Being Heritage Round, and an 80's theme, I think it would be an idea to put forward ideas for our team of the 1980's. To jog the memory, I'll put forward a few names for you to consider once I add up all the games played by Bulldog players in that decade.

OK, let me lead off. All I'm assuming is that someone must have played at least one top season in the 80s to qualify and you might want to make the quaiifications tighter. I'm haven't thought too hard about this so I might leave out someone obvious. I'm naming four on interchange.

B. Hardie, Kennedy, N. Cordy
HB. B.Cordy, Foster, Dunstan
C. Hawkins, Wallis, McLean
HF. Edmond, Templeton, S. Macpherson
F. Sewell, Beasley, Bamblett
R. Purser, McGuiness, Royal
I/change: Hampshire, Ford, Egan, Petraglia

I'm sure there's at least two or three controversial picks in there although, for me, well over half the team picks itself.

144 players played 1 senior game for us in the 80's. I would think it would be reasonable to only pick players who played more than 20 games, which would eliminate 87 possibilities. If you want me to put up the eligible list then I will.

Blue - moved position
Red - in

In: Eppelstun (Human Glove of the '80s), Wallace (2 B&Fs in the '80s), Loveless (who can forget those one-handed marks in the goal square?), Wheeler (the original Squirrel Grip)
Out: N.Cordy, Petraglia, Egan, Hampshire

i was watching fox footy this morning,

it was footscray vs carlton
1986 at vfl park.

We got pantsed.

We were sitting 5th on the ladder on 44 points, big game and we were getting done by 90 points at 3/4 time before easing it back to 70.

Interesting. I was forgetting how early Wallace joined us. The only strong point of disagreeement I'd have is Loveless where I'd much prefer Hampshire. Apart from 1980, Templeton didn't play much good footy for us, but he'd certainly slip in with a 20 game qualification. I think Neil Cordy and Eppelstun are close and I think I'd prefer Wheeler to Egan if he played enough games in the 80s to qualify. The goal to goal line is very strong. The hard exercise would be to pick a competi
tive second best 80s goal to goal line. Ouch!

Fair point. I think once Hardie joined the Dogs, Micky Egan's time was up at the Dogs. It was a shame because he was our best player with Templeton in the very early '80s. I don't think you can have Hardie and Egan in the same team, so Wheeler is just a little bit more versatile.

As for Shane Loveless, I think I'm just a romantic for those windy, rainy days at the Western Oval when he seemed to grab these one-handers from nowhere. Also, Purser never really rested off the ball so I don't think we need another ruckman on the bench.

Megan had two bad knees before Hardie joined and was virually finished. He had two recos on one knee and the other one was ruined from the extra strain.

Shane Loveless easily in that side, yes he had a problem with consistency but on his day he was unstoppable, even the best FB's in the league at the time couldn't hold him when he was on a roll (if he got a couple of goals in the first quarter that was it, he was in for a big one). Took Bruce Doull apart one day at the Western Oval and laid him out just to add to his troubles (and stole his headband). As i can remember Loveless was also a country cricket and boxing champ. Match him against Hall or Gerig and I doubt either would be standing afterwards. Think he went back to the country league put on weight to Cookie dimensions and still kicked over 100 goals a season.

Mmmmm, quite an interesting team you have put together there Spiritof82 :D , definitely all a force to be reckoned with in that lot. I remember thinking at the time S Nichol had potential.

I remember the SAFL stating that they were thinking of boycott the state of origin series because the doggies had taken Mark Noble, one of the young players with the best potential in their league at the time. And what class he showed in the one reserves game at the Western Oval before disappearing as quickly as he arrived.
