As a proud Shepparton resident and mad-keen Geelong fan, I'm really proud of the fact the Cats will be involved in promoting Zaidee's Rainbow Foundation this weekend.
The full story is on the GFC website - all players, both Melbourne and Geelong, will be wearing rainbow shoelaces for the game, and I believe The Footy Show was going to feature a segment tonight about the Rainbow Foundation.
Seven-year-old Zaidee Turner died in December 2004 and wasthe only child in Victoria to donate her organs that year. The Rainbow Foundation aims to promote organ donor awareness, and has significantly helped raise the number of registered donors.
What the story on the GFC site doesn't mention is that Zaidee was from the Goulburn Valley, as are Steven King, Shannon Byrnes, Kane Tenace and Adem Yze. There's a really strong local connection there, and I'm so pleased the Cats will be one of the teams to draw attention to this fabulous cause. The AFL has been a little slow to get on board - the laces have already been worn by the Rabbitohs and Davis Cup players - but better late than never.
Zaidee's parents are magnificent people - they have turned a personal tragedy into an amazing driving force for a cause that could save many lives, yours or mine included.
So, anyone who is heading to Saturday's game, please take notice not only of Riccardi's very deserved send-off, but of the laces the players are wearing. If you're not an organ donor, have a think about it, talk to your family. It only takes a few minutes to sign up.

Rest in peace, Zaidee.
Erika.
