Herald Sun:

Tigers Wayde into troubled waters

17 July 2006 Herald-Sun
Geoff Poulter

THE Western Bulldogs' injury curse at AFL level has extended to its VFL affiliate Werribee.

But so has the Dogs' grit and ability to win against the odds.

Werribee yesterday lost big man Wayde Skipper (foot) and gun midfielder James Allen (broken arm) before surging from behind to overwhelm Frankston by 15 points at Frankston.

The Tigers have recovered from a slow start to win six of their past seven games.

While the Northern Bullants and Sandringham have moved clear of the field, Werribee is now only a game behind Coburg, Williamstown and Geelong after 14 rounds.

Werribee coach Simon Atkins was buoyed by the result but worried by the increasing injury toll.

``It was a real gutsy win. We were 15 points down at the 15-minute mark of the last quarter,'' Atkins said.

``We got struck with injuries again today. Wayde Skipper injured his foot, I don't know how serious it is.

``We lost one of our really good players James Allen today, who averages 30 touches, with a broken arm. He would be right up there in our best-and-fairest.

``It is getting hard for us. With our reserves today I think we only had one left.''

Later Atkins said Skipper had suffered a burst blood vessel in his foot, but scans showed it was not a serious injury and he should be right for next week.

Werribee's star performer yesterday against the Dolphins was Cameron Wight. The 200cm ruckman is yet to play a senior game for the Bulldogs this year after being drafted in 2002.

``That was probably the best game he has played,'' Atkins said.

``When Skipper went down he went into the ruck and was very competitive. He had nine tackles which is something we have been building with him _ the Bulldogs and us _ to get him more competitive, and he really helped us win the game today.''

Another standout was Brad Murphy, who finished with four goals.

Frankston spearhead Aaron Edwards kicked eight of the Dolphins' 14 goals to hit the top of the goalkicking table with 51.

And The Age:

Werribee again showed it is the Harry Houdini of the VFL, after miraculously conjuring four goals in the dying minutes to edge out Frankston by 15 points.

With no fit players on the interchange, the Tigers showed amazing resilience to power home and break the Dolphins' spirit.

The Werribee bench resembled a hospital, with Wayde Skipper (foot), Cameron Purss and Jim Allen (suspected broken arm) all unable to continue due to injury.

Cameron Faulkner was also unable to see the game out, due to his lack of match fitness after returning from injury.

However, in some welcome news for Western Bulldogs supporters, Skipper's foot injury should not cause him to miss any matches.

"To be down that far down in Frankston, knowing that we had no one on the bench to come on, it was a really gutsy win," Werribee coach Simon Atkins said.

"To lose Jimmy Allen was especially bad; he's one of our major ball-winners and has been averaging around 30 touches through the midfield. Hopefully it's not too bad, but it appears to be a broken arm."

Bulldog Kieran McGuinness played yet another solid game, and looms as the likely AFL replacement for Brett Montgomery, who injured his calf in yesterday's win over Carlton.

Could B. Murphy come back from the dead and take Gia's place. If he could pinch a goal or two would have done his job.

Thinking back to players to have a few games before being axed (or saved), i.e. Josh Mahoney.

Is it worth giving Brad Murphy one last go?

Either he plays well and hangs on/turns from delister to something of trade value or he finally shows he is no good.

He played well on the weekend. To me K-Mac is gone, and i say that because he's had a few AFL opp's and hasn't taken them. Murhpy on the other hand has not been given them.

With a stand-out performance, perhaps it's worth one last chance. Good motivation to show how good he is i'd argue.

B-Murphy has played a couple of decent games so is a chance - Wight has the endeavour but still seems a little light for AFL, although running free as a forward he could be a show.

Shame Baird wasn't in the best - he could've been a chance to debut.

They may well chuck in Birss or Faulkner to relieve Eagleton, Boyd or Griffen - or even somebody else - because those 3 in particular haven't done a lot lately and have looked fairly tired in their efforts. Somebody like Faulkner could perhaps releive Boyd or Eagleton, which would be great.

Wight's a chance after being B.O.G and kicking 3 goals.

Baird could be a good replacement for Monty. Good hands, plays forward like Monty has been.

Skipper & Addison might get a look in too, but I think It'd have to be out of Faulkner, Birss, Wight & Baird.

A straight swap, D-Mac for Addison, could be on the cards. Bit of extra injection of pace wouldn't hurt us atm.

Cam Faulkner is my Adopt a Dog this year and hasn't given me anything to write about. What does concern me is the report in The Age yesterday that said "Cameron Faulkner was also unable to see the game out, due to his lack of match fitness after returning from injury".

If he can't see out a VFL game is he going to struggle in a high pressure, fast paced AFL game at the Dome. Would have to be used sparingly.

I think it's a "Monty" that they'll want to have a look at Baird.

cam hasn't played footy since the tassie game where he got a knock on the shoulder. He's got to try and stake his claim to a senior spot in the next couple of weeks or time might be running out for him.
It would be very dissapointing for the dogs if this happens, i think he has so much potential, the bad luck he's had with injuries hasn't helped him either.

Why would time be running out for him?

I'd doubt he would be in the gun for delisting and his trade value would be nothing seeing he's been injured all year.

Faulkner is a hard hitter so it'd be good to have him in the team, perhaps taking up where Hahn left off... but as said previously, he'd need to show something in the Bees first.

He did, he played for Werribee reserves the weekend prior to the Frankston game!
