View Full Version : Who can we afford to trade?

With all this talk of Melbourne being heavily involved in trade week this year, who are we going to offer if we go in for the likes of Aker, Davis, Polak and co.
Seeing as its a superdraft this year, you wouldnt think we would be all to happy to give away draft picks. Who'd you be willing to give up?
Green perhaps?
Possibly even Daniel Bell who hasnt shown all that much?

You'd get nothing for Bell. I'd be satisfied with using Green or Miller as bait.

Yeah there's a place for Green in any side in the comp. However he's not, and probably never will be, a required player in any side.

Forget it, Green won't be traded. He's actually had a pretty good year up to this point.
I don't think we actually have a great deal to offer other clubs. Players like Daniel Bell haven't come on as we wanted them too, but they won't get us guys like Akermanis or Polak.
Someone who might be worth at least SOMETHING is Paul Wheatley, while Ryan Ferguson might attract a little bit. Miller is an option, but ultimately the club rates him highly, so he won't go anywhere IMO.
Others like Motlop, Read, Smith etc. will probably just get delisted.

How dare you speak of 426 in that way!
I think any negative comments regarding 426 should be an instant 4 to 6 week holiday from the Melbourne board.

I think Bell has more value than Wheatley because we know Wheatley won't get any better but there is that slight chance that Bell will come on. With Neitz nearing retirement it may be a bad idea to get rid of Miller. That'd put an awful strain on Dunn.

Didn't we almost flog him to Hawthorn for some nobody in the trade period last year? And that was coming off a good season for him. This year he'll play 3 games and won't have any value.
No trade value, however, doesn't mean squat. I'd much rather keep hold of him.

I agree. I'd like us to keep Fergy and besides he has no trade value..we rate him more than any club and if he has a decent run with injury he'll be a good player.
In order to get someone like Aker, Green or Miller seem the most likely choice of trade. Green is solid without being outstanding, capable of doing some freakish things up forward. He would have the highest trade value of anyone we'd be willing to trade.
I think we should hold on to Miller plus he would have a low trade value. I think he could be a good backman though and Brisbane might like that to fill the shoes of Michael

Miller
you guys should really get rid of him quick whilst he still actually has any value.

We almost traded him for Sewell, which would have been alright, i think we should trade Wheatley. Other clubs/media rate him higher than the general dud that he is, and i think we should get rid of him before they realise he's not that good.

Players I'd consider trading:
Brad Miller
Brad Green
Paul Wheatley
Daniel Bell
426 (blasphemy I know!)
The Adelaide clubs would fancy the last two I reckon.

What are you talking about, 426 trades worlds :D .
In seriousness I'd trade Wheatley and Bell, and I would consider Green although I doubt it.

If we seriously chase Akermanis though, what do you think the club would part with to get him? Picks, or would they take a risk and trade a player of some real value? I think the 5 in the leadership group or untouchable... okay, no-one is really... and others like TJ, White etc won't go anywhere. So how do we get him, if we really want him?
My Hawk mates were happy that the Fergie/Sewell trade didn't go through either, they reckon Sewell is a good player.. although they could use a tall defender now!

Being a bit harsh on Green, i think he has had a good year, although he is probably one who could get us something substantial in a trade. I doubt they would trade a leader of the group, particularly after the whole Woewodin uproar, which eventually turned out right i suppose

Errr... Nathan Carroll?
Imagine a backline without Chopper.
Nicho and Dutchy with the turning circle of a large boat and the speed of a disabled turtle... we'd conceed 700 points a match!
There is hope for 426 and I have a feeling he'll get a one year contract.

Don't deflect stuff off to Dutchy - he has been fantastic down back for us this year. We all know his weaknesses, but he plays very well to his strengths.
Nathan Carroll stayed around because we struggled down back, and he improved out of sight. No doubt about that. But he had a role to fill, especially when it became obvious that Nicho wasn't up to it, and Bizzell couldn't get his body right.
And we always think Godders is gawn, but his work ethic and determination to get the most out of himself keeps him around.
I don't see Nick Smith filling any of those criteria to stick around, all that saves him is that fact that he's a tall player who can take longer to develop.

Fitness is a massive issue.
Carroll struggled with injuries for 2 seasons before he finally got a full pre-season under his belt, same deal with Nick Smith.
As for Dutchy, he looks a hell of a lot more fit this season IMO, and I never said he wasn't doing his job. He is doing a great job, but the type of forwards that suit him, are a dying breed. Carroll and to a lesser extent 426 are a long-term investment.
Look at it this way, if we delist Nick Smith we gain a few dollars. We won't be able to trade him, so we may as well keep him on minimum wage for another year. If he comes good with another solid, injury-free pre-season, great... if he doesn't, we lose nothing.
Get rid of Nicho before you get rid of Nick I say.
P.S.- we forget that he is only 22, same age as Rivers and Miller. Ferguson and Carroll are both 25.
