View Full Version : Internal Trial

Well there were good signs at the internal trial this arvo. Ill go thru some main points first:

- Dean Brogan has died his hair this semi blonde colour. Now he looks like Darren Smith. Not just his hair colour, but how he runs, kicks, moves...everything about him has an awful resemblance to Darren Smith

- If Jaxon Crabb isnt put on the senior list im gonna go down to Alberton and scream bloody murder at Mr Williams

- Brent Guerra is more bald than Francou

- Barham is useless.

Was a good day. The players that didnt play were: Primus, Mckenzie, Hall, Koula, White, Wilson, Brooks, Paxman.

Jarrad Schofield would of been best on ground. He had about 30 touches and kicked 2 goals. Quite simply he looked awesome in the centre. Jaxon Crabb would of been next best...he looks a lot like Josh Carr in how he plays...but is quicker and kicks the ball better. He was an absolute star. If he doesnt get put on the senior list something is wrong. Harwick looks very good in Port colours. Cassisi played well. Barham played 3 quarters yet failed to get a touch and looked like a headless chicken most of the time. Nick Jackman can play footy! Kane Cornes would of been third best on ground and he played well in the middle. Lockwood played the whole game at Centre Half Back and was the best tall man on the park...could he be our new tall defender?

Ill go thru all the players:

TEAM A:
Monty - played alright. Kicked 2 goals i think and got a few touches

Shaun Burgoyne - impressive. Is nearly as tall as Darren Mead, is damn quick and can definatly play football.

Josh Carr - played alright...a bit quiet

Hardwick - was hard at it and looks great in Port colours. Played up forward for a quarter....got a lot of the ball.

Cocky - played very well. Took some good marks and did his usual flashy moves

Tredders - played ok but got beaten...took some good marks, kicked a few goals...played a half at Centre Half Back

Kane Cornes - very very impressive. Played in the centre then up forward and got a lot of the ball and is one smooth player

Lockwood - best tall man on the ground playing at CHB on Barny. Actually looked damn well in that position!

Kinger - Still hasnt learned how to kick yet and got a few touches

Ackland - got beaten by Brogan in the ruck but played ok when moved forward

Mead - did alright at half back

Guerra - quiet first half but did some very good things in the last half

Chad Cornes - had his usual 2 or 3 brainfades when 'attempting' to kick at goal but played alright.

Nick Stevens - his usual brilliant self

Roger James - his usual consistent self

Jaxon Crabb - this kid tore the game apart with his bursts thru the midfield and long kicks to the forward line. Should definatly be put on the Senior list ASAP

Jackman - looked ok...took a speccy and did a lot of running. Looks like he could be a good player in the future

TEAM B:

Wakelin - fuked up about 5 or 6 times but defended well

Wanganeen - played the whole match in the centre and got a fair bit of the ball

Lade - looked good...very good. Was quiet...but one moment nearly set the crowd on fire with a pack bursting sprint with the ball, dodged two players....then booted it on the full.

Schofield - easily best on ground. Had a truckload of touches and got 2 goals. Used the ball very very well.

Peter Burgoyne - didnt do much at all really. A few touches here and there

Francou - was quiet

Dew - only got a handful of kicks

Bishop - played ok in defense then in the ruck

Brogan - was very impressive. Killed Ackland in the ruck and got a lot of the ball...did a lot of one %'rs. Only problem is he looks exactly the same as Darren Smith.

Morgan - the first time ive seen him in a game situation and he played very well. Spent 3 quarters in defence with success on Cornes, then kicked a goal when moved up forward. I hope he can stay fit, cos he certainly can play

Michael Stevens - did a few good things and got a fair bit of possesions

Cassisi - looked impressive. Moves a lot like Misiti...he really does. Hardly wasted the ball

Derek Murray - Looked alright actually...got a fair bit of the ball in the last half and kicked one or two good goals

Poulton - rugged as usual...had his 1 or 2 errors but overall played well

Thurstans - Beat Tredrea. Played a damn good game of football at CHB.

French - Played at CHF, but got thumped by Lockwood.

Allan Murray - this kid is smooth. Took some great marks and used the ball well.

Barham - played 3 quarters up forward, yet did not get 1 possesion. Looked like he had no clue at all.

overall it was good. Good to see some players i havent seen before. Team A won by about 5 or 6 goals in the end. Certainly wet the appetite for the season to come

I couldn't pick it at first but when he was playing they seem like twins!!

- Brent Guerra is more bald than Francou
I wouldn't go that far! :D

Thurstans looked the goods, at the presentation they said he will probably be playing early on in the season. Hope he does!!
Mead looked very tired and puffed out.

Nick Stevens was good, made a few errors but made up for it with some good play! It was interesting to see him doing a lot of the kick ins for yellow.

Roger James needs a haircut.
And so does Wanganeen.

Cassisi, Schofield and Crabb were very good.

I didn't get to see the whole game but was impressed from what I saw. 8 days till the real thing!!

If Essendon play the usual half-senior side, then based on today's performance against Sydney, Port should beat them comfortably.

Funny how people see things differently, eg Darren Mead.

I went to the internal trial yesterday and was really impressed, far more so than in previous years. I suspect that some players only "turned it on" for a short time, but nevertheless they showed that they had not lost any ability. I was particularly impressed by:-
- Toby Thurstans. I have been watching him improve since he came to us. In an early game for Sturt he really seemed to be lacking, and last year during the internal trial he had improved markedly but seemed to drop his head when things did not go right. None of this yesterday, even though Warren Treadrea can play a lot harder. Toby showed even more improvement in ability and much more poise! All he seems to need now is some actual game time at the highest level. Mind you, we have great depth and flexibility now so it will be tough to get a game. Players are not going to get honeymoon periods to prove themselves as with Chad Cornes.
- Shaun Burgoyne. I really was not aware that he had so much class. Now I see why he was chosen so early in the draft!
- Darren Mead is back - I was getting a little worried late last year.
- Michael Stevens has improved and kicked some nice passes to forwards. But has he improved enough?
- Derek Murray kicked a couple of goals! (after the year book comment!)
- Allan Murray and Nick Jackman moved well and took a couple of nice marks.
- Brent Guerra seems to have improved in confidence.
- Jaxon Crabb looked OK. Hobbled off. I hope that his injury is not too bad.

the kid has a LOT of skill, pace and surprisingly height. He would definatly of played last season had he not been struck with OP.

He has improved enough definatly to be given a major chance in the Ansett Cup. I believe Cassisi and Stevens should be our two wingmen in the Ansett Cup...whoever shows more gets the spot come round 1.

- Brent Guerra seems to have improved in confidence.

when did he ever lack confidence???

Hehehe. That's quite humorous!:D

Thanks for the write-up Macka! Good to see the boys playing well and not slacking off after a much improved 2001.

Just on the Crabb thing...when is the earliest we can put him onto our senior list? If he's that good, they should be moving towards that immediately.

Can do it right now. Michael Wilson moves to the long-term injury list and Crabb comes in.

They won't rush to do it though, because....

1. Crabb can play in the Ansett Cup anyway, so they wouldn't need to promote him until the regular season.
2. If they don't have to promote him at all (thanks to a currently listed player like Brent Guerra coming up trumps), they save money.

I would not be promoting Crabb regardless at this stage of the year.

Remember Richardson kicked 10 in an internal trial for the cows last year. These games mean zero....let him cool his heels in the SANFL for while...we can promote him at any time if his real form warrants.

My comment: "Brent Guerra seems to have improved in confidence."

Macca19's reply: "When did he ever lack confidence??? "

--------------------------------------------------------------

Agreed. Should have said "even more confidence".
