View Full Version : Bentley - pretty classy

Pred

Just watching the replay of PA v CWD.

At one point in the first, Bentley, in one motion, snaffles to ball in front of someone with one hand, dodges around an opponent, turns on a dime and boots the ball towards the goalsquare. Classy stuff - he looked like a seasoned performer like Burgoyne or the Francou of old in that move. Could be some good things ahead.

The first word that springs to mind is class.

I know it doesn't mean a great deal, but all the commentators were very impressed with him too, especially Cometti.

couldnt agree more,
he almost pulled off another moment of brilliance when two collingwood players were looking for the ball, but he held onto the player a little too long. he'll learn from it.
the thing is also, he isnt the jared brennan classy either:which gets him in more trouble than good.

Jared Brennan is far from Classy. I'd say ar**y describes Brennan.

Cometti would be impressed by an Ian Downsborough tazo in a packet of chips.

I rate Bentley very high - the best of the rookies by far.

His debut was solid - sometimes the best way to be - creep up gently so that there is no wild speculation and big heads.

I think that he would have debuted earlier if not for injury at the wrong time, but he has been brought along at the right pace and has been developed well.

He got quite a few possesions on Friday night but I noticed he had a tendency to be scared of going in for the ball and didnt convince me when attacking the opposition player.

For some reason I actually think our recruitment improved out of sight once Stewart left. No disrespect to the 'guru' but we seem to have scored a 75% success rate in our first draft without Stewart when our first pick was 30-something. Credit where it is due, Moylan and co are doing a very good job.

Bentley in his second AFL game played like a top 10 draft pick. Sometimes it is not about where you pick them but how well you search at the bottom of the barrell.

Id heard that Stewarts role had reduced somewhat prior to him leaving.

Do we still have any locally based recruiters given Moylons in Victoria _ I dont want us to be missing out on any SA based diamonds that are hidden away.

Class is a good description. At the game, said he looked balanced and poised. Reads the play pretty well. Overall pretty impressive for a 2nd gamer. :thumbsu:

Interesting thought. I agree. Stewart picked his share of top 10 duds whereas Moylan seems to have a very shrewd eye for players not rated by other clubs who can really play.

For some reason I actually think our recruitment improved out of sight once Stewart left......It's not so much that but that injury has perversely helped us by making us play some of our warehoused talent. Bentley was not picked up by us, or by anyone, other than as an afterthought on the rookie list.
.....Bentley in his second AFL game played like a top 10 draft pick. .....This is true. He must be close to a Rising Star nomination.

Moylan listens to the guys we have watching the local footy leagues each and every week whereas Stewart tended to go with his own thoughts.........

A young James Hird? A long bow yes but gee he reminds me of Jimmy, just the way he moves without trying.

Absolute gold. I'm locked onto the Bentley bandwagon. It's only 3 games but this kid will ve something very very special. Smooth mover, great awareness and excellent disposal. Laced up Shaun B and Ebbo from pressure situations. I like this kid. Will be elevated to the senior list and move up in gurnsey listing probably to Francou's #10.

he does have some, but a bit more would be good. Get him looking a little like someone like James Hird.

Matt Thomas looks very slim as well and could do with some added muscle which would complement his game style very much.

Yes i do. Sorry i should've put that Bentley like a number of our young players needs to fill out or get more upper body strength.

Thomson, Chaplin, Bentley, Carlile etc could all do with more upper body strength especially the young players who will be playing midfield roles next year.

Did a similiar thing with that blind turn against Rielly on the outer wing. His kicking is excellent. Makes a few mistakes with his handballs. Could do with a bit of time in the gym especially if he is going to spend time in the midfield. As I said in the other thread I am a fan.

My sister and her friend have bought seats on the wing, 3 in one row and 3 in another right behind them so it makes it easier for you have a chat with one another in the breaks. My sister's friend told me her daughter is going out with Greg. Said he was basically a nice, shy, young man who was dedicated to his footy. Good thing that he is not shy to take on an opponent and back himself. I guess you look at the game a little differently when your in her shoes.

It's fine for yougsters to go out and look great doing cameos, but if they are to be relied upon week in, week out, they are going to need to be able to match it pound for pound with the competitions heavyweights.

Watching the replay thought he looked like Andrew Obst.

As for the bulking up, any 18-19 year old is going to take a couple of years to get some real build up. You can't turn boys into men overnight. Some have that natural 'size' about them quite young but that is the exception, and some will never be able to pile it on.

I actually thought that a few of the crows players looked lighter than earlier in the year. We didn't seem as obviously out-sized as we have for a lot of the year? eg Goodwin appears to have lost a bit of 'solidity' - he looked skinny. Except Ben Rutten, who looked fatter, slower, and less fit than Dewie

Well if Bentley turns out to be even near as half as good as Obst was, then i'm sure that will be very happy campers. :thumbsu:

Yep, Danny Morton springs to mind as one who had trouble re gaining strength through weight training. I'm not saying that they should just whack on 10-15 kgs of muscle next year although that wouldn't hurt Deluca it's just that once some of these players start filling out a bit we'll be better off in the long run. I remember when we played Brisbane a few years ago that their players looked & played like gladiators compared to most teams, also the weagles teams of the early 90's intimidated teams because of there size didn't they?

Whilst I agree with the concept of our youngsters gaining some muscle, I actually think strength has dropped in importance in the modern game. Fleet of foot, good decision making and tidy skills have become the essential ingredients.

Look at the dogs, McMahon, Cooney, Griffen, Gia et al …

I was talking to a prominent junior coach in Melbourne who said a lot of scouts couldn’t really care less if the player isn’t hard enough at the ball or is too skinny, as long as all the other pre-requisites are met, could be why we’ve managed to get so many hard nuts late in the draft.

I don't think Bentley needs to put a whole lot more on, though a bit would be great. For his style of play, I don't think he needs to be a tank.

Thomson, Thomas, DeLuca, and Surj to a lesser extent could all do with some extra bulk. Thomas seems decently tough, but for his style of play, a bit more would be great. He seems more toned than big, which can be deceptive.

That's what i was alluding to but it may have come across that i wanted the Port players to look like professional body builders (my bad) an example of a player who i think has almost the ideal body shape for playing afl football for his size is Luke Power from Brisbane.

Thomson should try aim for a Daniel Kerr type build.

Thomas should go for Wilbur himself.

and Bentley for a Hird type build.

I recon Thomson should aim for a Brock McLean type build. He is already alot taller than Kerr.

Agree with the other two.
