Last night's performance was as close to old fashioned football that Port has played for a very long time.
It was very refreshing and exciting to watch a team committed to attacking the ball, the body and the GOALS, with the passion and desire that was synonymous with Port Adelaide sides of the past.
The big screw punt from the young fella late in the last quarter, from which Pettigrew marked and goaled to seal the win, epitomised the attitude of the side last night.
By kicking long, even if Footscray got the ball from the kick, they would look up and see a wall of Port players 40 to 50 meters away and as a consequence, it made it very, very difficult for Footscray to get the ball over the Port wall. Of course, the long kick forward allowed the Port players behind the ball to pick up their opponents, which they did and Footscray were under immense pressure to find a forward player free.
When Port play the "modern" game of ring-a-ring-a-rosie, chip-chip and they lose the ball, because the Port players behind the ball when the ball is lost are only 10 to 15 meters away, it's a simple matter of getting the ball over the defensive wall. THERE IS NO OFFSIDE IN AUSTRALIAN RULES FOOTBALL !!!
Let's hope that for the rest of the season our team is not over-coached and the players are encouraged to risk life and limb and attack.

Agreed. Football played the traditional Port Adelaide way. Makes me proud to be a supporter. :thumbsu:

Funny what a difference winning or losing makes.
Watching the game live what was extremely obvious was that our players were running back to zones rather than manning up. I also recall at least one occasion when we had no-one in our forward 50 and perhaps not in our forward half. Nothing too different from our usual defensive gameplan.
It worked this time and the Bulldogs for some reason had no leg speed to exploit it. Mentioned leg speed because that is usually how sides make us look bad when it doesn't work.

What was obvious though is that we had a few marking targets up front and used all of them rather than go through Tredrea and ignore everybody else else. That meant that no matter which side of the ground we were attacking from we would use long passes, when appropriate, rather than halt and either switch sides or wait for Tredrea and half the opposition side to get there.

Do not mean to sound negative as it was a great win but let's not get too carried away just yet.

How about the old fashioned footy tactic of playing one of your ruckman in the back pocket, Brogan, from the start of the game. When was the last time in an AFL game a ruckman started in the back pocket? I reckon Lade may have played there in 1997 or 1998 but not fom the start of the game.

The four man interchange bench killed that off.
