with essendon, collingwood and carlton not winning a flag between them since 2000, 1995 or 1990

how sad is it that the three clubs in the subject have not been able to put forth and win a flag

the interstate dominance is even more pertinent when you look at it like this.

the dees, saints and cats windows are all almost shut too.

dees - terrible defence, neitz on last legs and a plethora of downhill skiers[ read johnstone, yze, white]. bit sad when mclean is the one and only player who could be counted on to contribute each week.

saints - ruck is the worst in memory, defence very poor [fishers excluded], gehrig retriring, harvey retiring, hamill retiring [surely the worst trade in history - a key forward who doesnt kick goals on 500k+].

cats - average at best, a good "team" with no pace, no stars and no forwards. of the three at least they have time on their side and tom hawkins

very sad that none of the above with all their draft picks, trades and chest beating have not even come close to winning a flag.

Don't worry Matera, at least one of the two clubs that is capable of challanging the interstate dominance won't be down for much longer and you will have something to fear again.

jeez i think your overdoing it. saints could still be around if their old lot dont retire melbourne still has youth in their defence (miller, carroll, ferguson even though they arent that young. and melbourne have found a bunch of youngsters like dunn, bate and mclean sylvia rivers n jones which will be damaging in the next year or so. so it isnt all doom and gloom. as for the cats i seriously dont know what happened to them. saints defence is quite strong too they have voss, gram, macguire and their forward line will still produce with riewoldt and kosi and maybe gehrig if his hunger has returned.

to cut it short. never underestimate a team who thought last year adelaide was going to win the minor premiership or wce to reach top 4 or sydney to win the flag. anything can happen.

Not even close?!?! Surely you jest! Have you forgotten that we made the grand final in 1997 and were cruely robbed of another grand final appearance (and premiership) last year? But more importantly you seem to forget that 2006 IS our year and we're marching along beautifully, coming good at the right time of year!

And dont for a second think that the big teams won their premierships legitimately! Salary-cap cheating, corporate fat-cats the lot of em! Now they rightfully suffer at the foot of the ladder as the Victorian clubs of TRUE spirit and grit slowly rise up! Underdogs no more, Overlords for ever more ;)

Mate this analogy is about 3 years old.

Defence is one of the best in the league now. Johnstoen and White are anything but downhill skiers, Yze - fair call. McLean the only regular contributor??

Never heard of Rivers, Carrol, Whelan, McDonald, Davey, Bruce before then I take it?

dan warna
17 Aug 2006, 14:27
our offense is average but our defence is second best in the league atm on current form.

meguire is a big loss, but still...

I dont think we can win a flag unless the others fall over, but we are certainly playing good enough to be a solid finals contributor.

This post is obviously a windup. For starters St.Kilda are right up there with the best defence in the league for the past 3 seasons and at the moment are 3rd just behind Sydney and Adelaide.

As for the window closing, that is just rubbish. Consider the following Riewoldt, Kosi, Dal Santo, Ball, Goddard, Gram, Montagna, Sam Fisher, Maguire, Leigh Fisher and the Clarke brothers who are all in the low 20's along with established senior footballers such as Voss, Baker, Gehrig, Hamill, Hayes, Hudghton and Milne. Harvey, Peckett, Thompson and Powell are all veterans but have played their part so far in 2006.

The ruck is an issue, but now Kosi is back that should improve. Harvey and Gehrig will be playing on in 2007 and quite rightly so as their form is very good.

Hamill was never bought to the club to just kick goals. His pressure, chasing, tackling and leadership are why he was secured on a long term contract. Sure it is frustrating he is out injured but he will be back. Maybe we should have picked up Jade Rawlings or Jonathan Hay instead?

How is Geelong's 'window' nearly shut when they consistently field one of the youngest sides in the comp?

They do not have a single player over the age of 29 FFS.

Carlton Vs St.Kilda - Played 200 - Carlton 156 - St.Kilda 42 - Drawn 2

Ok, but consider this: Of Carlton's 156 victories:

1) Take away 54 of which Carlton was clearly in breach of the salary cap;
2) Take away 49 in which Carlton players were in abuse of performance enhancing drugs;
3) Take away 33 in which St.Kilda players were forced (at gunpoint) to "play dead";
4) Take away 19 in which St.Kilda players were severely undermanned due to injuries, hangovers etc; and
5) In relation to the 2 draws, both involved crooked Carlton time-keepers and paid-off umpires and as such would have and should have been outright Saints victories in the vicinity of 8 goals plus.

So there you have it. A more realistic head to head count should read:

Carlton v St Kilda - Played 200 - Carlton 1 - St Kilda 199 - Draws 0

Think you got the wrong end of the stick mate. I never said we don't have any forwards just not an out and out gun key position forward. I said Chapman, Ablett and Scarlett were stars. I was pointing out to idiodic supporters from other clubs that we haven't had a pick above 7 which most other clubs have helping them rise to the top because they are picking the cream of the crop year in year out.
