What bands do you like, which aren't that well known, should others have a listen to?

I'll nominate the White Stripes. Saw them live at BDO, and purchased their album White Blood Cells. Top band, who you either love or hate. Unique sounds, with crunchy guitar, and heavy drums by a brother/sister duo who hail from Detroit.

If you want to download some of their songs, try Fell In Love With A Girl, Hotel Yorba, Union Forever, and The Same Boy You've Always Known.

Who do you recommend?

Other People's Children - A Melbourne based band who have released their debut CD, "Fields Of Sadness" on Library Records. Their sound is mainly 80s synth-pop (think Soft Cell, 1982 era New Order), but their best song is the as yet unreleased track, "100 Ways To His Heart".

Club 8 - A Swedish duo who have released 4 CDs, 2 of them ("Club 8" and "Spring Came, Rain Fell") in the last six months. Their "Club 8" CD was one of my three favourites of last year....think of a melancholic Saint Etienne. The recently released "Spring Came, Rain Fell" is a little bit more upbeat.

La Buena Vida - A Spanish group who do these lush, majestic pop songs full of string arrangements....something you can put on the CD player and leave in the background. I don't know the singer's name, but her voice is stunning....really warm and exotic. Their latest release is called "Hallalujah!".

Hmmm.. let me think...

Clouds - finest Aussie band ever, IMHO ;-) Never got the recognition they deserved.

Letters to Cleo - Most would recognise them as the band who played on the roof of the building at the end of Ten Things I Hate About You..

Barenaked Ladies - Massive in the US and Canada, but not much business here. Shame, as I think they are the best live act I've ever seen (Hi Fi Bar in Melb a couple of years ago). Incredible improv artists, and have great songs

K's Choice - Had a hit out here with "Not an Addict" a while back, but no one seems to know their other albums.

Brassy - Cool as hell.

Splendid - Headed up by Angie Hart, formerly of Frente

Moxy Fruvous - Canadian band. Fabulous. All four can sing extremely well, all excellent multi-instrumentalists.

Jimmy Eat World - Jump on the bandwagon now!!! That's all I will say. Bit like Jebediah but much better vocals.

Commissioner Gordon - Hard working Melbourne ska band with hilarious lyrics and great live tunes.

Millencolin - Yes, I know they are pretty big now but their early stuff is awesome as well. One of the best punk bands in the world, and they are yet to sell out as well.

Yeah, that was a nice album.....what's Angie up to these days? Frente were wonderful though.....it's just a shame that the marketing gurus  at the record companies destroyed them.

Dry Kill Logic - in my view the best of the year-2001 nu-metal bands. They arent really any different to the normal roadrunner nu-metal band but their cd is very strong. A lot of very very strong songs on their cd. A definte recommendation

Roni Size - If anyone likes Drum n Bass, th en they will already know that Roni Size is the pinnacle of th at genre. Awesome drum n bass.

CORONER - little known Swiss thrashy type trio. Some of the the scariest muso's I have ever heard. Could never understand why they weren't huge (in that genre anyway!;) )

WATCHTOWER - more awesome muso's - even more complex and spazzed out than Coroner.
(Shame about the singers voice though - yes, I know technically he's awesome, but please enough screeching!)

AT THE GATES - reasonably popular with the heavy 'Swedish sound' crowd, but 'Blinded By Fear' from Slaughter of the Soul ALWAYS amazes in its 'face-rippingness'!;)

I dunno what's popular in Australia but if you can find it, check out Feeder they're a great band from the UK. If you like fast-tempo punk-pop then you'll enjoy this band.

Also Ash, who've been around for a few years and have an excellent album 'Free All Angels'.

Wouldn't call them unknown, but Reel Big Fish and Mustard Plug are certainly underrated bands falling under the punk/ska genre.

Currently rating very highly on the Darkometer are : Children of Bodom, Edguy, Gary Moore, Gamma Ray, Cacophony and Enslaved.

Old favourites, who are very underrated IMHO, are MANOWAR, Sodom and Blind Guardian.

yes, aSh's '1977' is one of my fave albums... havent been a fan of their later albums tho...

the 1977 cd has a real 'treat' at the end of it... a kinda 'easter egg' type thing... if u listen to the very last track... when it finishes, forward for a few mins.... and, you'll get to hear a 4-5 minutes of drunken, swearing, & massive self-induced vomitting session by the boys... hahah.. its hillarious...

A little known band which I like are: Los Rabanes - they're a trio from Panama who have made many songs for the Latin American market but are starting to make a bit in the States. I like them because they play a variety of different genres in the one song, thrashing out the bass one minute then mixing it with melodic chords, with a bit of rap and merengue thrown into the mix. Spiderbait and Regurgitator are probably the two Aussie bands which would probably most resemble them, but still they're fairly different to those two. I don't know if you can get their CDs out here but www.audiogalaxy.com have their stuff.

Another Spanish speaking band I like are Heroes del Silencio - they thump out good rock tunes.

A band called Stoic are really good. They are all me mates up here in Sydney. Heard them for the first time last week at our school assembly and their awesome.

They mainly do covers and stuff like that, but they have about half a dozen original songs. They're really talented, i don't know how they'll go in the future, but hope they make it to some sought of succesful level (even if it is only minor) cause they are really good.

Since Brett stole the White Stripes ;) I'll say The Get Up Kids. An American emo punk band, not bad for some emotional music. Download Action & Action, Forgive and Forget, Don't Hate Me and Ten Minutes. Coming Clean and Holiday are about their heaviest stuff (which isn't that heavy!). The singing isn't top notch but I can't help but love them.

Augie March are a hugely unrecognised band - if a talent to popularity ratio is to be a measure.

The Screaming Trees were a fantastic band during the grunge era, yet never became major news. Definitely worth a listen, if you like alternative rock, and have outlistened the usual suspects (definitely better than anything new on that scene, at the moment).

Likewise, a lot of early R.E.M. stuff is also fantastic, yet, often overlooked.

Sorry GH, but I think Millencollin are huge sellouts. Once they wrote songs with high energy asnd frenetic riffs which were catchy and fun........now they write catchy riffs for the ,asses and seem to have lost their real energy. Plus, anyband that is able to spend over $1 mill on a video is, in my opinion, a sell out to major multi-national labels.

The Celibate Rifles: Check em out at http://celibaterifles.com. There last album has been in my cd player since it was released 18 months ago. Brilliant back catalogue as well. Can't rave enough about em.

The Monarchs: If you like the Hoodoo Gurus you will love the Monarchs. Features ex guru Brad Sheperd. Rock and Roll at its best. Heard they deliver live as well.

Richard Clapton : Thats Richard - not Eric. Fantastic songwriter who deserves better in terms of airplay etc. Check out his best of compilation.

There last two CD's are very difficult to get in Australia, but if you like the Prodigy, then you may like CURVE.

Most people I know who have listened to their 1997 CD "Come Clean" have been very impressed, and their earlier CD's, "Doppeldanger" and "Cuckoo" are very well regarded.

They are a little darker and less comercial than the Prodigy, and some they are an aquired taste, but if you like having your ears assulted by an ango b***h this could be the band for you.

IMHO Resin Dogs are too underrated. The atmosphere they create live is just funky - you cant help but groove away with it. I suppose their prob is that it's impossible to recreate "atmosphere" on a recording.

But perhaps they're happy that way - afterall isnt playing live what true music is about!

Yeah, I've got a couple of their records....Laid is probably their best one. It's just amazing that James have been around since the early 80s...their early records sounded like Joy Division (as did every other band that was on Factory Records at the time). In the end though, James were a great band when it came to releasing singles, but their albums often had way too much filler songs.

.......since going to Byron Bay for the last 2 Blues & Roots Festival the Blues choices have got better......it was amazing to see so many good local acts.........besides Ben Harper last year my faves were all locals..........especially the jam sessions with Chris Wilson, Jeff Lang, Dom Turner, Backsliders and a few others........just plenty of good Aussie Blues........

As for the 70's.....would have been great to have seen some of those bands live at their peak - I keep telling people I was porn 10-15 years too late.....I was only 9 when I saw KISS in 1976 at Adelaide Oval.......Gene Simmons face paint and all........ :D

some people say I have a strange collection but I just love good music no matter the type......except for maybe rap, dance and most Top 40 singles.......:D

Ihnavent been in Aussie for a year and a half nobutin over here (England) Ive just bought an album by a Swedish band called The Hives. New punk with a touch of seventies. Hard to explain but loud and energetic.
