I just red an interesting article on the afl website titled " Is Paul Kelly Fit To Be Skipper "in which the basic underlying fact of the article is that if Paul was not fit, he would not captain the Swans in 2002. I dont believe this will be the case, however Paul is not going to be around forever (as much as we would like him to be)
and anyway the article got me thinking on who would be the next candidate in line to captain the swans in to the future (the time is near to name that person), i think this will be an excellent and relevant discussion topic for the swans supporters so i put it to the swans followers out there : - who do you think will be the best candidate to captain the swans into the future ? i would be very interested to hear everyones replies and thoughts on the matter.
A few names were mentioned in the article such as Schwass and Matthews as future captains, while i think schwass would be a great leader, personally i would want a captain to be named that would be around for at least 5-6 years, not schwass who will be retiring in the next year or so, also i am a big admirer of matthews, but i think he might be a bit young for the job at the moment, i think someone in the mid 20's bracket would be best, my selctions would be Nicks or Seymour an maybe a younger player as vice like bolton or along those lines.
Anyway it is an interesting discussion point so everyone tell me your thoughts as i would be keen to hear everyones viewpoints.

Cheers

I feel the club should do what they did in 93 when first appointing Kelly as skipper.

That is, take a comparatively raw youngster with a great competitive attitude and give him the job with a view to himhaving it for the next 10 years or so.

Matthews, Saddington and Bolton are names often chucked around in these discussions. I would think they are all outstanding candidates.

Two more I wpuld like to nominate as well :

Michael O'Loughlin - now a senior player and top performer. Very devoted to the club, he also actually wants the job.

Jared Crouch - small, highly disciplined, tenacious, brave and tough. Very much the 'in and under' type player who woulod lead by example - thats the way we like our captains at The Swans.

of the others :

Cresswell, Maxfield, Schwass - too old

Nicks - not the greatest example to follow for youngsters, especially off-field ;)

Goodes - not yet, but shows great potential.

Seymour - too thuggy

Schauble - this is a wind-up right ?

cheers

Brad Seymour for mine. He is a real on-field leader whose presence is really missed when he is not there.

Agree that Maxfield and Schwass are too old.

Of the youngsters, I like Ben Matthews. If he was to get it I would prefer them to wait one more season though.
