value.
So then I thought about which club he would be of most value to in a trade, and I came up with ...
... the Bulldogs.
Here's why:
(1) A lot of Kent's problems are due to a misalignment between the way he plays and the way the rest of the team plays. Our midfielders do not have the best foot skills in the comp and tend to bomb it in to the 50, which suits big pack-marking types like McCarthy or Ottens. Kent on the other hand is a quick leading player, and if we had the ability to hit him lace out when he does lead, he would be much better. So which side has arguably the best foot skills in the league? The Bulldogs.
(2) The Dogs have played with small forwards all year, using players best suited to the midfield or flanks/wing - Johnson, Murphy, Robbins, etc. They are crying out for a key forward, and Kent at about 193cm and with a lot of experience at FF, would fit the bill.
(3) We have all bagged Kent mercilessly over the years, but the fact is that he has kicked 50+ goals in at least two seasons, which is a very good return considering what I said above. I would suggest that he would give the Bulldogs an extra 10-20 goals a season than he would give us, which should in theory make him quite attractive to them.
I don't expect we'd get a lot for him, but I think maybe a 2nd/3rd round pick might be a good result for us, or even a decent ordinary player that would fill a need (like Eagleton).

I think Kent will be at GFC next year. Everybody knows he's had a shocking 2006, but everybody knows that when in reasonable form, he is good for a couple of goals a game plus a few assists. He's rarely injured (apart from the start of the year; more than we can say for McCarthy) and 4 goals in the VFL last weekend indicates that he may be making his way back.
Maybe T. Hawkins WILL be the saviour we're all hoping for, but it won't be next year. While Tom is still in the development stages I am v. confident that Kent will be playing seniors at GFC.
=or even a decent ordinary player that would fill a need (like Eagleton).
We don't need FOUR baldies on our team!

I'm not expecting Hawkins to be the savior next year. I've been one of the people saying I wouldn't like to see him play more than half the games next year, and those should be mostly in the second half.
And in fact, I would be saying this whether Hawkins was coming or not.
Our key forwards until last week were Mooney, Ottens and N Ablett, and I would suggest that combo would be more potent next year with more experience under NA's belt. McCarthy showed last week he might have something to offer as well, and Playfair has been out of form but only earlier this year was described as one of our most important players. Lonergan is also on the list (for the moment), and Grima has reportedly been showing some good signs in the VFL. And then there's Hawkins.
I just don't think Kent adds much to all that. While we've had moderate success with him he hasn't solved our key forward woes because, as I said, he just doesn't suit our style of play at the moment. And he will be 28 next year, so I think it might be time to trade him to someone to whom he can offer more, while he still has some value.

I don't think Kingsley's problems are the way the team plays. He gets plenty of pinpoint delivery. What is the problem is that he:
1. Can't mark in a pack
2. Can't mark overhead
3. Won't mark in front of his body on the lead
Kingsley gets plenty of opportunities on the lead, but he insists on marking on the chest. The better defenders (and there are plenty of them) are able to get a fist in. He still does this - indicating he is either slow to learn or unwilling to change.
Don't blame Kingsley's appalling output this year on Geelong's delivery to him - because it's just not true. I think when playing well Geelong's footskills are fine.
Kent should be either played in another position up the ground to see if he has any value to the squad for next year if this doesn't happen the he should be traded. If no one wants to pick him up then de-list him....simple as that.

Hawkins is unussually well developed for his age. All reports suggest Hawkins can be expect to play pretty much from rd 1 next year. I think Tim Watson wrote that had draft rules been different he could have been playing 1's in the AFL last year.
I actually agree that Kingsley would do very well at the doggies. He is perfect for there style of playing (except for his convertion rate). Don't think it will happen though.

When I read that I was like there is Paul Chapman and David Johnson.. how would he be the fourth? Then I realised Tom Harley is bald too :( I don't like him being bald, it makes him look like a cancer patient.

I think he will be at Geelong in 2007, and if he struggles again, he will probably retire.
He has things going well outside of football.

Have to agree Chappy. You can say what you want about the abilities of Kingsley and co. but to say they've had pinpoint delivery is absurd. Geelong gives its forwards some of the WORST delivery in the league.
My mail is Richmond has approached KK with an offer of 900K over three years.
Trade would obviously need to be worked out and hasn't been discussed yet, but he has certainly been approached by Richmond.

Does everyone here forget the silence that goes over the crowd when HE HAS THE HBALL IN A SET SHOT FOR GOAL 20 out infront, 20 out on an angle, 50 out (ohh no he's looking to dish off)
get real guys he is paid to KICK GOALS
is he was great at this you could forget the lack of defensive pressure, inability to mark if not bullseye on his ***, can't pick up off ground, when in broken play with the ball worst descision maker in the team, ohhh and yeah the famous fingure pointing to EVEYONE ELSE on why everything is going wron for him.
I am so ****ed of with this jerk i would not resign as a member if he is ther next year on principal

I think he will stay on but he'd damned well bloody work hard if he wants a game in the seniors with NA and Tom Hawkins to come into the team. I think the midfield has certainly contributed to his poor form lately, as their delivery has never been fantastic given his (stubborn) playing style. If he was a better overhead mark then it wouldn't be so much of a problem, but one still can't argue that the delivery could be much better.
Hopefully he will work on those deficiencies but I am beginning to wonder if it's too late for him now. As it is, from what I can gather he's a successful businessman so it's not like he'll be back to digging ditches or playing for Tootgarook like many players would be if they got cut from a list.

In my opinion there is no way he will be at geelong next year. Footy is just not a high enough priority for Kent which is patently obvious when you observe the lack of intensity and resolve that he shows. He has been a patheticly unreliable kick for goal for years now and has not been able to rectify the problem. You cannot rely on him in a big game. He has to go and if the tigers are interested then we should take a 2nd or 3rd round pick for him

I didn't even mention Nathan Ablett but you are right that the jury is out regarding his passion for footy also. The difference is that Ablett is a kid, whereas Kingsley is a seasoned player who should know better and was considered earlier in the year to be a leader of the club.
As far as calling me a "moron", slagging off at me like that is like water off a ducks back - if the truth hurts about little Kent I suggest you follow him to his next club.....

Once again everyone, he has struggled this year and he isn't a champion. But for numerous years he has been played out of position and carried our forward line.

Kingsley is just not up to AFL standards. There are millions of football players in Australia, and there are key forwards on every team. There are definately some out there who could do a better job than Kingsley. Why should we tolerate a below par player. Get rid of him and get a better player. It's not cricket gentlemen.

Bomber said Kingsley has shown he can play by kicking 50 goals. Lyon said he had been much maligned this year and Bomber said he probably deserved that. Talked briefly about KK being dropped from the leadership group. He said many think KK could walk away from footy pretty easily but thought he does enjoy playing. Basically summed up KK future is in his own hands.
