View Full Version : Did the Roos tank?

I find it hard to believe that any AFL footballer would not try. I also don't think a coach would tell his players to lose a game. In the past I've heard tanking mentioned in threads from this board many times in the past, and after reading some threads on the Kangaroos board it seems many of their supporters think they are better off after today's loss.

Why throw a game so you can move up two or three possies on the pecking list. Great selections can be found outside the top ten, you only have to look at Birch who could surprise many when the NAB rising star votes are counted.

A finish of eleventh - 8 or 9 wins - is pleasing for me, and a positive for the Hawthorn Footy Club.

I always like winning, naturally. And hopefully we beat the Cats to finish on a real high, then have a big summer and give the finals a shake next year. We'll be like the Bulldogs from last year to this (hopefully without their injuries though!!)

But the down side is that now we will have pick 6 insted of pick 3 in the draft. We have lost the chance to get Lachlan Hansen, a key defender who would have been ideal for us. They compare this years draft to 2001. In 2001 pick 3 was Chris Judd, pick 6 was Ashley Sampi. Absolutely no comparison. So by winning we may have cost ourselves the chance to get a future champion.

I HATE THIS DRAFT SYSTEM. It spoils victory and blesses defeat. Change it AFL, before it kills the game.

Did the Roos tank?

No, they are just a very bad football club.

Kangaroos didn't tank. They kicked 4 goals up to quarter time .. and then, they came face to face with their future.

we broke a 5 game losing streak to the roos and had lost 18 of the last 23 much more important than one place in the draft 9 wins this year 80% more than last year do that again next year and it 16 wins and the flag

Go hawks

what i found interesting was the commentators comparisons to the saints bulldogs match us being the bulldogs running style team but i think we can in future become the perfect blend of running play and tall marking inside 50

this is probably the one draft where picks dont matter much

everyone is gonna get a good player so its a nothing draft really

sellar at 6 will be fine id take him at 1 anyway if it was up to me

That's a false comparison if there ever was one

The Hay trade didn't make our club look like complete idiots :thumbsu:

We still win out of that. ;)

Don't reckon they tanked but was a shocking game. What is the point in playing like that when you are so low on the ladder? May as well let them run and attack, I couldn't believe how many Roos were in our defence at one stage. I normally don't have a problem with too many tactics when clubs are trying to win, or hold onto a lead, but when the bottom sides are playing the coaches should let them run and carry the footy.

it seemed neither team was confident having a shot outside 45m (probably b/c it was near impossible) - so both teams were looking for targets closer to goal. This rarely comes off when there's 2 or 3 zone defenders anchored 30m from the stix...

This makes me laugh a very bad football club. This is coming from Hawthorn supporters who`s club has been rebuilding for 14 years!!
We are a club that has had enormous sucess over the modern era that has not enabled us to languish at the bottom and pick up draft picks. Even with draft picks your still ****!!
We work with limited resources and still manage to never bottom out Hawks are running out of excuses another yaer and no finals when is this youth policy ever going to equate to makng finals.

But it sounds to me like your club's finally seeing the follies with topping-up and is now fully embracing the 'bottoming out for draft picks' philosophy, where's your pride in not bottoming out now?.

As for the question in bold, I don't want to give u an answer based on an educated guess, but i'll leave you with this thought: in 4-5 years' time you'll probably be answering the same question.

Probably when the players we selected in the draft are actually senior footy players and not young (some injured) kids who are not part of the current senior side.

The Roos have never really been in a financial position where they could afford to tank.

We tanked.

I'm not saying we went out there to lose, but that was MILES from our best side.

We didn't play Simpson, Grant, Pratt. We also didn't play young up and comer Perry.

You guys enjoyed the delights of watching Leigh Brown and Leigh Harding go around for us - some are suggesting for the last time.

Possibly the worst team we have picked for some time.

Geez Moran was nice tho, the guy has played about 60 games of footy, what a prospect.

Roo's didn't tank.

There is no way a team could play that bad on purpose...

After there recent drafting bungles and the need for a quality pick in the draft they couldnt afford not to tank

Their drafting hasn't really been that bad, IMHO.. but the trading has been abyssmal ;)

Does a bear **** in the woods... We tanked also, but unfortunately it was the greatest tank-fest of all time and we couldn't even win that battle...

Really disappointed we won't get Gumbleton, Hansen or Thorpe, but you never know maybe the player we get will be a smoking gun ...

Send Hodge our way and we still lose IMO. ;) No really, send him our way :).

Clarkson is a genius at pulling the wool over Laidleys eyes. Whilst Thompson has been very good for us, there was no point us getting him, and we would have been better to go to the draft with our picks in tact. Ditto Hay (besides the been good for us bit). Granted we drafted Lance P., but that rubbish still came from you guys which we were dumb enough to pick up.

FWIW, i dont think we tanked, i just dont think Laidley knows what to do, let alone how to win.

I'm thinking that you work with limited resources. We'd buy your club out if it was worth anything. ;)

It seems to be worth a lot of four points over the years.Would you like us to sell them all back to you for a reasonable price of course? ;)

Nah, but we'd love it if we could 'offload' Tim Boyle to the Roos for Pick 3?

It'd keep the healthy trading partnership between the clubs alive and kicking! :)

Throw in err......err......err......somebody of note, and we might actually give you back Thommo so you'll have a FF again. As long as you don't go getting him all depressed this time round. ;)

You mean like Zac Dawson? If Hay was worth 2 first rounders than Zac is surely worth at least Pick 3. :)

A Full-Forward?

Last time I checked, Williams with 60 is greater than Thommo with 54.

The only way you tank is at the selection table.

The problem I have with North is the crap they served up. I was there and that game was a disgrace. Moran ran his rrrs off but he was the exception.

They tanked to get an earlier pick than us in the draft, they did this because of Thompson and Hay deals and of course the better player.
