From our time in the AFL Gav's been my favourite (Hodges pre-AFL days).
Humble off-field, whilst that rare combination of tough yet fair on-field, with a never say die attitude.

A champion in every sense of the word. One that outside Port and Essendon fans has (due to his lack of interest in putting his face into the media at every chance) not got the recognition he deserves. When people talk Buckley, Hird, Voss, the name Wanganeen should be there as well. 2 times premiership player, Brownlow medallist, club champion, multiple All-Australian player, club captain, 300 game player, won and saved countless games off his own boot, meets every criteria in my book.

Who gave him the nickname the Indian Rubberman? Was it Lou Richards? IIRC Lou stopped working for 7 after the 86 season when Broadcom and the ABC had the rights to VFL games. When 7 got them back in 1988 he was working with Max Walker at Ch9. These photo's show how rubbery Wangers got at times.

The supporters club have been informed that Gavs lap of honour will be around 7.45pm.

Power supporters and football fans in general will have the opportunity to farewell Port Adelaide and Essendon champion Gavin Wanganeen on Friday night at Football Park . Wanganeen will do a lap of honour before the game at approximately 7.45pm. Fans are encouraged to get to the ground early. Many of the Power's former players will also be on hand Friday night. Former vice-captains Brayden Lyle and Darren Mead will be amongst around 20 past Port Adelaide AFL players who will be on the field to farewell Gavin.

A True Champion, A Example to everyone on and of the field........and a sad year, to know that we will never see this great pull on the boots again!!! I'am so glad me and Valsey made that trip back in round 1 for his 300th, we saw him play his last game.
