View Full Version : My favourite Saint games against each club

These are my favourite memories of games against each of the opposing teams from the decade that was the 90s. They are favourites for different reasons; what it meant to our ladder position, comebacks from seemingly being down and out, individual efforts that brought about the win, even sentimental attachments to times and places.
Rd 7 1991
St Kilda 24.18.162 Adelaide 4.7.31
This was the first game in 1991 that Lockett played after injuring himself in the preseason cup. The Crows were 3-3 after Rd 6 in their first year in the AFL and had come to Moorabbin looking for a win. What they didn't expect was to get blown away in the manner that they were. Lockett had his first shot for goal within 20 seconds, and had 9 at half time, with the Saints 13 goals up at the main break. One of the highlights was watching Danny Hughes get dragged the length of the ground in front of the St Kilda members. This remains St Kilda largest winning margin in any game.

Thanks for that HTBS,
Some great memories there. The games against Carlton and Hawthorn at Moorabbin were sensational.
Just the kind of post to get me into the mood for the upcoming season.

Keep going HTB... 14 clubs to go.
Agree with you on Adelaide... Winmar was great that day too.

that was a good read & as Sainters said there were some good memories there, though far too few live ones for me :(
I noticed a couple of other articles that you've written and think you made a lot of good points about the ex StKilda champion.
I wonder whether your view of the upcoming season may have changed a little in the last 3 months? (Good points about the 2 collisomething games - the timing for both could well be advantageous for us)

great stuff htbs. some other games i can think of was the win in about '82/3ish when garry odgers (greaser) slotted a torp home from the wing to give us our only win at moorabbin for the year and consign the dogs to the wooden spoon, social club went off that night.
in '95 when carlton were having a brilliant season they lost to the swans who were last on the ladder and the following week against us didn't register a goal to a minute before 3/4 time. it was one of those afternoons where we were in hysterics watching the blues supporters sook and moan.
around '92ish we played west coast at waverley. the saints were all over the eagles and were up by about 8 goals at 1/2 time when the hail started leaving the eagles with no chance of a comeback. i was particularly vocal in my abuse against sumich that day and much to my enjoyment he only had 1 kick for the afternoon and it was off the ground and went 40 meters backwards.:D

I remember the last 2 well, I was at both of them. Almost went with the West Coast one in 92, as well as the Hawthorn one the following week (when Lockett kicked his 100th and we gave them a belting), but made late decisions to change them.
For the Carlton one, I was sitting behind a Blue moron who started off slagging Winmar racially and went downhill from there. Needless to say, we got stuck in and gave him plenty as the afternoon wore on. Mil Hanna still has nightmares about Rod Keogh I reckon.
I vaguely remember the 82 one, though I don't think I was there, as I played on Saturdays in those days.
Might have to revise my predictions for the year, but trying to take it one pre season annihilation at a time.:)

that bump from rod keogh on mil hanna is fondly remembered by all who saw it, it is now part of legend. :D the last couple of years we have missed his type of hardness but with hamill, lawrance, cripps, burke, thommo, callahan and baker we now have some players that can provide some real grunt without being knuckleheads like barry hall. and that's grunt with a gr not c, but that as well. if only we could find another lazar vidovic. :D
