Hi Guys,
I was a big Jordan Lewis fan, as he added toughness to the Hawks... this year he has added diddly squat... he looks 7 or 8kgs overweight, and a shadow of what his 1st season suggested he could develop into....
I guess hes a player who will hopefully be flogged into shape by Russell in the preseason, and he might get back near the ball again.... I hope he turns out a good regular player for th ehawks, as we need a few mongrels in the side, instead of more blonde tipped pansy boys...

I think he does look a bit overweight the same way hodge was 2 years ago. Still think he has a good future. His season hasn't been too bad though.

I am with you mate he has a good future, at the start of the season lewis looked like he had lost weight. Once again 2nd year player gets the crap kicked out of him, haven't they heard of 2nd years blues, as te oppersition knows more about the youngster. I believe in the next year or two lewy will rip the game apart with hodge and mitch.

No offence, but are you actually a Hawk fan?
You hate two of our best draft prospects in Lewis and Dowler, anyone else on the chopping block?

I don't actually think he is over weight and he season has been good without being to special. Should finish around 8th to 10th in the B&F.
If he lost any more than 3 or 4 kg he would be just pushed off the ball to easily. He isn't fat, and certainly NOT overated.
The Hawks have plenty enough "ėnforcers" in our side V'burg, Guerra, Brown, Hodge, Lewis etc.

Is it just me or doesnt Lewis really step up when our "gun" midfielders in Mitchell and Hodge go down?
Lewis is a very good player, but has to share his time on field with other players. Personally I want him to get more time on a forward flank so he is on the field for the majority of the game.
Lewis is a gun!

He is a good, old fashioned throwback to an older time when footballer were enforcers, just like Gary Ayres. He is a footballer and not an athlete.

If he got to play 90% of the game in the middle which is his ideal position this thread wouldn't have started. I think we will eventually start Hodge, Mitch and Lewis in the guts with the pace coming from the 2 back flanks and the wings (Birchall and Tuck, Ellis and Muston):thumbsu:

He's had some pretty solid games this year. Its pretty ignorant to say that he hasn't done much considering he's a second year player. People have pretty short memories.
Will get better with more training and fitness, and has had limited time in the middle of the ground.

Justs needs a few hard preseasons to run and run and run - all thats really holding him back is a lack of a big engine and maybe a yard of pace. I'm sure the coaching staff are working on this but think it'll maybe take a year or two before his fitness is up to the elite level required to be a starting midfielder and we'll really see him start to impact games.
As noted above the injection of the pace of ellis, tuck and muston in the next year or two will also help take the pressure about pace off lewis.

I agree has looked over-weight this year but sh*t so have I, anyway I love the way the Cheif plays and he does stand up when the other stellar mid-fielders step off the park.....lets hope next year he steps up again...

You bet i am...
i dont hate either... im not sure u actually read my opening post did u? we need more mongrels with some guts in our team.. he certainly falls into that category...
If u want to get me started on someone i think is useless... start a thread about ben kane ;)
i said i liked lewis.. still do... but if u ask me lewis has gotten a little too accustomed to being an "AFL" player, and let it go to his head....
he is now overweight, unfit, and has a limited aerobic capacity... he has some very important attributes however... talent, guts and a bit of mongrel... hence why i suggested hopefully russel whips him into shape in the off season an he will realise his potential as a gun....

^Im sure with the new tracking devices used the coaching and fitness staff would surely be aware of his weight and aerobic capacity. But what can you do? Its now round 22, and any extra fitness work surely would be for next season. Bateman has warned teams to be prepared for a fitter and faster Hawthorn outfit, so lets wait to next season before this is brought up because it sounds like pre season will start early and fitness will be a major focus in training.
Lewis will be fine next season.
Jordan Lewis is 19, and not yet in the elite midfielder class. Clearly he hasn't stepped up in his second year, and with limited game time.
Why do we draft players who aren't performing consistantly at the top level after 18 months on out list. It's time we moved him on.

It took Hodgie a few years to develop an engine, and he was of the elite class, so lets at least give Lewis time to settle before making such statements, especially considering that if anything, he has impressed and been one of the better juniors in his first two years.

He's 20 years old and has played some very, very good games this year.
In fact, he put in blinders against Sydney, Western Bulldogs and Richmond. If he can reproduce that form regularly - and he's young enough to expect that he will continue to improve significantly - he'll be... well, let's not put too fine a point on it.
He has also been living this year under the cloud of a very serious police charge that could potentially have led to a jail term. Not the easiest thing for a young bloke to put to the back of his mind, even though he was innocent of the charge.
At the court case, about one month ago, the magistrate dismissed the charge and was quite scathing of the fact that Lewis had had to front for it; as it was based on the evidence of only one person, who was said in court to be jealous of Lewis.
This thread is overated (sic) and fat. Jordan Lewis will seriously embarrass this thread's proponent in years to come.

there were no statements made... just a question to stimulate discussion...
Lewis was voted our best first year player last season - ahead of Franklin and Roughead, it's hardly like hasn't been pulling his weight since getting to the club.

The thread title is a statement. The question only leaves two answers in that the statement is that he is either one or the other.
The question says he is overated or fat?
That gives you two options, both are negatives, and takes the focus off he's come along extemely well for a second year player.

this thread was to stimulate discussion and add other ideas about him, so we dont need to be too precious here do we?
myself, from a sports medicine background, i have various opinions about him... the title was a bit provacative.. but take the time to read further on and u will actually see i appreciate greatly the way the guy plays, as no one hates the soft hawks tag more than me...
and about the 2 hypotheses... i think no one can categorically say hes in fantastic nick? can anyone say his aerobic capacity has improved in his second year? i dont think so.. he doesnt look like he has bulked up with lean muscle mass to me, altho i havent seen him up close in a month or so... altho i will be flying over to watch them go round at the dome this weekend :)
as for having come along "extremely" well for a 2nd year player, i dont think he actually has come that far... others have developed far more, who he may have out developed in his first year.. evens out i guess... we all know he has the potential to be a little bit of a loose cannon... i just dont want to see him lose his way, as he could, and hopefully will be a very important player for us in the near future...

Looking for further evidence of improvement? Consider these:
- Buddy Franklin twice kicked six goals in a game while still a teenager
- Jarryd Roughead kicked four goals in a game for the first time
- Jordan Lewis had multiple 30-possession games
- Shane Crawford has demonstrated that he is back to his athletic best
- Hodge and Mitchell continue to become elite AFL players
- Grant Birchall looks like he will become a gun footballer

Hmmmmm..... A bit proactive. Overated or fat? I just think that in an interesting way to start a thread about someone you say you appreciate.

We know he isn't in fantastic condition. Russell said he basically did no fitness work before coming to the hawks, and only trained once a week for his TAC club when he played for them before getting drafted. It'll take probablay 3-5 Pres-seasons to get him conditioned the way we'd like him to for a starting midfielders role.

He's had some ripper games. Not Judd like, but to expect people to do what Judd has done is naive. The amount he gets the ball considering the amount of game time he gets, and the amount he gets in the middle is staggering. He averages as much as an junior per game, I guarantee he'd get benched more than any other as well who have similar stats to him.
I don't think he'll lose his way. He's shown he's got firstly the ability to find the ball (which is most important) then secondly, to be able to use it. Combined with his aggression its only his stamina at the moment holding him back, and a couple of pre-seasons working him hard I'm sure we'll see the same improvement in him that we have with Mitchell.

Hodgey is 22 this year, debuted in 2002 and B & F for 2005. Lewis turned 20 in April, has had potentially a custodial sentence hanging over his head since before we played him, and a lot of media adulation to deal with. Give this lad another 2 years on the scene, he'll have in excess of 60 games under his belt, complete with a lethal delivery into the fwd 50. Our "Tas" could be kickin more goals than Collingwood's version.
