View Full Version : Trent Sporn?
I know this guy's had plenty of opportunity before at senior level (8 games this season, last in Round 15 and struggled at senior level) , but all reports are he's starring at the Bullants (46 possessions, 16 marks 3 goals this week) can anybody who's seen him play the last few weeks let me know if the stats are flattering or he's really travelling well (what position has he been playing). I've noticed he been emergency for a few weeks, will he, or should he get a last shot in the final two games?

Proves its a major gap between AFL and VFL. Can't see the blues giving him another chance next year though, to much of a risk involved.:thumbsd:

Spot On. :thumbsu:
He's had his chances and he's failed to take them every single time. Although there are other players in front of him, i'd imagine he'd be delisted at years end.

Is he out of contract at the end of the year?

Is he out of contract at the end of the year?
Not sure, but as wiggo is out of contract at the end of the year, I'd say Sporn would be in the same boat as they were drafted the same year, and sporn hasn't done much in recent years to say he would have got a longer contract than wiggo. So I would say with confidence that he is out of contract.
Is he out of contract at the end of the year?
I really don't know to be honest. I'm sure someone on here will be able to answer that for you.

I'm good friends with Trent so what I can tell you is that yes, he is out of contract at the end of the year.
Don't know what the go with him is dammit. He showed in the early part of his career that he could play at the the highest level and then drifted away. You would think the way he is playing at the moment and absolutely dominating that he has the goods if his confidence is up.
However he has been given a fair few chances so its one of those ones that will go either way in terms of if he gets another contract. Maybe a 1 year deal could be a go?

I really don't know to be honest. I'm sure someone on here will be able to answer that for you. AFAIK these are the players out of contract at the end of 2006:
bannister, betts, blackwell, chambers, davies, fisher, hartlett, houlihan, livingston, longmuir, mcgrath, prendergast, raso, russell, simpson, sporn, thornton, wiggins
With Kouta re-signing that puts more pressure on the likes of McGrath and Bannister (who I'd both like to stay).
Scenario 1: Essendon & Carlton finish as they are now with 3.5 wins (we get spoon)
Scenario 2: Essendon gets one more win (we get spoon)
Scenario 3: Carlton gets one more win (they get spoon)
Scenario 4: Essendon & Carlton both get one more win (we get spoon)
We'll have picks:
Rnd 1 2 3 4
--- -- -- -- --
1 1 1 2 1
P 17 17 NA NA
2 19 18 19 17
3 35 34 35 33
4 51 60 51 49
PSD 1 1 2 1
That's probably six new faces barring trades. I'd say that Chambers; Davies; Livingston; Longmuir; Prendergast; and Sporn are all gone. Unless some gun slips through to pick 66 or thereabouts, I think Bannister and McGrath will be safe. Of course, trades change everything.

NO. Unfortunately he has had enough chances and is really not part of our future.
I would rather see Ryan Jackson promoted and given two games, keep Jesse Smith in the 1's as well, if we need to replace Wiggins.
We also have Luke Blackwell and with Wiggins out could also be Jordan Russell's chance to come back in and finish off the year well.

I have been really impressed by the way both Jordan B and Cory have gone this year and would love to see them stay.
The first six mentioned, unfortunately, have to go. Not one can add anything that we need and have had enough opportunity at either CFC, elsewhere or both.

Gone. It's just easier to delist him.
Gone. It's just easier to delist him.
Spot on Stokesy...............he has had plenty of opportunities to cement a spot in the side and has come up wanting at all times. He is just another one of those players that dominates at VFL level, but can't cut it at AFL level.
He'll be delisted as I can't see anyone wanting to trade for him now.

I should add that we will have to promote or delist Batson and Aisake O'Hailpin. I don't think either of them are ready for senior footy yet, so it will be interesting to see what happens there.

Exactly right WTTF. Too many chances to cement his spot, and too many players are now ahead of him - Bannister and McGrath.

On top of that we would have to dump Smith and Batson off our rookie list. We can re-rookie them if we want to I guess but there is a risk someone else will grab them. Batson has just started showing something according to reports. On top of that we would like to promote Flint and maybe Jackson. We don't have to but it would be nice.
Will be interesting to see what happens.

I watch most VFL games and yes he is a star in the VFL but so is Bannister but some players just cant do it when they are against better players simple as that

Aisake is a international rookie, so he can stay on the rookie list for another year, international rookies get 3 years , where normal rookies only get 2.

Would Raso be safe? I know he's a project player but will we persist?
Pretty much agree with those 6 delistings tho at this stage

Sporn is a Croweater, so is there any chance of a trade/exchange with one of the South Aussie AFL teams? I'd be looking for a Victorian on the Crows or Port's list, who has been in the system for a while, has potential, but wants to come home. It's worth a try? Does anyone know of any such player that may fit the bill?

Certainly agree Sporn should be delisted, but then im thinking of the interest he got from Adelaide. They had some success by taking an underperforming, yet highly drafted and talented Massie from us a few years ago (in exchange for a complete dud). Sporn is in a similar boat (to an extent). Could it be worth chucking him in the seniors and seeing if he performs enough to garner a nibble of interest at the end of year fishing period? Especially if his VFL form warrants it.
PS. I am aware this is a long bow to draw, but still, may as well put it out there

We tried to get the crows interested in him last year. They weren't.

From my understanding it wasn't that the Crows weren't interested, it was just a case of one or two things not swinging the right way for the deal to be made. It might be worth a try to play him in the ones for a couple of games.
Maybe the penny has dropped with him thats its all over rover if he doesn't put his body and mind on the line if he does get one last crack at it. I don't care who you are playing against in the VFL, if you can get 80 possesions in the last 2 games and kick 8 goals as a midfielder then you know how to play the game.
Oh and a minor correction, he actually isn't a croweater through and through. He grew up in our great metropolis Murrayville, NW Vic. he moved to Adelaide after that to play for Nth Adelaide as thats where his old man and Uncle played. Sorry to be pedantic :D

From my understanding he was given a thorough going over medically and they weren't impressed with what they found.

Be interesting to know what was on offer for him last year if he had passed the medical.

He is hot favourite for the JJ Liston Medal. Will he win it. Who will if he doesn't.
I hope he does win it, then it will create more bargaining power for us in a trade?

I'd say chambers, davies, livo, longmuie, prenda, sporn... so yeh proboly six new draftees hoping for a rainsey at pick 70 something... thatd be nice... but hopefully sporn can fo out on a high and maybye even get the 1 yr deal
If he's body was pretty beaten at the end of last year, maybe it explains why it has taken so long to work back into form. If he is right and he plays well in the last couple of games, I would be happy for him to be retained. He's got heart and early in his career showed some real skill.
Maybe Carlton will only delist a 6-7 this year. My choices would be:
1. Chambers
2. Longmuir
3. Saddington (looks like he's body stuffed unfortunately...I think Swans are paying most now anyway so can delist?)
4. Prenderghast
5. Teague (just pay him out)
6. Davies (a real pity...so talented...could he be rookied under new rules???...would be worth a shot?)
7. Deluca (to make way for PSD ruckman..again)...he's real use is as a marking forward (who can't mark)..but Bryan can do that and player better around the ground. We will also have Kennedy. Also, hopefully Whitnall will return to the forward line as Bower gains experience and Lance gets even slower.
Rookie list
- delist Batson
- retain smith on senior list
I know some player have contracts but I think that shouldn't come into it. We need to choose the best players irrespective of short-term financial problems. And I don't think the above would have huge contracts anyway.
I would keep Livo as backup should Thornton go down. Not sure if Bower or Hartlett will develop the strength quick enough and O'Hailpin might not be up to it next year. Lance can not play full back. I think Livo has been given a very bad run of injuries and has been pulled in and out of the side without obvious cause....seems to be a favoured whipping boy at the moment. But I think he's a decent stopper whose been overwhelmed playing in the worst spot in the league...carlton full back. He'd also be cheap ;-)
Of the other so-called hacks - sporn, bannister, wiggins, mcgrath - i think their consistency in the vfl and in the alf (wiggins, bannister) would suggest they might be good for depth. I think we can't delist all the early 20s as they provide hard bodied depth as well as give strength to the bullants. Having a strong bullants team is important to instill a winning culture for the late-pick recruits and rookies playing in the 2s (e.g. the Rasos, Flints, Edwards etc). Bannister and Wiggins also look like they could continue to develop into good regular players.
