Coming up to 10 years since Footscray changed their name to Western Bulldogs in an apparent attempt to encourage business and supporters to jump on board. Considering the club is forced to play games interstate for revenue thus hindering their chances of higher finishes, do you guys think the name change has made any difference.
My opinion for what it's worth is that they probably lost 5,000 supporters due to the name change.
Thoughts !!!

You come up with this tripe every twelve months simply to stir the pot.
Rack off!
How many supporters did Sam Hunt lose last week?

I just think its topical considering yesterday the club admitted it does not want to sell home games but it has to due to lack of revenue. If the 5,000 supporters who walked away from the club after the Smorgon lead takeover returned you would not have to sell away your premiership chances.
Every 12 months when I come up with this topic I hear from people like yourself about how better the club is being known as a generic name like Western. Lets be honest, 10 years down the track and still the same problems. Just admit it hasn't worked and go back to they clubs name of Footscray and get on with it.
Just think in 30 years time you will be telling your grand kids about Chris Grant and they will be telling you that according to official AFL stats he played for 2 clubs. Footscray and Western.

Adding no doubt that something like......
"Why do they say geelong players carry handbags?" "Well Johnny" will come the reply..." They have been doing that since Adam was a boy"
Now muck rack else Jack!
BTW, nice freaking handbag!!

Why is it that when you bring up a topic on a site that you do not support, all you get is people attack you about your club. Try just debating the issue rather than attacking back with crap.

We have no problem with visitors to this site who wish to discuss matters of interest.
S/Stirrers like you are another matter.

Probably because we've already discussed it with you.

and Im sure there was one more too.
But anyway I'll play along.
Where did you get this phantom figure of 5,000 members?
Have you noticed how many extra sponsers the 'Western Bulldogs' have compared to the time of the 'Footscray Bulldogs'.
Ditto with members, where we now have a Bulldogs RECORD of 26,000+!
I find it amazing that we lost 5,000 supporters but gained almost 10,000 members.

Impressive isn't it? That we can lose 5000 yet gain 10,000;)

I couldn't give a fat rats clacker what they were called. I'd suppport them no matter what.
If 5,000 did drop off as a result then what does it say about the intestinal fortitude of those weak, insipid individuals?
It's an absolute honour to support the Western Bulldogs/Footscray.
If you are a true supporter you just can't turn it on or off like a tap.

Seriously, what do you care?
I would be more worried about the state of your own club at the minute.
The Footscray/Western debate is pointless, so get over it.

the truth is we are the Footscray Football Club trading as the Western Bulldogs. Nothing in fact has changed. We still are the Footscray Football Club like with have been since.....well....you blokes started wearing handbags.
No dabate required. Your post if based on nothing but your own incorrect assumptions. We have many more members today than in 96. Your thought process is about as healthy as the player relations at Geelong.
Im all for returning to Footscray. I know it's not a popular opinion ON THIS SITE.
Footscray is the most famous suburb in west, footscray embodies everything that is the west. Everyone knows that.
If we were moving our base out to the new outer western suburbs e.g. taylors, caza springs etc. etc. then sure....change the name. But we're not -we're rebuilding our old base....Footscray.
I actively encourage the use of footscray - I hope others do too....

Well I do recall the last John Pakenham thread was spoken about a few weeks ago when his website was posted on here. I also posted a thread earlier in the year along the lines of......'if AFL had change of heart re: Vic clubs and we were forced out what would your pref be'.........most were peeved with the thread......but those who did respond were not so concerned about the footscray name or location.

I'd say its pretty split.
I think part of the reason for the name change, if not THE reason was for marketing purposes so that the club would appeal to a wider community.
The jumper still has FFC on the back, it's still Footscray, still the Bulldogs, still operating out of Footscray, still red, white and blue.
Sure, i would have preferred it to remain as the Footscray Bulldogs but i can see the reasoning behind the change.
It's still the same club.
Oh and btw - Club: Geelong?

So if everything is the same....why the need to change? I feel if marketed the right way the Footscray brand is far superior to 'western'.............western is generic.......it's used by clubs, companies all over the place........Footscray is unique, has history and is a true location.
