View Full Version : the thing about music today...

At the risk of being accused of being an old fuddy-duddy (I am 36, after all), the thing that bugs me when I occasionally look at "Video Hits" is that artists these days seem to market themselves on the basis of HOW THEY LOOK- are their clothes "cool", does their hair look trendy etc etc. I always thought music is supposed to come from the heart, that it expresses human emotion. Give me REAL music made by PEOPLE not machines any day. I know there are a lot of BF ites with pretty good taste in music though. What modern music do I like? Foo Fighters, Everclear and Garbage are pretty good.
i agree with u. Most modern rock is going down quickly. Most of the bands i like are from the mid 90's and out of the bands that have appeared in the last 2-3 years, a large percentage dont give me enjoyment. The only newish bands i love are Incubus (all time favourite band)and Sevendust, with a few more i like, but a lot of the stuff like Blink 182, Limp Bizkit, Creed, Nickelback etc just isnt up to the standard it should be in the year 2002. I'd prefer Nirvana, Live, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Metallica to those mentioned any day.
Don't worry about it. It just appears like that's all music is about and that that's all there is going around because you're probably limiting yourself to commercial Top 40 shows. Fact is it was around before the Beatles and will be around forevermore.
Top 40 music is like McDonalds, it looks colourful, makes the owners a sh*tload of money, but it ain't got no taste!!
Electronic music if done properly can have plenty of artistic integrity, so I wouldn't blame the machines. Nearly all rock is electronic music anyway!
The demographic that Top 40 caters to is to teenage girls, so you wouldn't expect them to be wanting anything than light bubble-gum pop anyway.
My favourite modern-day band is Radiohead. Their music comes right from the soul. Some may say too depressing, but I just reckon you have to listen to 'em for a while longer to get where they're coming from!

I've started to feel a bit of a fuddy-duddy. Hell, I would have qualified when I was 16. My favourite bands were (and still are) from the 60s and 70s: Iggy Pop and the Stooges, Blue Oyster Cult, MC5, Alice Cooper, the Ramones, the Saints, the Who, Black Sabbath, the Dictators, the Rolling Stones, the New York Dolls,
Most of the current bands I like were influenced by these bands and do not receive mainstream coverage

I haven't watched music videos for about 6 years. If you want to find good music, you can find all sorts of **** over the net...and listen to samples of it at places like www.cdnow.com
Good site, lots of more obscure stuff there.

Mutual admiration society building here - you legend Rusty!
In my office we have the radio tuned to CRAPFM, which plays top 40 all day. There's one old bloke (62) who always cracks me up with his call of 'More bloody darky music". The more I watch rage on a Saturday morning, by geez, the more I realise there is a helluva lot of 'darky music' around.

There is a solution to all this. Dont listen to the radio, or watch video hits.
I only watch Rage for the 45 minutes they play hard rock/metal on friday nights....and only if they have a good guest programmer on Saturday. I watch Channel V only if they have a good special on and for Heavy Shift.
I havent listened to the radio voluntarily (by that i mean i listened to it at work just because it was on) for about 4 years...other than Power Surge and Three Hours of Power sometimes.
All daytime radio is basically crap...its a waste of time listening to it unless you wanna hear the same songs day after day at exactly the same time/
To find new music i read magazines like Metal Hammer, Revolver, sometimes Kerrang as well.

Get 'Terrorizer' - occasionally a bit hit & miss (esp. this month:mad: ), but generally a great read for those of us into the heavy stuff.
Kerrang is a joke - yes, I see the irony in my sig!;)
What about the legendary 'Hot Metal' - hahaha :p ;)

Yeah Terrorizor is another i buy on and off. Metal Edge is pretty cool at times too
Ah yes Hot Metal... if there was an album coming out, or a tour approaching, HM would find some way to f--- up the dates, venues, names of support acts, etc etc
Problem with most metal magazines these days is that they also try to cater to broader audiences. I mean, even as far back as the 1992 issues I have, Metal Hammer was reviewing albums by Mick Jagger and The Spin Doctors, and later HM featured Alanis Morrisette and Silverchair...
During the 80s, Kerrang even had Phil Collins and Dire Straits on front covers...

cant say i remember Hot Metal. Might of been before my time.
Metal Hammer is my favourite...i got about 25 issues of it...i think its great. Good articles, and good reviews, its basically where i choose new bands from...from articles and reviews in there.
There is some real trash metal magazines out there. Id have to say Hit Parader is the worst. Everytime i flick thru the new ones at a newsagent its basically the same magazine every month. Always has Korn, Limp Bizkit, Rammstein, Sevendust, Coal Chamber, Dope, Powerman 5000 and Slipknot and a 'long live kurt' articles. It never changes. And if you read the articles, its basically the same articles every month. Last one i read, in the Korn part it still mentioned Issues as their 'just released cd'

Yes, Garbage do plenty of electronic doodling admittedly, but they also write damn catchy songs. But you're querying Everclear? they're just good solid guitar rock!! (also the Superjesus are pretty tidy)
