Giles eyes Ashes after surgery
July 17th
London - England spinner Ashley Giles has set his sights on the Ashes later this year after undergoing a second bout of hip surgery.
The 33-year-old was forced to return home from the winter 2005 tour of Pakistan and did not feature in either the tour of India this year or the recent home series with Sri Lanka.
But now he is determined to reclaim his place in time to face the Australians later this year.
"We'll find out more in a week's time when I come off the crutches, but the early indications are that they've taken away the things that were causing the discomfort," Giles told the Daily Telegraph.
"I want to play cricket for a long time and I hope that I might be able to continue for another five or six years.
"The Ashes are my goal, partly because they're a target to keep me going and partly because I believe that I can get myself fit and bowling again before then."

Why even bother with him?

Monty is 10 times the bowler

Australia's odds just shortened if Giles might be a chance of playing....

If Giles gets back in at Panesar's expense, all England's progress as a cricketing nation suddenly goes down the toilet.

Strangely I think he may still be in contention due to his batting, which may not be up the standard of Warne or Lee, but it's better than Monty's. I'm just playing devil's advocate here - but I agree with you, if Monty doesn't retain his spot it'll be a joke - he still has a better bowling average than Giles at this early stage of his career :o

A bowler's in the team for his bowling, Monty can bowl, Giles can't bowl, it seems pretty simple

We can only hope.Don't think it'll make much difference one way or the other .

Exactly, but the English selectors don't take that view - they have cited Giles batting as a reason he is favoured.
