View Full Version : Kent Kingsley - a little perspective

It would be safe to say that Kent Kingsley is very likely to be traded/de-listed/retire at the end of 2006. He has basically had a terrible year culminating in yesterdays 1 kick and 1 handball.

Okay, so we know he won't be at Geelong much longer.

But for the people who abuse him constantly and taunt him, please don't forget for the last four or so years he has been our most consistent forward. Playing a position which his body size and ability does not suit him to, he has had to play the spearhead role.

He has won our last four goal kicking...with his only average season in that period being 2003 where he kicked about 35 goals in a team that struggled all year. Apart from that, he has kicked hauls of 57 twice and 48. We've also been a team that delivers the ball very average at times.

So what I am saying is show him some respect....criticise him on 2006 but don't abuse the guy and say he doesn't care and he has been a useless contributor to the GFC, because he hasn't.

I'm with you totally - before this year he had been good value.

I pretty much agree with ya there Chappy, and i have no doubt been bagging him constantly around these parts.. but you can also look at it from this point of view. Sure he has kicked those goals in those years, but if you'll check the behinds he kicked as well in those years, well.. i believe it left alot to be desired.

Secondly, cant you see the irony (and humour), that he is a full forward.. who cant kick!!!! :D

I guess we are just frustrated with him (and with the year we've had, it just adds to that frustration ;) )

Still wish him nothing but all the best.

Judged on impresions on the field he has given us all ample evidence that he is care-less. If I was in his position being paid to kick goals , I would have been kicking at goal for Hrs a day until I had a routine that was locked in and reliable. I have held this view for a fair time , I'm no Bandwagon jumper

In June , 2004 I posted this
Kingsley Wasteland
Kingsley is the ultimate frustration.A player with a talent and that talent is waste. The man fritters away chances that a quality player should not.A FullForward is basically a finisher,a man paid to give value to up field effort.Last week he should have had 4 or 5.Today the same.WASTE is a burden that places extra pressure on the players in the middle.Yes he leads well,Yes, he has good hands but his kicking is consistantly inconsistant. He had a great night at the Dome against the Dons but maybe in the sheltered ground it protects his very ordinary tecnique. The Kingsley time bomb is ticking, how long will it be before this kicks us out of a game?????

This guy would have absolutely no idea what his kick is going to do after he has kicked it, he just kicks at the space between the goals and hopes, bigtime. That equates to a Pro Dart player just aiming for the board. Have you ever seen a Pro Golfer just aim at the fairway? No he sets up to shape the shot to finish on the preferred side. His shot starts it at his initial aim point and allows his shape to finish where he wants it to finish. To do this he must have a very good idea what his swing will be like and what work will be on the ball. Now I don’t expect this level targeting from Kingsley, he is not Daicos but I expect all players especially a finisher on the forwardline to know what shape they generally kick. How many time would Kingsley be able to hit a designated target? Eg. out of 200 shots at a Goalpost and which side would he put most of the misses, are they pushes, slices, pulls, hooks and how many hits.

To me a FullForward, a man who’s bread and butter is conversion should know the answers to these questions. Thru knowing your abilities , refining your skills, confidence to perform in the heat of battle is developed. Do you think Lockett ever just kicked with the hope of good result?
As previously stated, the reason he frustrates me is he does what I think of as the hard stuff, he gets the ball , a lot. He creates space, he gives options He could be so much better than just an a run of the mill AFL player! The reason he gets away with it is lack of quality options at the club but it wont stay that way. The bell chimes for all and if one doesn’t get the hint then the hint will be given, just ask Spriggs. The side we are now putting together will get players interested in being apart of it. I know if I was a quality young tall I would love the chance to be on the end of the Cats Engine room
So Kent Wasteland better wake up or the thing that he will have wasted is the chance of a Football career and the chance to be a part of the new of era at Catland.

Times up for the Kent train, next stop , destination elsewhere

Neither will I. Yes he contributed 50 plus seasons but overall his wasted a lot more than he's delivered. Plus the minor details that he has been nothing short of pathetic in all Geelong's finals he played in. Plus having the tiniest heart in football.

Sod him. Don't let the door hit your arse on the way out.

Dont you hate pants?

Yes, kent is more than likely to go at seasons end, with the coming of young key forwards coming into the team of the likes of nablett and hawkins. He has served us well, when he came to the club I'm not sure if he was ever touted as a key forward and was given a huge burden of carrying our forward line the last few years while we were developing players. I will still take his 50 odd goals 167 behinds and many heart pulputations over the last few seaons from him over a forward line with no permanent key forward i.e. otto in ruck most of the game etc. He is a far better player than what he has shown this year, when he got on to the park this season, apart from the first two games delivery to him was absolute garbage and not to his strength (instead out in front on a quick lead where he can take it on the chest, it is put up to him in a contested marking situation) If kent does go to another club, I wish him the best of luck and hope that he ends up at a club where he isnt expected to carry a forward line and has a midfield that moves the ball directly and swiftly and can actually hit someone on the chest occasionly

There were two occasions on Saturday (that I can remember, there may have been more) where the ball was delivered directly to Kingsley, in perfect postion, and yet he slowed down in order to prepare to mark... but by that time Carroll had caught up and spoiled. He has lost the ability (which he did have a few years ago) to be able to take a mark in front of his eyes/chest at full speed. This is what a 'leading' forward must be able to do best, otherwise they will get tracked down. Sadly, if he can't do that anymore, he is useless, and isn't trade bait in my opinion.:thumbsd:
