View Full Version : Past four rising stars
Mitchell Madness

The past four years has seen the AFL launch some big names into the spotlight. Based on thier RISING STAR YEAR which of the four players listed do you think had the best debut season?
Without sounding bias, i believe Mitchell just has the edge over Pearce, only because Mitchell managed to finish in the top 5 for disposals when he won the award, and finished first in the league in clearances. Pearce will be an awesome player, but his stellar debut season really doesnt match up.
Deledio really was average last year, but his pace and profile as the number draft pick upped his worth a lot.
Rivers is a very hard-at-it player, but is by no means a match winner, but rather the type of player to put in the extra 10% with no ambition but that to help his team.

based on rising star year ALONE, i have to go rivers. he revitalised our whole backline with youthful exictement, and did great shutdown roles.

Easily Rivers
Midfielders are a dime a dozen
Rivers held down Centre Half Back in his rookie year, and had to cover for all of Nicholsons mistakes as well
Rivers is a star
Picked Mitchell before reading the post. Mitchell is the better player now, would love him at Melbourne. River's debut year was better though and Rivers is undoubtedly the best young CHB in the game.

Deledio by a mile, was eventually being tagged in his debut season.
Played International Rules, 3rd in Richmonds Goal Kicking, picked up a HUGE amount of stats and was probably unlucky not to be selected in the AA side.

No bias I see?
Rives for mine. Much tougher than the rest and has played his role better than the rest. One of the best young KP defenders IMO.

That is the closest poll I've ever seen.

I went for Lids.
He was so good that in any of those other years listed, I reckon Griffen would have won the award for the season he had.
Very exciting future.

Mitchell - He was a man-beast that first year.

Rivers only got the award because Davey injured himself in the last few games.
Not saying Rivers didn't deserve it but he wasn't the best overall that season.
My pick is Deledio but I didn't really see much of any other players on that list.
In order based on what I did see of the players it would be:
Brett Deledio.
Danyle Pearce.
Sam Mitchell.
Jarad Rivers.

Rivers' impact in his first year was amazing. Not sure where he came in our B&F but holding down CHB brilliantly and shoring up the rest of our defence he was brilliant.

No Rivers won it by a mile, and he held down CHB getting beaten only a few times for the whole year, was much better than any of the others

Leds by a landslide! He is exceptionally quick, great skills and the most talented of the top 4. He performs in crunch games and lifts his team with amazing individual feats. Rivers is alright, beats some oppenents but plays loose quite often. Then you have Pearce and Mitchell. Mitchell is a tough nut and a clearance king, Pearce is quick and outstanding skills but soft.
Leds just over Mitchell in their years. Mitchell was from Box Hill had some VFL experience and Leds was just unbelievable in his games.

Deledio only got the award because McLean injured himself midway through the year. McLean was an almost unbackable favourite to take the Rising Star when he got injured.
Rivers was a unanimous choice for a reason, the only slight competition he had for the award was Davey - and even Davey was nowhere near Rivers that year.
Rivers had the most dominant RS year I can remember, there was no discussion of any other player that would win it that year, he just didn't back it up the following year.
