As an alert player Neil with Peter Pianto, formed one of Geelong's greatest ever roving combinations. His quickness off the mark, clever anticipation and courage made him a highly effective team member. He was adept at reading the play and positioning himself astutely to gain possession of the ball. Around goal, he was particularly dangerous and was a deadly shot with either foot.

After retiring as a senior player, Neil was playing coach of the GFC Reserve Grade team in 1960-61 (Premier 1960) and non-playing coach in 1962-63-64. He won the Gardiner Medal (best player in the Reserve Grade competition) in 1960.

In Round 10, 1963 he acted as senior coach in the absence of Bob Davis, who had a commitment with the Victorian team.

He served as a GFC Board member from 1961 until 1983, including 1974-75 as club President.

In 1983 he received the Reg Hickey award for outstanding service to Australian Football.

From 1995 until 2006 he was a respected member of the GFC History and Tradition Committee.

He achieved much during his life outside football. At different stages he was a primary school teacher, a sports store proprietor and a long-serving state politician. He earned great respect as an excellent Minister for Sport and Recreation. He also served with great distinction on numerous committees serving the community.

He will be remembered as one of the greatest contributors to the Geelong Football club spanning almost six decades (1949-2006). As a humble, honest man he was never one to seek recognition, but was always prepared to assist the Geelong Football club in any way possible.
