After having not listened to much extremely heavy stuff for a few years, I picked up Enslaved's "Frost" album the other day for $10 at one of JB's sales. Absolutely brilliant. It's had me listening to a bit more death and black metal in the last few days, especially the extreme Scandinavian stuff that began to saturate the metal scene around 1993-94.

Other bands I've had on high levels of repeat lately are Burzum, Carcass and Emperor, but this Enslaved album really is something else!

Thoughts, anyone?

Sodom were/are the kings of black/speed metal. I'm not really into this stuff where the vocalist sounds like he's gargling draino.

I personally dont like the vocals of the deathy bands but have heard lots and lots of it.

but have you heard Opeth - fantastic music and on the few occasions the guy sings you realise how special this band can be.

for black metal I really like King Diamond and Merciful Fate!

And although the vocals are full on Venom - Black Metal is a classic!

Not exactly...

Today's CD diet included Iron Maiden (traditional metal), Blind Guardian (power metal), Electric Wizard, Orange Goblin (both stoner rock), and only later did we have a brief taste of Carcass's "Heart Work".

Speaking of Carcass, does anyone have their last CD "Swansong"? If so, how does it compare in style and quality of songs, to the other albums? It's the only one I don't have.

Darky - you da man! ;)

Swansong was ok - a lot more 'rock' (if you can believe that!), but still kinda heavy. Knowing your tastes, you'd probably dig it.
some of it even reminds me of early megadeth.:p

Heartwork is undoubtedly one of my top ten all time albums. Necroticism and Symphonies of Sickness are also awesome (if a bit more grindy)

Enslaved aren't bad - I'm pretty picky with the BM stuff actually. There's only a few bands I really like which include:

* Emperor (of course! 'Anthems' is insane)

* COF (trendy I know, but I have actually been listening to them since 'Principle'. The last couple of albums are pretty weak IMO.
I suggest 'Cruelty and the Beast' or 'Vempire' for novices!

* Dimmu Borgir - pretty trendy now though (best song = 'Master of Disharmony')

* Mayhem (Grand Declaration of War) have some really interesting stuff. I prefer the newer thing to the 'old school BM' that they really pioneered

* Satryicon are interesting (and 'true' if you go for that sort of stuff)

* Marduk absolutely slay (Panzer Division Marduk!!!), but are pretty one-dimensional

* Immortal aren't bad either

Can't think of othe BM stuff I like of the top of my head - I was never a huge rap for the 'grim' production (ie. sounds like dirt) that bands like Darkthrone went for.

Some other 'Scandinavian' DM bands from early-mid 90's you should check out include;

AT THE GATES - 'Slaughter of the Soul' (AWESOME - can't recommend it enough!)

ENTOMBED - 'Clandestine' (ie. before they became garbage!)

DISMEMBER - 'Indecent & Obscene'

That should get you started!

I agree, it's not quite as good as the stuff where the vocalist sounds like he's gargling razor blades.;)

Darkthrone LOL - I have two of their albums from a few years ago. The whole sound & production is rough as guts... but in a way that adds to the eerieness of the whole black metal genre.

One of the Burzum CDs has a really weird keyboard instrumental... on the surface it sounds very innocuous... a simple repetition of a few notes played fairly slowly.. but spookily, it's almost hypnotic. Very weird stuff.

Mayhem were also great early on, until the wacko from Burzum decided to kill the wacko from Mayhem in some bitter internal wrangling in the Norwegian black metal mafia. 21 years in the slammer. LOL

I certainly don't take these clowns seriously as far as lifestyles etc go, but there's some good music to be found if you look for it.

Entombed were also pretty good, I think half the band are now members of Hellacopters.. anyone with more info? Hellacopters are also OK, very good ballsy punk-like rock'n'roll.

The wacko from Burzum was actually in Mayhem at the time it all went down (playing bass).

Yup - my thoughts exactly.

Nicke (the guitarist/singer) used to play in Entombed (when they were good). He's the only one.

Hellacopters are fantastic at what they do! Superb!

Have to agree that Carcass Heart Work is a gem too! vocals are annoying somewhat but you get used to it - the riffage is very good.

Wonder wot Eric Adams would say? lol

Heartwork sounds like where the idea for Arch Enemy (Mike Amott's current band) started. I don't know if it is actually an Amott-initiated band, but the style is a lot more similar to the riffs on Heartwork than on Carcass's previous albums.

As for what Joey DeMaio would say... "You better strap your nuts to your leg, or they're going to get blown off!"

New Manowar single out April 15, new album May 27.

DEATH TO FALSE METAL!!!

Arch Enemy started when a record label (I think it was MFN) offered Mike Amott a big chunk o' change to write another 'death metal' album (like Heartwork era Carcass). He dragged his little brother in who was beginnning to get his act together, and various other band ****s to record.

Thus Black Earth sounds a lot 'rougher' than the latest Arch Enemy stuff.

It's definitely Mike's baby.

Did you see Carcass when they came out? It was not long after Mike left (:( ), and they had this annoying Yank playing for him. Bill Steer was still a legend though! ;)

Hot Rockin, You Say Yes I say No, Grinder, Island of Domination, Ram it down, Turbo Lover, etc etc

sigh! Puts such a slant on so much of the old Priest songs.

np. battle hymns - manowar

The video for Priest's "Hot Rockin'" was a bit of a give away LOL, plus Aunty Rob prancing about on the first full-length live video (shot in Memphis 1982).

Apparently Judas Priest are suing the makers of the film "Rock Star" because they think it is a direct satire of their experiences. Obviously it wasn't too authentic, as it didn't have John Inman (Are You Being Served?) playing Aunty Rob! :D
