View Full Version : Should we try and trade up in the draft?

With this years draft looking deep should we try and trade our first round pick and an expendable player for a higher draft pick?
Ideally it would perhaps enable us to get Gibbs or James Sellar.
Would you think we should offer our first + Reilly for example and then move on up from there?

No, Reilly is a number 10 pick and a good player trading 2 players in for one possible hyped up player is not a good move especially when we have Douglas and Pfeiffer.
Who is willing to trade anyway, everyone sees it's a deep draft.
Skipworth doesn't seem to be able to get on the side but is performing incredibly well in the SANFL if we aren't going to use him trade him.

No, there is no point trading up, and anyway, to get someone like Gibbs or Seller you would have to be giving away an awful lot and as far as I’m concerned it’s simply not worth it. And besides, there is so much depth in this draft there will still be gems when it comes to our pick.
I have a feeling Sturt’s Thomas Hurley could still be around when we have our first pick, he’s snuck under the radar due to the big names available this year but nonetheless will be a beauty with pick 15 or 16. He will develop into an extremely good midfielder, and on the weekend he had 26 possessions, 5 marks and was named BOG.

Do you think Adelaide will be chasing a small midfielder with it's fitst pick (ask yourself whether you would have raised that player if he had not been a South Australian??)
Would have thought Douglas and Porplyzia (yes Porplyzia into the midfield) would have covered those areas.
We do need a 188-192cm defensive player with good marking, great ground skills and agility to replace Bassett and Hart who will be retiring soon.
We also need a tall forward for obvious reasons

Our first pick WW will be the best available player.
After that we look for needs.
Rucks - OK atm but get Sam Jacobs or a Jessie White if they are available late in draft
Key Forward - need a Kurt Tippett type critical
Key Crumber - need a Clayton Collard type - critical needs pace
Key Midfielders - never can get enough of these - one to be an outside player a la Shane Edwards type another to be hard at it - a la Ricky Pettard
Running backman - a la Shaun Grigg
Key tall Defender - a la Ben Reid Murray Bushrangers who reminds me of Hart in physique but is a bit taller and a left footer.

We should do anything in the trade season that will be of benefit to the club.
Whether that be trading players for picks, trading players for players, trading picks for players .... whatever. Who knows what will be thrown up at trade time.
As long as the moves we make benefit the club overall, Im happy.

Tippet dominated at Championship level in Division 2 but there are some queries that he was a man playing in juniors. He does have a lot of potential though, he is a basketball convert just like Maric and has only played football for a few years. I like the look of Grigg. Big possesion getter, he just gets in the right places at the right time.
Ben Reid will be a project player, which I think is VERY VERY big risk. Not sure if he will make it but massive potential tobe a very very good player if he does make it. Theres quite a few young lads from Queensland eg. Pettard and Proud who could go top 10. Proud could be around our pick so watch out for him.
One player I like was Schmidt who had a pretty good carnival. Looked very good in the match I saw. Should be around our pick as well. A tallish midfielder who dropped back in defense well. The best crumber will be gone in this draft by our pick Most likely. Leroy Jetta. What a gun. Reads the play so well and has explosive pace. Does the freakish things that you think is impossible. Can play in the Forward pocket or in the midfield and does very well in both areas. The only query is that he is very little and small, only 175cm but he might be taller now. He will get drafted and will go early as he hs pace and instinct that you can't teach. Has got some tricks up his sleave. If we do try trade up Leroy Jetta is worth it.:thumbsu:

Why on earth does Reilly's name come up when trades are mentioned? He is a quality young man and has shown loyalty to the Crows. If he is even mentioned in trades what message does that send to players who are loyal to Clubs. I know that trading is necessary but we should try and develop players who will play their careers at one club. We are getting a nucleus of players who have played all their careers at the Crows.15 of the 22 players on Saturday have only played AFL with the Crows.Of the remainder Thompson,Bode,Welsh,Clarke and Bassett were South Australians returning to Adelaide from other VFL clubs. That leaves Massie and Stevens as "interstaters" given another chance at a second VFL club, and those 2 have become loyal Crows. I think James Fantasia and the recruiting staff are on the right track. Remember 5 weeks ago they were geniuses to many posters!
Stick with them, they have an insight into trading and drafts and have learned from some drafts that did not do as well as anticipated.

I hope that we try and get some natural footballers and try and make them athletic as project players rather than athletes into footballers - it would make for something different

As long as the moves we make benefit the club overall, Im happy. That is true. Doesn't make for much of a debate :p but that's the problem with common sense. :)
What we (the supporters, or the Club) should not do, is go into the trade period with a determination to trade ourselves up high enough to get Gibbs or Sellar, "whatever it takes". That way lies - Nose. Face. ;)
