Hey Guys / Gals ...

I was wondering if

a) anyone went to the annual City Versus Country Cricket Match at Junction Oval, I believe yesterday - if so any results, anyone want to give a game summary?

b) why isn't this stuff put up on the official melb. website ... it could have been a good day to spend out??

c) it's good to be back!

Welcome back.

That cricket game seems to be a bit of a tradition. That is one training session I would not mind attending although I doubt the standard of cricket would have been that high!

Welcome back TAA.

i am wondering the same thing. Why the hell arent these things put up on the official site. I was spose to be in melbourne last weekend (but i am coming soon) and yeah i would have loved to have gone to it.

I know there will be a major overhaul with the main site, and that sportsview isnt running this season which i think is good, cos they did an absolute crap job, but yeah they need to update it more often.

and dees01 ur so wrong the standard woulda been very good having guys like Brad Green (who captained the winning, U15 Australian World Cup side) and Shane Woewodin (who got through high skool on a cricket scholorship) and Jeff White ( well whitey grew up playing cricket down the same club my brother did and well i did and he is very good too) so just saying there would be alot of talent! but yeah i so want scorecard

First of all my deepest condolences to Walshy and his family. I hope he is holding up ok.

Secondly quit your bitchin', the official site DID put a report up, a really funny one actually written by Febes:

City vs Country Cricket Match
Report by Steven Febey

Well it was on again!

The annual City vs Country Cricket Match. A contest which sees all of Melbourne come to a stand-still as this keenly fought battle takes place.

Over the years Country has etched it's name into the record books by winning all but 2 titles and so with its tail well and truly between its legs, the City team was out to settle the score and regain some credibility.

The venue has changed over the years from the turf wickets of the Ross Gregory Oval and Old Scotch to the concrete wickets of Anglesea.

But this year would be different, the game would be held at the picturesque Junction Oval on what at first glance looked like a green-top, which could cause a few problems especially after a weekend of rain.

Both sides were missing some very experienced players. Names like Schwarz, Brown, Rigoni, Nicholson and Ward would be reduced to carrying the drinks and cooking the barbecue.

Signs were good for the City after winning the toss and electing to field and see if they could get some early life out of the new wicket. After a slow and steady start the Country lost their prized batsman, Brad Green (Australian Junior Cricket Star) for a disappointing 10 runs.

This was the start of the rot for Country, losing their next 3 batsmen, A McDonald (8), Febey (3) and potential game-winner Yze for a duck. Steady contributions from Woewodin and Robertson restored some pride until the latter was caught from what was clearly a no-ball.

When Country's captain (Robertson) refused to leave the arena, I couldn't help but feel the similar frustrations of the captain of the Australian eleven. After the police were called Robertson finally took his bat and under hand-cuffs, was escorted off the field. The rest of Country's innings was lacking something - heart, desire and pride, but a quick look at the scoreboard, the only thing lacking was runs.

Some lusty hitting from new recruit Luke Molan (24) got the score up to 109. One point of interest after the umpires had conferred over the excessive appealing of wicket-keeper, A. Leoncelli a quick penalty by the ICC was handed down and he was forced to stuff a pair of socks in his mouth for the rest of the match.

With such a small total set by Country, City thought they would get the runs quickly and send in their gun openers, but as they were still eating, Leoncelli and Neitz came to the wicket instead.

This pair's striking of the ball was clean and crisp but Leoncelli's calling between wickets was the complete opposite. The pair of socks in his mouth had become very soggy and a wet patch had formed on a good length. What at first looked like his nervousness a closer look revealed it no more than Leoncelli dribble.

City's openers had given them a good start, some poor fielding and bowling by Country actually saw "extras" leading the run-chase.

Travis Johnstone (17) and troy Broadbridge (32) ruined whatever chance Country had of winning.

The pair put on a 50 run partnership and the contempt they showed the bowling side was no more evident when Travis took a phone call mid-pitch - it was Schwarta wanting to know if he could get $10 on the next at Eaglefarm.

Clint Bizzell brought a whole new level of professionalism to the City side and his 3 wickets were invaluable, but someone has to tell him not to bowl under-arm ala Trevor Chappell.

Cameron Bruce led his side well, not that anyone listened to him.

All in all it was a good day especially for City who have won 3 of the last 5 encounters. Well done Broady for the Man of the Match and thanks to Toby, the curator for preparing the mine-field for us.

Country will have some sole-searching to do and reputation and ego will be considered when next year's team is announced.

Bragging rights to City for the next 365 days!

Disgruntled Country supporter
