I thought he played really well and has been in good form in the twos.
Best of luck to him and hope he recovers soon.

Terrible news, Lonners has played well in the second half of the season (in both the 2's and seniors) and no doubt will recover and have a solid pre-season to ensure that we see the number 13 running around in 2007.

Best of luck Lonners.

What terrible news, such courage to go for that mark, internal bleeding sounds so serious his family and friends would be bloody so worried.

Hope he gets well soon.

OMGosh! I'm still in shock. Poor kid! I feel so sorry for him.
I was talking to my dad about it before and he said that the same thing happened to Sammy Newman before finals one year. But he came back to play the next season. So you still can play with a kidney gone! Hope Lonners gets better ASAP! :(

I think Sam had part of a kidney removed, not all. But others have played with one.

And just in honour of the poor guy - can we start spelling his name correctly?

And the AFL website has the story with a video of how the injury occurred - isn't that, at the very least, tasteless.

Unfortunate.
Was a gutsy effort getting back to track the ball like he did. Saved his career with his overall effort yesterday but may have lost it again with that injury.

Ironic given the shoelace theme to the day

Gutsy effort tho

And he isn't.

This reminds me of Leo Barry's injury four years ago, where he was out for about ten weeks with a lacerated spleen. Fortunately, he didn't need to have his spleen removed.

Internal injuries of any kind are serious. I hope Lonergan makes a full recovery and returns to football next season.

Very unfortunate news...even more so considering he played the best game of his career thus far and is just starting to find his feet as a senior footballer.

100 percent guts.

:o I wasnt sure if it was to soon for jokes yet.

But all the best to him, he played really well and could be our third tall when Harley departs. Sorry Spencer, but Loners may just take your place.

Aw, man, it's so sad. I really hope he gets better soon.

I hope that he doesn't have to stop playing footy, he's such a young guy....

Why couldn't stuff like this happen to Kent Kingsley?! :P

That was a joke, by the way. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Not even Goldspink.

Always seems the worst injuries occur because of the most courageous acts on the football field. Hope you have a speedy recovery Lonners and hope to see you back for Round 1 next season.

Terrible news for Tom, the way the ABC reported it at first I thought he'd died!

I hope this puts a bit of perspective on the Josh Hunt incident from a couple of weeks ago, he copped a hell of a lot of criticism, here and elsewhere, for his supposed "lack of courage". Lonergan disregarded his own safety and has now paid a huge price, the loss of a kidney and an uncertain future in footy.

Yes it was gutsy, fantastic, courageous and inspirational, but it's not fair for fans sitting on the other side of the fence, or in nice comfy lounge chairs, to criticise someone's "guts" or "courage" and expect players to go in to a dangerous contest regardless of the risk.

We're talking serious and life threatening injuries here. That's way more important than whether you take a mark/go in to a pack etc. Be realistic.

I loved his courage, but I think courage needs to be tempered with wisdom.
There've been players whose careers have been shortened or ended prematurely because they were too courageous, Leigh Colbert for one.

Best wishes Tom.

Terrible luck for Lonergan. That is right up there with Marc Woolnough in the bad luck stakes..saves his career and loses it in one match.

All the best Tom Lonergan.

It is terrible news. If he doesn't play ever again at least he will be remembered giving his all for the Cats. He has gained so much respect from me for his game on Satrurday! He was great!

Probably safe to say that even though it was a career threatening incident, if he fully recovers it will be a career saving incident!

Good Luck Tom

I really felt sick after hearing this.

Not enough is being made of it either imo. People were more than willing to lash out at Hunt after shirking a contest, they should at least respect the players that put it on the line like that.

To the sceptics that Geelong players do not play with passion or pride, look at the efforts of some of the players. D.Johnson attacks the ball prepared to run with the flight, GJA hard at it all the time playing injured but you would not know it. I could go one and name many more they do play with pride and courage this is epitomised by the effort of Tom Lonergan going back into a pack, playing for his football future, as many have stated needed to show his worth.

He has shown his worth and unfortunately this may mean his career is over.

To Tom and his family I know many Geelong supportors are with you and your son and wish him a speedy recovery and if this is his last game of football thanks.

Hopefully if this is his last game a role within the club can be found for him. Player welfare or development come to mind.

Definitely bad news for Tommy, if he was tough enough to walk off the ground, he will definitely pull through the induced coma. Lets hope he makes it to the best & fairest well on the way for a good recovery. I give my sympathy to him, family, gfc and prismall, his house mate. :)

Do Geelong have a yearly award for the Most Courageous player? If they do they should rename it the Tom Lonergan medal.

my dad who was playing his first afl game (vfl in those days) for fitzroy had exactly the same happen to him in a pack sitaution....but dad split his kidney, luckily they sown it back up, and he lost half of his blood that is stored in his system. dad was in hospital for around a month and was told it was in his best interests to never play again!!!! sadly he retired at the age of 21... that was in 1983 and now we are in 2006 and doctors have advanced since then but by telling you this story i dont believe we will see tom lonergan ever playing football again!!!

all the best for him anyway....hopeful for a speedy recovery!!

Yeah hopefully the medical advancements do mean he can return or at least have reduced impact on his life from this injury (less than a month in hospital at least). Remember it wasn't that long ago 70's / early 80's that knee recon's could mean the end of a career. Another example of advancements are in recos my dad had one in the 70's when he was 18-20 playing in the SANFL and he never came back (played some games in the amature leages) but the scars on his knees look a hell of a lot worse than the players get now (to the point the doctors are talking knee replacement surgery)
