Speaking of Savatage there were lots of great under rated bands from that era.

The whole grunge and nu metal thing kinda poo poo'd all the good work of many many 80s bands. And they kinda became a dirty word in lots of respects for a time there.

Interesting that a lot of the grunge lords are now doing a backflip and paying homage to lots of the 80s metal stuff..dave grohl constantly wears metal shirts like Dio and Maiden

while metal band name checks are appearing in heaps of mainstream songs ie Sum 41, Wheatus, etc

What 80s metal bands do people still appreciate here?

Is there any other type of music?

Seriously speaking- Dave Grohl is one of a handful of grunge survivors that I can respect, he seems to be a metalhead at heart and I don't mind SOME Foo Fighters music.

Dude my CD collection is vastly 1970/1980/early 1990's...not a lot after that.

It's good to see that power metal is making a bit of a move to the forefront of the metal genre, ahead of all those Pantera soundalikes we had in the mid 90s and the whole grunge thing. It's about time music returned to value melody and guys ****ing their guitars.

The 80's is where most of my music comes from too, mainly hard rock and 'hair' bands, with a bit of heavier stuff thrown in.

Tesla is my favourite band, very underrated blues-rock band.
Also loved Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Iron Maiden, Dokken, Motley Crue, NightRanger, Great White, Rush, Damn Yankees, Aerosmith, 38 Special, Gary Moore, Van Halen (yes, including Van Hagar, but not VH 3), Warrant, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Poison, Boston, Whitesnake, Cinderella, Krokus, Skid Row, Twisted Sister, Dio.

From the 80's nothing beats Metallica and Slayer.

I suppose Motorhead just snuck into the 80's and are also awesome, but I still see 'em as late 70's. Same with Maiden.

Zeppelin and Sabbath were the fathers of the hard rockin/metal genre and are still without question the greatest!!!

Just on the 80's metal, there were times when it was taken too far and was laughable. Ynwie Malmsteen was a classic example. Outrageously good guitarist, but the music is good for comedy value only (I know there are some here that dig his stuff).

I still have Marching Out that a mate of mine found and gave me for a laugh (we're both guitarists) and I love putting on I Am A Viking. Lyrically, one of the funniest songs ever IMO! "I am a Viking and you will taste my steel". Gold!

Still, better backtracking for some Ynwie than listening to Creed, that's for sure!

Magnificent selection that... yes, I was into the "**** rock" more than anything else - maybe because I'm not a muso, or just because I'm shallow. It was always the melodies and riffs that got me, more than the technical stuff.

In my (3 disc :( ) cd player at the moment is Skid Row, Motley Crue and White Lion... and I love em all.

Yup, 1986 gave us:
Reign In Blood - Slayer
Master of Puppets - Metallica
New Order - Testament
Live After Death - Iron Maiden (Live)
Bedtime For Democracy - Dead Kennedys (not their best, but still a great album)

Almost as good as it got within one year.

Other notable 80's stuff includes:
Suicidal Tendencies (onya Santos!), Kreator ('Extreme Aggression was the ONE!), Coroner, Exodus, Death Angel, Misfits, Dead Kennedys, and about a million other 'thrash' bands that I can't remember off the top of my head.

Late 80's saw the beginnings of great bands like Death, Morbid Angel & Obituary from Florida too.

its funny when you mention 80s people for the most pigeon hole glammier bands. Lots of heavier type classic bands and albums came out in that period. Testament Slayer Anthrax and the bay area sound movement.

1985-88 was probably when the thrash movement was at its biggest. It really took off, before some of the bands changed direction.

Metallica are a great rock band, accomplished musicians etc, but any comparison to their thrash days is laughable. Anthrax were fantastic, but have slowed down and released some almost grunge-like stuff in the mid 90s. Their cartoon yobbo element is just about gone.

Megadeth have also slowed down, but in their case I think it's been for the better, as they used to but out albums with 5-6 filler tracks, now they are wall-to-wall killer riff-o-rama!

Sodom have been great for many years but are sounding more deathy with every album.

Slayer have been pretty consistent, although a part of that is 100-odd songs that sound very same-ish.

It's not really the same. :(

PS - One band that may or may not fit in here is Cacophony with ex-Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman and ex-David Lee Roth guitarist Jason Becker playing twin lead. Their debut album "Speed Metal Symphony" is one of my all time favourite CDs.

Some great thrashy riffs, rough as guts vocals from Peter Marrino, the only thing that made it not a genuine thrash album was the constant guitar noodling from Friedman and Becker.
