Just wondering where people are seeing Bannister at the moment? Noticed he has been mentioned in the mvp for this round. Personally I think he is starting to show some confidence and composure.

He has always had height, pace and marking ability just seemed to lack decision making. I am now starting to wonder if he could be considered as part of our best 22 next year. Would be handy if he holds his form to rotate through the backline.

Also feel that perhaps Setanta could hold down FB next season with a summer of weights and skills work. Whilst he would perhaps be better across half back I feel that no one else is standing out for fb and that Thrornton should be released to HB.

Agree completely about Banno. He is really trying to give us some run from the backline. Setanta and Banno both like to run it out and it makes us look a lot better (when they hit a target). Hopefully they are both encouraged to keep working on that side of the game. It's good to see a couple of running defenders prepared to back themselves.

I don't really see Setanta as FB though. I don't know if he has the football nouse to hold a key forward all game.

I wouldn't mind seeing Bannister cement a spot on the half back line, thus releasing Walker into the midfield next year. He certainly has the height and speed to play there, and also the discipline.

As for Setanta, FB is just about the hardest position to play, and i'm not sure he is ready for that now, or even ever. I think he could be developed into a very good running CHB, as guys with his size and athletisism don't come around every day. I wrote in another thread that spending time in the backline with Lance would be doing him a world of good.

Bannister has copped it on here alot and been put in the same boat as prendergast, sporn, deluca and the like, who he is a class above. He proves himself week in and week out in the twos. Hopefully he can finish off the year well and he'll stay around AND get more of an opportunity.

We should let Setanta loose on a wing, his decision making on the weekend is what suprised me, you can see he is really thiking about what he is doing and is making mostly the right decisions before trying to execute them. I dont like him up forward at all, let him run.

Not too sure he'd actually make it in the midfield. His ability to read the play is what he is still struggling with, and you must have that if you're going to play in the midfield. Let him play at CHB, that way he gets lead to the ball, and with his size and speed, he really could develop into one of the premier defenders in the AFL.

I agree as well, he looked very vulnerable in the last line of defence on the weekend.Half back or wing is his go.

I was at the game on the weekend & saw his couple of runs on foxtel last night, his runs looked better on the TV than live at the game.

Another pre-season working on skills & body work in marking contests & he'll be looking pretty good.

Do you remember the job he did on Chris Grant. No run, poor skills, but more than broke even in one on one contest for most of the game. I think with his current rate of development he could hold down FB. Couldn't agree more about spending time with Lance - I had been wingeing about this all year when we went through the "Lets give Livo (yet) another chance thing".
Carlos has already become a reasonable defender, and at his rate of learning is not far away from producing some pure magic.

Jordan frustrates me. Looks a million bucks one week, flogged by a hack the next. Ripping it up in the two's doesn't count (does it Callum?).

I like the way Bannister goes about things.

Really hope he can play an absolute blinder in the next 2 weeks and confirm his position for next year.

On O'Hailpin, I like him as an attacking defender on half back, not full back.

I too would much prefer Setanta across half back. I just cannot think of anyone else with the size and speed for FB. Feel that if Setanta's confidence keeps growing that he could play well there especially on the taller guys. Perhaps he and Thornton could rotate there next year depending upon opponents?

Just because you play full back doesn't mean you can run and attack - actually quite the opposite, given that most FF don't chase well. Think of fletcher at his peak, SOS running of big Sav (ahhh, glory days).

I like O'Hailpin across half-back, also would be happy to see him get the odd run on a wing or in the ruck even. Jim Stynes didn't have a clue when he 1st started but eventually became, for a while, the best ruckman in the comp (not that Setanta's really like Stynes, but being both Irish and all....).

Bannister, to his credit has performed pretty well since returning to the seniors, and is a handy player to have around. I would play him off the half back line and sometimes even as a tagger where he can use his height, pace and endurance well.

Setanta is not suited to FB. Interesting to see where he will be put. IMO isn't suited to a midfield role, nor up forward. So I would have him play as a defender, probably on the oppositions 3rd best forward. Another option I like and would really like the club to explore more is playing him as a mobile ruckman around the ground. Sure, he doesn't have the skill to play as a number 1 ruckman, but he has the height, agility and pace to be able to play as a ruckman around the ground. Definitely worth a shot.

Needs to be MUCH stronger to ruck against most AFL ruckmen.

Not really. I'm not asking him to win all the time, just to be competitive enough.

Has a massive leap, so could use this to simply bash the ball forward. Sure, it may not be orthodox, but it could be very effective. Definitely worth a shot.

Setanta adds a lot to our team. He has attitude and flair. Is a freak athlete - can't think of another 6'7" player in the comp with his speed and agility. Provides lots of dash from the HB line. His run down the wing against the Tiges, reminded me a lot of Kennelly. Because of his size, he has the ability to bust tackles. Seems to take the risky option most times, and catches everyone off guard. His style of play is great to watch, especially after footy fans have been bored senseless by high possession keeping off styles that are trademark of teams like Freo, Bulldogs, Swans, etc. Still massive room for improvement obviously, but we have a potential match winner. :)

Agree once more Parrot,

Like the way you go so deeply into what you see and feel.

Interesting to hear a comment on White Line Fever where it was claimed that O'haipan is ahead of where Stynes was in his development at the same time

Sentanta wouldve been great against richo as he has the pace and strength to go with him, be nice to see him on a second big forward and maybye FB 2008...
Bannister has always been a class act in my eyes and is very good at his negating roles through the midfield and needs to be played there more often.

The pace yes, strength, nooooo.
But hopefully a big pre season in the gym and loads of kicking+++++++ practice. Hey, wouldn't it be great to see SOS at the club helping Carlos out - imagine, SOS and lance as your backiline mentors - he could be anything this bloke.

the big irishman is quickly becoming a cult hero at the blues which can only be good at attracting new fans and members which we desperatley need. Get SOS and ratten back as assistant coaches and we will be heading in the right direction
