View Full Version : Positive Newspaper Articles About BigFooty!

In light of recent discussions and just for fun, I thought I might try my hand at writing (the first lines of) a newspaper article that reflects positively on the contributions of BigFooty (and other internet forums) to the football world.

It turned out to be easy! ;)

How about these (NB apologies for not always referencing individual posters more precisely, I’m just knocking this out quickly without time to full read/reference all threads)

Crows Fans Defend McDermott and Umpires

Those present at AAMI Stadium on Saturday night, or listening to 5AA after the game, could be forgiven for thinking that Crows supporters have an irrational hatred of AFL umpires.

But when BigFooty poster “Arrowman” criticised Chris McDermott for saying the umpiring on Saturday night was “OK”, saying that McDermott had “NFI”, some of his fellow supporters were quick to side with McDermott on this subject and agree that the umpiring was not as poor as Arrowman (and some other supporters) believed . . .

Crows Supporters Realistic About Finals Prospects

If there has been a common theme among Crows supporters on BigFooty lately, it is that while they remain confident about their Club’s Premiership prospects in 2006, they are well aware of the threat posed by the other contenders and they are not blindly claiming that “the Flag’s in the bag”.

Informed and reasoned discussion has ranged over a number of topics related to the Crows’ recent apparent slump in form . . .

. . . Supporters of other clubs (and journalists) looking for evidence of a club that “can’t handle the truth” would be surprised to find comments such as this from “RogerRabbit69” who remarked (in reference to a Gold Membership providing access to a guaranteed Grand Final ticket: “It’s not worth anything yet.”

BigFooty Posters Sanguine About Roo Suspension

Less-informed supporters of other clubs might be expected to be ropable about the suspension of their captain just weeks before the finals (or, in the case of one club, positively eager to see their captain sidelined as a liability to the team), but Crows supporters seem to be able to see the bigger picture.

Discussion on BigFooty has centred not on “how much of a loss to the team [is Ricciuto]” but on the fact that the enforced layoff will probably be good for their champion captain. This in turn has led to knowledgeable supporters debating the merits of the various possible replacements - and it must be noted that all of the options are good for Adelaide’s Number One Club. . .

Crows Fans Looking To The Future

If they were tired old hacks, the Crows supporter community on BigFooty might be hard pressed to look beyond a possible appearance in the 2006 Grand Final. But tired, and hacks, they are not - which is why last week the BigFooty regulars began a discussion on the value of the draft.

The thread began with an outstanding post from “Crow-mo”, who presented an analysis of the 2001 draft (first 20 picks) worthy of publication in any newspaper. . .

Well done:thumbsu: I was going to post something along the same lines yesterday but couldnt seem to find the right words for what I wanted to say. But I will add that without sounding bias I think the Crows supporters are the most intelligent, well balanced, informed, polite and humble lot of BF.
And if anyone thinks otherwise we'll just rip their bl@@dy head off!!!

I'm positive that there'll be newspaper articles about bigfooty tomorrow-but they'll be linked to the Geelong supporters rather than the Crows' ones.

As much as I'm happy for Rooch to give us free publicity with regular mentions in his roast, it would be good if he could utilise some our thought prevoking threads (both positive & negative) into his articles. So there is the challenge Rooch, as we know you are reading this. ;)

BigFooty posters forgive a tearful Rucci

Close to a nervous breakdown, Michelangelo Rucci sobbed and wept uncontrollably on his hands and knees as he finally admitted that the success of the Crows had finally crushed his spirit, realising that his beloved Power would never reach the heights of their bitter rivals in all facets of the game. Crows fans on the internet board, however, took pity on the pathetic man and consoled him with words such as 'history' and 'tradition'.

In all seriousness though - one thing I would never do is underestimate anyone else's profession, or the amount of work that goes (should go) into writing for a newspaper, especially when you're working against tight deadlines. e.g. care to try writing a quality match report in 30 minutes on Saturday night so it can go in to Sunday's paper?

Still and all, if it was a full-time gig ....

Van Berlo's Growing Cult Status

Nathan Van Berlo, the youngster from Perth is growing in popularity among the BigFooty fraternity. Since his debut, he has proved himself to be a determined and fearless character, getting into the contests with no regard to his well being.

The posters on BigFooty have noticed this and have started talking up Van Berlo's "superhuman strength" in a topic, which started out as a troll ( a thread designed at getting other posters angry) and turned into the greatest thread BigFooty has seen. It is now around the 800 page mark, and each page has 15 replies on it! Some have mentioned his ability to perform surgery on himself, others, that he can run so fast, if he ran around the world he could punch himself in the back of the head, his ability to shoot fire from his eyes and many other so called attributes

Dandy_Go, one of the funniest posters on BigFooty, had this to say: "Van Berlo is a an absolute champ, anyone that has talked down about the great man, has had some sort of poor luck go their way. Coincidence? I think not"

While Vic Crow stated: "I will be going to the game at the MCG in round 20, and have made a special Van Berlo banner, hopefully he will see it, and spare us any in any sacrifices"

The final piece to this is the "New Religion" topic, where many posters have actually put "Van Berloism" down as their religion on their census form, one of the posters, Mad Dog said to me "If we didn't do this, how would the great man react? the consequences were too harsh to even think about, and i put down Van Berloism for my whole family in a milli second!

So now, as Van Berlo weaves his magic on the footy field, the posters at BigFooty, will continue to laugh and contribute to the humour of the thread, while others who "pay out" Van Berlo will continue to live a life of fear....

Intriguing it is that Arrowman and <name suppressed> have never been seen in the same room together.

Most revealing is the fact that the first sentence of this post is in fact a lie.

Today's Editorial 11/8/06 by Melvin Mansell:

In a game that is often referred to by the faithful as 'more than a game', it is refreshing to note that there is whole new source of information and vitality surfacing, from an unexpected source called simply "Bigfooty".

This innocuous looking website with its' yellow banners and increasingly inappropriate banner advertisements, is a veritable treasure chest of useful information to the football follower both religious and casual. So impressed are we at The Advertiser, that we have taken the unprecedented step of removing all football content from our newspaper and will now provide no more than a link to "Bigfooty".

Our beloved leader Rupert Murdoch, has asked us to find ways of cutting costs without affecting quality and quite frankly, this method covers all the bases. We can now remove our Chief Football Writer and allow him to indulge his outside interests of pottery, crochet and macrame. We can also let Geoff Roach concentrate on sports that he actually has a clue about. When we first tabled this proposal, we expected outrage on the Wapping scale from the Unions, however, we were pleasantly surprised to get nothing, but support. Bob Scott the erstwhile author of the 'Jounalistic Code of Ethics', conceded that in fact he did not regard Rucci, Roach, Capel or Robertson as journalists at all and he believed that Jerry Springer's show actually had more credibility than any article penned by these novice Mike Cowards.

You will get to know these new contributors well, it's just a matter of sorting out the trolls from the trojans and ensuring that you don't post anything derogatory about Nathan Van Berlo.

We trust that you will enjoy this new direction for the Adelaide Advertiser and that "Bigfooty" will provide you with a dose of reality, a pile of bull...t and other pieces somewhere in the middle of the two. But most of all you will be entertained, informed and up to date, something we have never been able to do for you previously.....:thumbsu:
