The Beach Boys - An American Band
Currently out of print, took me forever to find it. BUT VERY VERY VERY much worth the effort. Sensational footage, and covers the Beach Boys' career till 1985, when it was made.
The Beach Boys - Endless Harmony
Made in 1998, is a little more up to date. Covers 38 years of Beach Boys magic in around 90 minutes, again with sensational footage and surprising detail.
The Beatles Anthology
10 hours of Beatle Heaven!!!!!! :D
Brian Wilson - The A&E Biography
This is a MUST SEE for anyone who is even remotely interested in Brian Wilson!!!!!! Absolutely incredible detail, great footage and yeah, focuses on more than his music. Amazing.

Rockumentaries all go a bit like this"
Struggling small gig band loses member and takes on replacement.
Suddenly gets big record deal.
First album success.
Behind the scenes, things are going badly with; drug problems, artistic distemperment, personal relationship struggles, key members wanting to take the band in "a different direction" etc.
X amount of albums are released, but band is only together in the studio and on stage - otherwise not on speaking terms.
Most egotistical member finally disolves band. Fandom shocked, but insiders see it coming.
Proceeding years terrible. Band members lose all their fortune through financial mismanagement or savage drug habit. Some band members release solo effort record which sucks Occasionally a solo effort is very good.
Band gets back together for reunion tour. No axes have been buried, it's just that everyone is flat broke and reuniting is the only way any of them can think of to get some cash. If one of the solo members were successful, getting the band together takes an extra few years. If things are desperate, band may reunite without the successful guy.
Band tours. They may actually release a new record. This record always sucks, but it doesn't matter as the actual live performances are a compilation of their greatest hits anyway. Everyone looks horrible. The once very sexy women members look rode harder than a cokey prostitute. The once verile long haired rock god men, are now balding, fat and they make Keith Richards look healthy.
That's the way they go. Which is my favorite? I don't know. Pick one. ;)

Oh, and I forgot something. 80% of the time, at least one of the original founding members is dead. Thanks, Lioness for reminding me of that fact by bringing up the Beach Boys. ;)

The skit on Saturday Night Live that has Jim Morrison forming a band in heaven with Janis Joplin, Louis Armstrong and Keith Moon among others.
This is Spinal Tap is all quality.
For more serious rockumentaries, the Rock Family Trees series Black Sabbath rocko was very good.
Judas Priest's "Metal Works" video is excellent too. Just the right amount of song footage amid interviews and narration.

with all due respect Darky..the Sabbath rock family tree special was cool but i felt a bit of a let down for me because they didnt hardly touch on later
history of vocalists where the band took Tony Martin who has recorded as many albums as Ozzy or Dio.No mention of Martin is pretty senseless even if he aint as legendary as Ozzy...and no Glenn Hughes mentioned as a singer on Seventh Star.

That's true TD - but I must say I never really noticed, or at least, it never really bothered me. My favourite part is at the end when they show a shot (video) of each band member in a solemn, serious pose while their "what they have done since Sabbath" info is up on screen. When Ozzy's turn comes, he's waving and sticking his finger up at the cameras, grinning like a schoolboy. :D Very funny stuff!
The Black Sabbath Story Vol's I & II are better in covering the FULL span with every band line-up and every album up to 1992, but the Family Trees is more enjoyable for me to watch because it's shorter and there is less music footage interrupting the sequence of interviews.
I think for fans of Ozzy & Dio-era Black Sabbath, the Family Trees series is just as good, if not better than the Black Sabbath Story.

Good call Twiggy on Decline of Western Civilization. There are two separate films. Part one looks at the Los Angeles Punk Scene. Pretty interesting and well done film but it is Part Two which is a riot. Subtitled The Metal Years it is a very funny look at the Los Angeles Glam Metal scene.
Love Bill Gazzari-the 75 year old club owner with the porn star lookalike sitting on his lap proclaiming "Rock n Roll Forever"!
Chris Holmes from WASP is a riot and where else would you see a drunk Ozzy Osbourne attempt to cook himself some breakfast?
My favourite scene is where the unknown band play a song called "Russian Winter" and try to burn a Soviet flag but can't get the thing lighted. The other great scene is all the unknowns telling the director "I'm gonna make it".
Spinal Tap is obviously king but Bad News and More Bad News are also definitely worth a look.

Yep the "im gonna make it" scenes are hilarious. Talk about DOOFUSes!
The ugly groupies are pretty funny too. Pig alert.
and that band playing Russian Winter is called London. Again losers!
I have heard of Penelope S's Punk version but never saw that. I own the metal one on video.

The Filth and the Fury!
I really enjoyed the British series 'Dancing In The Street', screened on Channel 2 a few years back. It was a 13 part series which covered rock'n'roll from the beginning of the '50s thru to the present day. I have a few episodes on tape, my favorite being the 'Crossroads" episode, which covered the 'British Blues Explosion' of the '60s, featuring bands such as, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, The Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, etc,etc....
where's wally?
Back in the early nineties we would spend every weekend watching Skid Row's Oh Say Can You Scream.
Watching these guys run amok across Japan was a p i sser. But it was your typical road video interspersed with live concert footage. We watched it so many times we knew all the dialogue - verbatim.
