I suspect Denis will put Thornton on Richo initially, but at some point Setanta will be given a go. I’m looking forward to this contest. Setanta is one of the few in the comp who can easily match Richo in terms of height and mobility. Lack of experience is his obvious major disadvantage at this stage, but the matchup will be intriguing. No doubt Setanta realises that doing well against Richo would be huge step forward in terms of his development, and I’m sure he’s prepared well. Setanta is a confidence player. When he’s uncertain he makes mistakes, avoids contests. But when he’s sure of himself, he hits packs hard, takes on the opposition with flair and breaks lines, using his speed and size, with a touch of arrogance at times. He certainly adds X-factor to our lineup. While he doesn’t lose his confidence, Denis is doing the right thing giving him AFL game time. I don’t mind the occasional stuffup because it’s a good investment for our future. :)

Hopefully Setanta turns into a real important player for the carlton backline. Physically he is exactly what we need!

really all Setanta has to do is punch the ball or try and outbody Richo so he doesnt get near the ball ....

easier said than done - i know.

1.
I'd love to see Carlos start on Richo, give him confidence from the start, playing on a big name. If it goes 'pear shaped' so be it, but I reckon he could do alright and if nothing else would learn a lot.
2.
Carlos has improved every week over the past few and has really shown some skill.
3.
Even when Buddy gave him a bit of a touch up L/W he came back on and was pretty solid, doing some nice things.
4.
He can take a good pack mark and knows when to punch, although he needs to ensure the punch goes to advantage or neutral. He should watch some old tapes of the 'flying doormat'.
5.
Yep watching the 'wild surf' can be at once exciting, frustrating, thrilling, oh no!, but thru it all you can see the sheer determination to get better and suceed.
6.
What a great story, let's all hope he does make a real go of it and he gives Richo the mother of all hidings!

No, Thornton must play on Richo. We play our best backmen (who's in good form) on their best forward.

Play Setanta on Jay Shulz or something and play Lance at CHF.

Not sure if i'd play Setanta on Richo. Richo could really damage his confidence if he gets onto a roll, which I hope he doesn't. T-Bird has to be the first option, and he should play on him all day. If Richo runs up the ground, then let him. He's posessions up on the wing are far less effective than what they are when he takes marks inside 50.

When the young Irishman's confidence is up he is a beautiful judge of the ball through the air. He has the agility and speed to more than just stay with Richo. Whether or not he can handle the bulk and the experience of the veteran Tiger is a moot point. Should be interesting if he does get a chance to line up on him. And if he does take Richo and keep him quiet, I can see a spot in our defence becoming a regular thing for Setanta! May the luck of the Irish be with him today!

Shame it never happened

Game was virtually over into the 3rd qtr and Pagan makes no moves?

What do we have to lose in trying Setanta on Richardson?

You'd think NOW would be the time to experiment!

I got a suggestion for an experiment: let Mitchell be our defacto coach so Pagan can train horses until his contract runs out!

Just on O'Hailpin.... this bloke is going to be a magical player. What about the run he shows, the guts he shows. I love watching him play!!!

Bit early to tell, but he could be a very good player. If he can overcome the weaknesses in his game (progressing very well at moment) he will make it. He still can do something great, than something stupid a minute later but if he can get over this, he'll be great. That run and pass to Walker was great:thumbsu: .

Aside from a few fatal moments of confusion today, I thought he was great. He wasn't the only one to have problems being parked under the ball next to Greg Stafford, and I thought he did better under the onslaught than most.

Now, could someone that big, quick, nimble and aerobic be an Goodes/Kouta-like on-baller in a few years? Of course, his decision making and disposal would have to improve a lot, but I can see that happening with every game.

I'll just throw that idea out there as a debating point for now.

He showed some signs, but he really *has* to improve his kicking.

Decision making will come with experience and time. In the meantime he has to work on his kicking!

Let's not worry about his kicking, I actually feel okay when he has the ball to kick.

He is no worse then Waite, Fisher, Wiggins, Walker and a number of others at kicking. In fact, a few of those are worse at kicking then O'Hailpin himself.

His kicking is solid enough for mine at the moment and will continue to improve.

On yesterdays peformance I thought he really has come a long way.
He still needs to improve on a few areas but he is progressing really well.
Interesting to hear Gary Lyon's comments on him.
Lyon reckons that Carlos is at the same level of his career as Jim Steins was at the same stage. That's gotta be good.
