In an unprecedented move the UK Meteorological Office, in conjunction with their European counterparts, has agreed to rename one of the shipping forecast areas from 'Finisterre' to 'Fitzroy', with effect from 4 February 2002.

No other VFL/AFL club has ever received such an honour in the UK.

Fitzroy can be found between the UK and Spain, and if you find a map of the shipping forecast areas you will see that it is no drop in the ocean.

By the way, what is a shipping forecast area?

The sea around the UK and the rest of Europe is split into areas, and given a name, so that a weather forecast can be given for each area. This is the first change of name for many decades, if not longer.

This means that if you listen to the forecast, on the radio in the UK, each morning etc, Fitzroy will be mentioned for ever more!

It's a pleasant sort of honour to have but the main question is what sort of area did we get?

If it hasn't been named before it sounds like it's in the middle of nowhere.
