Been reported on SEN that Cap'n Ritchie is out with a virus and Ries is in.

I hate Ries but he is the obvious replacement. I guess Vanders would of done a tagging role on Goodwin or Edwards any way, so I guess that will be Ries role now.

Atleast we see another audition for Mitchell as captain next season.

And, for a moment, I was excited by developments...

and Ries is in.

And, just as suddenly, I was not.

^ I dont think he would be able to run with Edwards, plus with him missing a week at Box Hill through suspension I guess Clarkson didnt wanna call him up.

I hope to see Mcglynn and Kane get more of a run over the next couple weeks to see if they will be staying on the Rookie list.

Vandenberg to miss
Friday 14 July 2006

Hawthorn has been dealt a major blow ahead of its clash against ladder leaders Adelaide on Saturday at AAMI stadium, with the news club captain and crucial midfielder Richie Vandenberg will miss the game due to a virus.

Shaping as an already difficult game, the news further dampened coach Alastair Clarkson's mood, who hadn't decided how to combat the premiership favourites.

"We don't think Vanders will be able to play," Clarkson said ahead of the team's flight to Adelaide on Friday.

"He's come down with a bit of a virus so he'll miss this week but hopefully he'll be right for next week."

Nick Ries shapes as the most likely to replace the Hawks skipper but with Ben Kane also in the mix, it's a case of wait and see.

"We'll work it out over the next couple of days. We're going to take Nick Ries and Ben Kane, both our emergencies over with us and we'll work out the conditions and see which one will be better suited to tomorrow," Clarkson said.

Clarkson knows Saturday's game is going to be tough assignment, and with the Crows in ominous form of late, he wouldn't expect it any differently.

"Whatever happens, it's going to be a tough ask tomorrow.

"Nearly every side in the competition has found Adelaide tough and for the best part of two years.

"It's a tough assignment, particularly on their home track but we'll go over there and play to the best of our ability and hopefully it's competitive enough to make it a good game," he said.

When asked if he'd take them on or approach it much like Richmond did in round eight, by slowing down the game and frustrating the Crows, it was an uncertain Clarkson who had yet to decide on his plan of attack.

"Who knows? We'll work out a strategy but not too many strategies have worked.

"We're not really too favourable with our young group to flood and use those sort of tactics. I think it'd be unlikely that we'd use something like that.

"We're going to have to come up with some different strategies to try and negate the flow of the Adelaide side and it's just a matter of whether we're capable of doing that for four quarters," Clarkson said.

After pushing the West Coast Eagles all the way last Saturday in a game they lost by 10 points, Clarkson didn't want to commend his players for a noble effort, citing they don't win matches.

Realising the enormity of the task, Clarkson said the more important matter at hand is being able to follow on from the week before.

"The big challenge for us is to back it up.

"There's no bigger challenge really to try and back up a competitive effort like that with a run against the premiership favourite on their home track.

"We know that if our attitude and application are somewhere around the mark then we'll put in a competitive performance.

"We also know that if you're not up to scratch in that area, then Adelaide more so than other team in the competition will pull you apart very quickly," he said."

Hmm, interesting, Nick Ries is only the most likely but Ben Kane still a possible.

agreed, Kane can take an overhead grab and kick the thing 55m - what we need against the robots.
