View Full Version : Did Harvey come to take CC's job?
I have been thinking about this quite a bit lately and I have come to the conclusion that Mark Harvey only came to Freo because he was assured Connolly's job at seasons end. Think about it, he could have gone to any club in Victoria as an assistant because he has worked with the best in the business. Everyone knows he wants to be a senior coach so why come all the way to Perth just to be another assistant? It doesn't make sense and personally I would love to see him coach Freo next year. Thoughts?

Because he was offered a job as Senior Assitant and is (apparently) getting paid about $100K a year more than the average Assistant Coach. Then add in the weather etc.

Plus there was a fairly good chance he was going to get that job, especially 6 rounds ago.
I doubt he was guarenteed it though.

Well, there has been a change in the way the Dockers have been going about it on the field the last five weeks.
he may not have the job, but we might be seeing his impact well.

Whatever the reason, I see it as a good career move by Harvey. An opportunity at an interstate club, away from Melbourne, a chance to get a grip on how these clubs operate, travel etc. He doesn't necessarily need to get our top job for it to be a succesful move for him, and he's not after it. It's a great experience for a guy who's getting close to a top job somewhere, and anyone who thinks he had ulterior motives for taking the job is showing nothing but disrespect for the club, Connolly and Harvey himself.
Some people read too much into too little and proceed to crap on about the most ridiculous things. Fair dinkum, whoever thinks the worst about Harvey's intentions, get a life.

A very good point. Harv's has said a number of times that it has been a real eye opener how the other half live.
It would have been a disaster if he had taken over at the start of the season.

Whether we have a good year or not in 2006 Harvey knew that moving across would help his chances of securing a senior coaching role. Harvey knew like the rest of us that if we miss the finals Schwab wouldn't be able to protect Connolly anymore, leaving him in the box seat. He would have also known that if we toughen up and win a final this year a lot of the credit will be given to him, improving his chances of securing a senior coaching position. Win win situation.
To say it would have been a disaster if he had taken over at the start of the season is pure speculation. We could have gone backwards, we could have played like we have in the last month for the whole season.

Loved this bit.
"Shaw said he was amazed by how well the players had coped with the travel burden. At his old club, Essendon, people would fret over more than four trips a year and more than one to Perth."
