View Full Version : Let's discuss JA

Murray
13 Aug 2006, 13:55
Okay, I appreciate his dad posts on here.
But I would like a serious honest discussion on the potential of this kid.

I have seen him only 4 times this year, but I have noticed the following
* Is lightly framed (will need 2 more solid pre-seasons)
* Is a thumping kick (60 meters is easy for him)
* Is a good tackler
* Is generally good under pressure but sometimes, while under that pressue, choses the wrong option (this is just a coaching thing).
* Has the pace of a Clement
* Is a good overhead mark
* Can take a contested mark
* Tends to kick wide (possibly under instruction)
* Sometimes gets out of postion when the ball is coming in fast (Experience will fix this)
* May need to gain a yard in pace when he plays 1's

What do others think?

Theres a lot to like about him, give him another pre-season to put on some size and you can pencil him in for round 1 2007.:thumbsu:

Ja, clement, presti, obrien and maxwell down back next year, is there room for jason cloke?

I like the feisty ones :)

He has never dissapointed me when I've seen him play at Willy this year.....The kid can play good size, good skills, strong mark, pacey looks the goods........P.S Expect Rusling to play Friday night ;)

I really like the look of JA. You say he is light framed but he has the body type that will easily take on more kilos, so size is not a worry for me. Skills look good and he really backs himself in a contest which is also good. As you pointed out, decision making seems to be his weak point at the moment but I see him taking a regular spot next season and in the long term being a replacement for Clement.

Someone (Gotch or Malthouse) must have had a word in his ear, because he has tightened up his game since the beginning of the new football season. He is still undisciplined every now and then, but he has a bright future ahead of him.

Brad Gotch said he started the season off slowly but has come along in leaps and bounds

I was impressed watching him yesterday. He's a very creative and attacking backman but I was a little dissappointed how he got beaten a few times in the one on ones.

But what I later realised was that in the VFL, he is taking the oppositions number 1 backman. If he comes into the seniors, this wouldn't be much of a problem as you'd have Clement, Presti, Maxwell taking the best 3 forwards. This would allow JA to play to his attacking game and play a bit loose. I'd love to see him get a run in the next few weeks.

Good player to look forward to. Devolopment is something that will be taken on board, and wouldn't expect him to play this season, even though his form and the lack of in the seniors, may get him a crack (won't happen).

I reckon he's a certainty to get a run soon. Looks a long term prospect, as long as he doesnt kick out of bounds on the full at the kick in!!

Agree with much of what has been said. He seems to have the type of physical attributes that can be built on, and therefore each preseason would see him get better and better. I wouldn't mind seeing him come in this year anyway just for a bit of a taste against a Carlton, PA, or Kangas. As has been mentioned, he would take the third of fourth tall, so it would be a good little bit of experience for the lad. I have him pencilled in as holding down fullback after Presti steps aside, and from what I have seen he has all the attributes (with the possible exception of genuine heigh - at 191 may not be able to handle the new wave of KPP players 196-199 cm)

PieLebo87
14 Aug 2006, 16:57
Play Him In The Seniors Before Round 22!!!

Jabso
14 Aug 2006, 17:10
This may sound complicated but 191cm is enough to cope with even the tallest key forwards. A mark is rarely ever taken at full stretch perfectly vertical while leaping as high as you can. Most of the time a forward has to lean back and hunch over to get leverage over the backman who is positioned behind him and usually standing up straight. Then there are other variables such as the backmans leap and arm span as well as his ability to knock his oponent off his leap and position him off the flight of the ball,

If height was the only thing Sandilands would be deadly up forward but he is pretty average down there. Wakelin was 191cm and was never dwarfed by the likes of Ottens.

Apparrently alot of the boys down there dont like JA much. His opinion of himself would dwarf the eureka tower.

Most willy boys cant stand him either.

In saying that though the kid has potential and if he wakes up and realises that he is not a superstar yet he may actually become a very handy player but from all reports when he first arrived at the club this year his head was stuck so far up his arse that they needed the jaws of life to remove it.

Also rubbed up a very high profile player the wrong way in an intra club game pre season.

Let me put it to you this way, don't come on here slagging off about something/someone you don't know anything about. If all you hear is inuendo and rumour then leave it at that and don't say anything. You claim you have "facts", be prepared to back them up and prove it. CT, In all the time I have posted here, not once have I seen you post positives about him, you mostly say he's middle of the road or just OK. One time you even told me to **** off because I differed from your opinion. Some of you blokes absolutely thrive on hearsay and rumour and love to drag a bloke down just because he has an off day, rough few weeks or is just not playing well. I look forward to the day John makes his debut, but I tell you what, I pity him for all the abuse he is going to cop from some of the armchair experts who ALWAYS know better than everyone else.

As long as you know that mate because if he has a life in the A.F.L your going to hear alot more worse things said about your son than "He's up himself" (If that was even said at all) that's for sure.....I hear Collingwood supporters every week tear strips off Buckley, Fraser, Didak and co and call them every name under the sun.....And your son will be no different, but saying that I can't wait till he gets he's spot at Collingwood I've watched Willy all year and have been impressed with the whole JA package.........time will only tell.

Yeah, fair call to both of you. I think JA jas a good level head on his shoulders and he is aware he's going to cop loads of criticism throughout his football life and to be honest, I don't have a problem with that either. If he has a shocker on the ground the supporters will give him a bake. I haven’t seen enough of him to comment on his ability but if he has attitude issues it could be a problem. If all it is is confidence and duds are bothered by that then just have a think about FIGJAM and where we would have been without him over the last decade. There is nothing wrong with confidence and even a bit of arrogance if he can back it up.

This is the same Terry Keays that left the ground during a Grand Final in 2004 and went to the bar.

This is the same Terry Keays that arse****ed around his whole AFL career and got twatted off by two clubs - including Richmond when they were almost dead.

JA , all i can say is you are a brave man even posting on this board . These weboards thrive on rumors and heresay. rightly or wrongly it is part of the deal in being an afl footballer. you just have to look at the rumors about bomber thompson as to how damaging it can be or look at the rubbish didak copped for doing something most of us probably do on a weekly basis.

At the end of the day if you son is good enough then it is his football that will do the talking. Good on you for sticking up for your son but it might not be a bad thing to ignore the rumors because it will get a hell of alot worse if and when he becomes a regular senior player.

good luck, hope your son makes it.

And even if he is a bit over confident , he would not be the first. He would be in good company. There's a bloke by the name of Aker who has had a fair career

Murray, here lies the problem with this country overall! Its called the Tall Poppy Syndrome! We like to cut down anyone who has ability, Confidence and Determination to make ourselves feel better about our own deficincies!

JA's father has every right to come onto this board like anyone else, its just that he has a son on our list that makes him different. Now why would you come to post on our board about someone that hasn't played one senior game? He is a bottom age player who will take time. I think he will be a good player for us.

This is the same Terry Keays that left the ground during a Grand Final in 2004 and went to the bar.

You're not saying he was actually playing in said Grand Final and left the ground to drink *****?

I had never heard this!

Where and for who did this happen?

If so, what a c***head.

I remember reading Brian Taylor's 1990 Diary and he said he and Athas Hrysoulakis had all the talent in the world but terrible attitudes!
