Over the period of the AB Medal decided last night McGrath and Warne had the following stats in Tests (each played 14 Tests):
McGrath 68 wickets at an average of 21.76
Warne 64 wickets at an average of 31.06
In one-day internationals (both played 17):
McGrath 32 wickets at 19.59
Warne 20 wickets at 38.90
Admittedly, Warne scored 99 with the bat in Perth this season which helped his cause, but the above figures would imply that McGrath would be streets ahead of Warne when it came to all aspects of voting.
Yet the final for the Allan Border Medal:
Warne 54 votes (2nd)
McGrath 45 votes (equal 4th)
It's an amazing result but probably shows why Warne has such a lock on his position even though he had a patchy season at best; he is still so highly regarded by his peers.
