My son is a total football nut and haunts a place called CARD ZONE opposite Vic. Market. This has cards going back to the 19th century and of course all those really dodgy ones from the early 1970's.
Theres one card of a player whose name escapes me, the outfit was made up of pale blue , maroon with white monogram and hooped blue and maroon socks.
I can't ever remember the team with that gear but there were MANY changes when colour TV came in. I can actually buy the card.
I just put it down to bad acid.

I believe us Roy Boys also wore hooped socks in 1974 for one season.
Maroon/Blue/Gold in line with color TV. Didn't last though, they were shockers....
Can anyone confirm this?
I seem to remember something about this.
I think it was in 1975, and they didn't wear them for the whole season.
They did wear gold shorts though.
Same period the Doggies wore Red shorts & hooped socks to (and then red socks with Blue shorts, but not 100% on this one)
All done for colour TV...
I have a picture of someone floating around with the white monogram too, not sure who it is, but will have to dig it out and have a look!!
Richmond also wore yellow shorts for at least part of 1975, and Essendon wore red shorts until at least 1980.
Good look that!!
Yeah, theres a colour piccy of Muzza in '69 (I suppose) with a white monogram. I seem to remember that we went from royal blue/deep maroon to a red/light maroon colour scheme when colour tv started 'cos the old colours were too drab for colour tv!!
Levo will know.:)

My son informs me that the player in question with the hooped socks was none other than Laurie Richards, a dynamic half forward ( apparently ).
Again, bad acid is my only defence.

Laurie Richards was a very good player for the Roys in the early 1970's. He was a sensational mark. He was from WA, but represented Victoria in 1973.
He is also a top bloke & took my wife & I on a tour of Perth last time I was there, including visits to ex-Royboys, Ian McCulloch & John Duckworth, then back to Laurie's to look through his scrapbooks & other memorabilia.
The photo on that card was taken at training at the Junction Oval. I think they were just socks he used for training, rather than part of the official uniform.

Is this the answer to the mystery - were they just Laurie's socks or were they some component of an official strip ?
This has now got my son intrigued - as in where can I get those socks ?
BTW, he's also got two cards - one featuring P.Rowe when he was playing for Northcote (!) , who totally unknown to us was Fitzroy's coach for 1 year in the 1930's after playing for Collingwood, ( also suggesting that you buy Hoadleys Voilet Nut Bars at 3d each ... he initially thought the card was a 3D picture ), and the other the Fitzroy Flag , a basic all maroon sponsored by Capstan Cigarettes, on the back of which is RULE 14 which describes the umpires' dutied.
"The controlling body shall appoint for each match a field umpire, who shall have full control of the play, and shall inflict penalties in accordance with the laws. In case of doubt, and in scrimmages, he shall bounce the ball wher the occurance took place."
Sounds easy.

Ah, one of my footy passions is football club's colours and strips.
Due to colour television, most clubs changed their look in one way or another. Prior to 1975, all clubs wore black shorts at home and white away, but it being the 70's and all, colour changed all that. From what I can find, Fitzroy's look changed more than most in this era. In chronological form (and I stand to be corrected):
1974 - Fitzroy FFC monogram changed from white to yellow. Traditional socks of maroon with blue tops changed to maroon, blue and gold hoops.
1975 - Fitzroy changed it's deep maroon to light maroon. Black shorts for home games changed to gold. Socks changed back to maroon with blue tops.
1976 - Gold shorts changed to blue
For interests sakes, other clubs that changed their look for television were:
Essendon - Red shorts for home games from 1975-1982.
Footscray - Red socks and hooped socks from 1975-1978
Melbourne - Royal Blue jumper from 1975-1986
North Melbourne - Changed from hooped socks to Royal Blue socks in 1975.
Richmond - Wore Yellow shorts for one game in 1975 (versus Nth Melb at Arden Street). Tommy Hafey put a stop to it, stating we're Tigers, not Canaries. (Note: FR is a Norwich City supporter and takes great offence at any disparaging remarks about Canaries)
South Melb - Changed from hooped socks to Red socks in 1975.
If anyone knows of any other changes, I'd be happy to know!
Cheers,
FitzroyRamone

Uniforms worn on footy cards can be misleading.
I have a card, with Kevin O'Keefe in his Fitzroy jumper & black socks. I've also seen a couple for other clubs, where the players appear to be wearing jeans, but the photos don't show their full legs.
Teams were not always as particular as they are now about what players wear to training.

1997 - Port started playing in teal socks :o :o     :)

Another uniform change I can think of were Hawthorn changing their jumper to an all gold back in 1975(instead of stripes).

This may explain their poor form on occasions.
Thank you FR, I can now placate my son with this wealth of information.
Everyone must remeber that the photos taken of the players for the footy cards were done at the start of the season before the first game.
if you care to look back you'll frind 9 or 10 of the players pictured were known players with some reputation (excluding 94-96) the others were up and comers. Not all players had a full kit when the photos were taken hence the odd socks or previous years jumpers etc.
