Do you have a favourite cartoonist, be it a political (ie newspaper) cartoonist or just a general, comic type cartoonist?
Personally, I am a fan of Bill Leak, who works for The Australian newspaper. Whilst he is obviously a leftie, he doesn't mind ripping into all sides of politics. His recent cartoons on the refugee issue have absolutely lacerated Howard and Ruddock. The one where he depicted Ruddock as this crazed Frankenstein type character, complete with bolts on his neck was brilliant - said it all.
As for "other" cartoonists I have been a big fan of Gary Larson for years. Very droll and witty. One of my favourites was called "The REAL reason dinosaurs became extinct"; it showed a group of dinosaurs lounging around the trees having a smoke. Not laugh out loud funny, but always good for a chuckle.
What about you guys?

Yep, good call on Leunig london dave, brilliant cartoonist (more of a bone fide artist than a cartoonist really).

Larson is a genius. My fave was an Elephant in a pub with drinks all around him saying "Its no use, I drink and I drink and I still cant forget".
Loved the old Reg Smtyhe's 'Andy Capp'. Ive got some collected editions of the early stuff and its very very dry humour indeed.
Eric Jolliffe's 'Saltbush Bill' and 'Witchettys tribe' were very underated Aussie classics imo.
I can't decide between Larson & Leunig, both funny dudes, love the Larson cartoon of a frog lying on a bed with only one leg & a shotgun in his hand, a chef walks in & the frog says I knew you would be back for the other leg. :D
Used to love seeing the Larson cartoons in the paper, alas they don't appear anymore. Got a calendar and a few cartoon books of his work.
These days, the only ones I really look at are Robotman, Snake Tales, Ernie and Garfield.
Not a big fan of political/topical cartoonists (one glance, then forgotten) or of comic books in general, although I have about 200-300 from when I was a kid.

Gary Larson (The Far Side) and Charles Schulz (Peanuts) are my faves. And Walt Disney - as my current avatar gives away.
For political cartoons Moir in the Sydney Morning Herald is often good for a laugh.

Leunig is a western suburbs boy and a bulldog supporter, so you have to love him. Bill Leak is a wonderful cartoonist who doesnt mind getting into both sides of politics.
Bill Watterson, the guy who does 'Calvin and Hobbes' is my all time favourite cartoonist/cartoon strip.
I also love 'Viz comic'-the UK one not the Japanese one.

Gary Larson (The Far Side), Non-Sequitor by a guy called Wiley in the Age, he has such a bizarre view of life, Jim Davis (Garfield) and the dearly departed Murray Ball (Footrot Flats)

Fluck & Law, or Luck & Flaw, the inspiration behind Spitting Image. Undoubtedly the most complex in terms of drawing was the political satirist Gerald Scarfe, who made Maggie Thatcher look like an Alien.

Personally I always liked Footrot Flats but as a newspaper cartoonist, I always liked Dean Alston from the West Australian, some of his cartoons are very satirist and funny.

Yes, Alston was pretty good. There was another guy on the West called Mariusz (I think) he was also pretty good.
Langoulant from the old Daily News was also pretty good in his time, I remember a cartoon he did when the Australian cricket team had about 8 West Aussies in the side. Viv Richards, or whoever turns to a teammate and says something like "just be grateful mon that the other 3 aren't from WA".

Leunig, he is too smart for his own good. If life is that bad he should top himself.

Another one I just remembered was Patrick Cook, a cartoonist who also dabbled in satirical writing (appearred in the Gillies Report amongst other things).
He did this classic cartoon on the Sydney architect Harry Sadleir. Sadleir is renowned for his functional, if somewhat soulless designs. Cook did a cartoon called 'Harry Sadleir retirement village' which showed a group of old people entombed, standing up, in brick chimney like structures. At the top near the mouths was a slot with a worker shovelling in the food while at the rear end was another slot with another worker disposing of the waste.
Brilliant stuff, Sadleir naturally took him to court for defamation, thankfully he lost.

Don't know the name of the cartoonist but Insanity Streak keeps cracking me up.......so many things relate to events in real life.....
Sols Snake tales has always been a favourite and in our NT News the editorial cartoonist Wicking is an absolute legend with his local perspective of things.......:D
