RICHIE Vandenberg knows, but does not relish, the fact that Sunday's clash with Geelong just might be his last as captain of the Hawthorn Football Club.

It'll be his last game as captain.
The word going around is Mitchell has the votes from most players for next years captaincy! :thumbsu:

Vanders has alot of leadership qualities, and is probably the best in a leadership aspect but the fact is his football talents arent up to scratch and has deserved to be dropped numerous times this year.
Great to see Mitch get the job! (if he infact gets it)

I think this might be the article you meant to post - so many things about the Hawks today, it's easy to get confused!

That gives you more appreciation for the effort Vanders has put in as captain - and while I believe there are a number of potential leaders, is it not fair that VDB gets some reward for the sacrifices he has made?

Funny you should say that, I recall he led the Hawks to a win, kicking three goals against the Bumbers a couple of weeks ago. How embarrassing.

Provocative title with nothing to bak it up in the text.
Besides Sam Mitchell would be a contender in 2008-2009

Vanders has the dignity and honesty to admit to his own on-field limitations. He deserves respect for that.:thumbsu:

If he can admit that then why can't he admit that he isn't the best candidate for the job?

Vanders has been a good servant of the club.
Last year he was asked to play a different roll and help out the youngsters in the forward line and basically keep an eye out for em. Im sure opposition players would have known 'pop' a youngster & Vanders would get even with em.
This year he's been ok. The game against Carlton should surely rank as one of his best as Captain. His goal I think in the 3rd quarter after the Blues rally was a real Captains goal. Took a strong mark, was in range, on an angle and never looked to pass. Went straight back, stopped and ran in to kick a real Captains goal, one of three for the day. Excellent effort.
Having said that I think father time has caught up a little and a change would be good... but he is a good servant of the club and doesnt deserve the sort of vilification he's received.
