In 2001 we pricked up Shane Harvey at 18 after him went Matt Maguire and Jason Gram we also got Simon OÕKeefe at 34 after him went Sam Mitchell my point is that 2001 we picked duds that got delisted after 2 years but the people mentioned after them are still playing.

In retrospect, it is easy to say that we made big mistakes, and we did make mistakes looking back.
I bet that at the time, they were perceived as the better players.

You could go through every draft and pick holes in every clubs choices.
We could have done better, yes, but i also think we have identified we need to committ more resources, so i am confident we will improve in future

Its OK to have 1 bad year at the draft every now and again.
Our problem is that we had THREE shocking years in a row.
1999, 2000, 2001 we unearthed a total of 3 players: Welsh, Hille and Rioli (through the rookie draft) who is now gone.
We were always going to end up in the bottom 4 after that insipid effort.

well if you want to use hindsight and pick you could be here forever, and not just having a go at our club. Eg 1995 pick 1 Clive waterhouse. 3. Brendon Fewster. 15. essendon - darren wheildon. 19. st.kilda barry hall. Every club can write a list of what they should have done, who bloody cares!
Nobody doubts the 2000 and 2001 drafts were horrible, but our first pick in 1999 was 40 and we got Hille with that pick. He'd easily be amongst the top 10 players (if not top 5) selected in that draft. We also got Barnes who was exellent in the ruck in 2000. Overall, despite being limited, we couldn't call that draft a failure.
In 2000 we overlooked the likes of Daniel Kerr, Kane Cornes, Richard Hadley, and Mark Coughlan who went between picks 18 and 25. Any of these, including the chronically injured Hadley and Coughlan would've obviously been a better choice than James Davies.
In 2001 Jason Gram, Matt Maguire, Mark Seaby, Steve Johnson and Steven Armstrong were selected between picks 19 and 25....we got Shane Harvey at 18. Maguire is a good CHB, something we don't have right now. Gram and Armstrong have both had breakthrough years (at clubs that didn't draft them). Steven Johnson is good, but inconsistent. Seaby is still developing, but shows good signs in the ruck. Harvey was a deadset rat and not worthy of our club.
We stuffed up badly with these 2 picks. Had we picked Kerr and Maguire instead, we'd have the jet midfielder and key defender we currently lack and I'm sure some people still wouldn't be satisfied.
Despite these 2 stuff ups, our recruiting has been pretty good. L-Murray and Lovett are 23, so I'm guessing they would've nominated for 2000 or 2001 draft. We also picked up McPhee via trade (giving up Caracella due to salary cap probs). So despite not doing well in the drafts themselves, we were still able to recruit very good players from those drafts, only a little later on.
Adelaide didn't do too well in 2001 draft either, but selected Hentshell in the psd and Rutten, Mattner and Bock in the rookie draft that year. All those players turned out way better than some of the guys selected in the so-called super draft.
Drafting is only part of the recruiting picture. Our trading and use of the rookie system has been excellent. And while our drafting could've been better, it has been far from the worst in the league.

What ever happened to this bloke? Was captain of the footy team at my school and ripped it up, beating players like Luke Ball, Jobe Watson and Ted Richards for the B/F award. [Ball was a year younger though]. Was it injuries, lack of passions or other? Cheers if any one can tell me
