On SEN 1116 they just metioned that Sheedy has said that Lloyd could return this year for Hird's farewell game.

Has anyone heard anything like this? It almost sounds like Sheeds wants Hird to retire.

i thinks it's more along the lines that Lloyd has said that if hird was to retire, he'd like to play one last game with the great man.

having said that, if hird is going to retire, i hope he announces it before season end so that the fans can all pay tribute.

Yeah it was on the news lastnight..
Intresting, but I dont think Hird would retire on such a sour note (Essendon's season this year),I think he would much rather leave when the team is doing well...Prob sounds stupid to you guys. ;)

I agree though,
I think 2007 will be his last year..

It was meant as we don't wanna lose hird at any cost, not as a sack sheedy:D

100% agree. I'd love Hird to be sent off properly. We don't have testimonial matches like in soccer to say any other sort of proper goodbye.

Lloyd would be crazy though to risk his comeback, even if it's a small risk, just for that. I'd rather Sheeds let him coach the match then let him play in it.

It would be gold if the bombers got up and won the flag for jimmy's last year, then sheeds stayed on for a few more years until hirdy id ready to be senior coach.

i Know a lot of people are saying hird shouldnt retire when essendon are doing badly but lets be realistic it may take us more than a year to get out of this rut, and lets face it the very best case scenario is hird has one more year left. I actually feel sorry for hirdy a lot of the time because thinking about the amount of times he would have to do rehab, cope with the frustation of injuries etc.

As for hird himself saying he doesnt want to leave the club like this, hird owes the efc nothing in terms of staying around next year. i know i want think any less of him if he retires. hes done everything for us if he wants and only is going to play to help us get out if this position than he should retire this year.

i just hope hird doesnt play on cause he feels guilty about essendons current state and struggle through another increasingly frustating year next year purely because he feels inclined to help the club.

Hird's mind doesn't want to retire, his body is struggling big time. He still wants to play, he is questioning whether or not he could get through, say two-thirds of the season fit and adding value to the team.

Hird says he doesn't want to leave the club like this because he knows he can make a difference when fit. It's not that he wants to retire, and feels he shouldn't because of our current position. He just doesn't want to be a dead weight, sitting on the injury list the whole time, which is how he'd be feeling right now

We all know Hird doesn't owe the club anything at all he is a deadset legend, but if he was fit next year, as i said even for at least two-thirds of the season, he could be vital in a climb up the ladder and a great influence for our young guys now, and the new talent we pick up in the draft.

I would like to see James retire this year. I dont think he can get anything else out of his body and he has nothing left to prove. I would like to see bomber fans celebrate his last game the way we celebrated Harvs last game at Optus Oval in 1997. Next year I would like to see our first round draft pick given the honour of wearing the special no 5 guernsey.
Gumbleton, Gibbs or Hansen in a no 5 sounds pretty good to me.

Sheeds only said that Hird has to tell the club IF he is going to retire. Sheeds never said he wanted Hird to retire.

From the Australian:

He also said former skipper Hird had still not made a decision whether he would play on next season.

While Lloyd, who has received medical advice that he could return from a severe hamstring injury in Round 21, wants to play one game with Hird if he decides to retire this season, Sheedy said it might not be wise to risk the skipper.

I would hate to see Lloyd risk it for a last game with Hird. I think all Bomber fans would be to busy worrying about that hamstring to enjoy the great occasion.

I personally think that Hird's body is telling him it can't cope but I would love him to play on in a managed role next year (have some games off even if at full fitness).

You have to read between the lines whenever sheeds speaks. I believe it's his way of simply saying, "come on hirdy, let us know if you're staying or going so we can plan for the draft".
Sheedy's way of doing that is going down the sentimentle path and seeing if hirdy bites.
I doubt Lloyd would play whatever decision Hird makes.

Lloyd basically said last night it was all a load of crap.

He won't be playing this year and Jim hasn't made a decision.
