View Full Version : Garry Lyon for Coach?

If there was ever a time for Garry Lyon to finally enter the AFL coaching ranks it would be now. Most rookie coaches have to start with a crap list and this list certainly is not crap. What are St Kilda fans thoughts on this?? Would you want him?? Is there someone better out there for the job?? I like the idea and think Lyon would be great. I can't see the point in getting a rookie coach at this point in time to be honest but I like the fit of Lyon and the Saints!
Thoughts??

St Kilda, having just made the finals but been disappointingly eliminated by Melbourne, hire unproven former player turned tv star/commentator as senior coach.
Sound familiar?
Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat mistakes.
If I were Rod Butterss, I would go to Lethal and say "here's a chequebook, write your own price". He has a proven record with underachieving talent.

I'm assuming your talking about Watson and I dont think you can compare the 2. Lyon has far more experience and has been out of the game longer and had a greater chance to view from the outside. I think you would definately bring him in to see what he has to say!

:thumbsu: And we all thought it couldn't get any more laughable at St K! Go for it guys!:D
I think alot will agree that when gary lyon decides to start coaching he will be a very good coach, BUT
i would want a coach who had experience, number 1 target should be Mark Harvey.

You must be kidding. Yes, it does sound familiar....

Lyon coaching? Only if the media gig fell over. His only attempt at coaching was 1 season at Melbourne in a half hearted effort as a "specialist" coach and the Irish thing - which in all honesty involves coaching professionals against amateurs in a game that no one actually plays.
Not a lot of credentials to go on, apart from a reputation that his media career has helped to perpetuate.

The only positive that could come out of Lyon coaching would be that one would no longer have to hear his ridiculous comments on the radio. I am not sure I want the Saints to fall on its sword to perform this community service.
I do not rate International Rules as coaching cudos. As for throwing money at coaches to tempt them onboard, we have surely learnt that is not the way forward.
Lyon = Watson
Matthews = Blight
Good news regarding Sheldon if he comes in as an overseer - that can only be good.

The way Archie Fraser was speaking about Sydney would indicate John Longmire is a shoe-in. He said they are the bench-mark and we need someone who can do what they're doing, so Longmire definately fits the bill.
BTW, the only person other than Longmire that has a chance (IMO) is McKenna. He was the only other Fraser mentioned (apart from Matthews who we'd like but he won't come).
While there seem to only be two in consideration atm, there would still be a few thousand ahead of Lyon.

You might be reading a bit too much into his comments MSG.
Once they interview the players next week we'll know a bit more.
Fraser might be the CEO but I'm confident that the process will be far more transparent this time. We have a combination of St Kilda and non-St Kilda people on the sub-committee and you'd like to think they haven't narrowed it down to a couple of people already.
We can't afford to get this decision wrong.
On Garry Lyon, it's a big no from me as well. It has to be an experienced senior coach or an assistant coach that has been in the system for a handful of years.

You guys might also want to also consider looking at Roy Laird from Central Districts. Three premierships in three years tells you that he would be definately worth a punt. His proven coaching methods & tactics win finals & Centrals are by far the best drilled team in the SANFL.

I've never heard of him. :o
I really can't see the club taking the punt on a little known identity. That's not to say he hasn't done a great job or isn't a good coach. This is just a crucial decision and that would be too big a risk.

why is their a perception that good players make good coaches????

Now that the Crows are out of the finals, no doubt the Sainters will make another attempt at snaffling Don Pyke. I think either he, or Guy Mckenna, would be your best bet.
Longmire seems the pick of them to me.

Got to agree with you on Lyon.
An arrogant pig to tell them them how it is and how he sees it.
He would get the likes of Gardiner (providing we recruit him) and straighten him out and send anyone who did not deserve to be there packing.
Gary Lyon for Saints.

If they go for Lyon htey are crazy, then again, Tim Watson didnt do much wrong, got a list on the end of its life span.

Just so long as its only a one year deal. He's coming home in 2008 thanks. ;)

Lyon rules himself out of Saints job (http://www.theage.com.au/news/Sport/Lyon-rules-himself-out-of-Saints-job/2006/10/03/1159641319849.html)
October 3, 2006 - 7:04PM
Former Melbourne champion and current media star Garry Lyon today ruled himself out of the running for the vacant St Kilda coaching job.
Saints president Rod Butterss said Lyon's management had contacted the club to inform them of his decision.
"We heard from Garry's management today that he's very much about continuing a media career and that he has declined our invitation to come under consideration," Butterss told the Seven Network.
Lyon co-hosts the Nine Network's Footy Show and is a special commentator on the network's AFL coverage, although Nine's right to broadcast matches ended in 2006, with the Seven and Ten networks owning the rights for the next five seasons.
Lyon is also part of Melbourne radio station 3AW's football coverage.
Sydney assistant coach John Longmire is believed to be the frontrunner to be appointed Saints coach.
Saints assistant Matt Rendell, Collingwood assistant Guy McKenna and Western Bulldogs assistant Chris Bond are all expected to be interviewed in the next few days.
A final decision is not expected this week with Butterss saying the club was likely to enter next week's trading period without a senior coach in place.

So it is Gary on the radio still. Can't he get a job as a CEO of some poor company somewhere?
