Hey all,

How are all the BF Bulldog legends??

LY, using my 'telepathetic' powers, I heeded your cry for trivia! Here's one to kick off 2002 - a relatively easy question for those who are old enough...

Brad Hardie played his first season at Footscray in 1985 - and promptly won the Brownlow Medal. However, he was plagued by poor form in the first half of that season, prompting Doggie supporters to wonder whether we had blown our cash on a dud! The following year, Brad was featured in a Swan Lager TV commercial, under the theme of 'They said you'd never make it.' What inglorious act of Brad's did this ad. show - taken from the 1985 game where he finally started to come good? Who was this match against, and where was it played????

Vague recollection of the ad but can't picture the Hardie part. So I don't know what the inglorious act was, but it was probably dropping a sitter which let the forward kick an easy goal.

At a guess on the game, I'd say Hawthorn at Princes Park. I have a memory of him being a weak link in the first quarter and then finally showing his worth after that. Maybe it was Matthews kicking 3 early goals on him.

But the memory is dim these days and I don't have access to any reference material at the moment so I could have the game completely wrong. I don't have the same powers of recall as LY and JB. But at least I've got my (probably incorrect) attempt in before one of them gives the meticulously correct answer this time.

As for Hardie, I certainly was one who wondered what value he was early in his career. It took a while before his knack of completely ignoring his man and playing a loose man in defence paid off. But the second half of 85, he was fantastic.

Not a bad try K9. I remember the Hawthorn game quite well. We were something like 50 points down at half time, and came back quite well to lose by a couple of goals. But Hardie's golden patch started just a little later.

PS - it wasn't a spilt mark...on the right track though.

Wasn't it against Carlton at Princess Park, and didn't he have a hanger taken over him by ??? (it'll come to me)

My memory was he was almost BOG in Rd 1 vs Caaaarlton. I remember being very impressed and excited by his debut.
I also remeber the Wagon playing one of his great games , My inlaws are all Carlton fans so I realyy enjoy beating them.

Good to see you back Biscuit.

I am thinking maybe he was dacked too. I think it may have been at Arctic Park against North. We played them there twice that season from memory and won both times.

I used to have a photographic memory of almost the entire 1985 season but a fairly active social life between for about ten years after '86 seemed to wipe a lot of it from recall. I cant remember the order of games but remember we started with a win at Carlton, played Geelong on a stinking hot day at Western Oval and won well, lost a game(?) beat North, beat Essendon at Western Oval, then who knows? I dont even know these ones are right but they all happened in the early part of the '85 season.

BTW I dont know about Hardie playing badly early in season '85 because I had a bet with my boss after round 4 that he would win the Brownlow, I just think that we had never seen a guy play the way he did and didnt know what to make of it.

God I talk a lot of crap sometimes.

Anyway I have a supplementary question.

In the aforementioned Ad. with our Brad drinking a can of Swan Lager, what legal technicality caused the cancelation of the advertising campaign?

Yep, jboyar. Hardie did play well against Caaaaarlton in Round 1, but it sort of tapered off a bit. He was moved to the forward line v Richmond in about Round 7 or 8 and booted 3 goals, which gave us all a lot of heart.

My recollection is that he wasn't 'dacked' (great word !!!). And if he was, would he have waved his shorts at the coaches box??

Yeah LY, so you talk crap? What are your bad points :D ? Wouldn't have a clue about the legal technicality. Something to do with an American corporation using the name Swan? (like when Sherbet had to change their name to The Sherbs. What a bloody disgrace  )
