Interesting question posed on SA Footy regarding Hentschel's injury.

We all know you can elevate a rookie during the season if one of your players gets placed on the "Long Term Injury List".

Are we allowed to chuck a rookie on our full list next year even though Hentschel injured himself this year? Does the injury have to happen the same year a rookie gets the promotion?

I'm sure an expert here will know the answer.

That's a good question :thumbsu: Surely we'd be able to...

Hentschel is currently on our main list. My understanding is that we will have the right at any time next season to put him on the long term injury list and promote a rookie.

I'm sure that the club will take this account when determining their number of draft picks as it virtually gives an extra one but with 4 options.

Thanks macca. I would have thought it would all be ok, but you never know with football these days.

So i gather we will put Trent on the injury list next season then promote a rookie? Maybe even a rookie we sign up this upcoming off season? I cant think of any of our current batch who stand out at the moment.

If the whispers are right the current crop of rookies will all be gone, which wouldn't surprise me, as IMO only Sugars had some chance of survival.

So it almost certainly would be one of the new rookies if we do decide to promote one. The club will have the luxury of sitting back and watching their progress before making any such decision. :thumbsu:

Yeah i have also heard all our rookies have been told they wont be on the list next season.

That gives the new guys a real chance to get on the full list straight away, that should give them a bit of extra motivation. As you basically said, we shouldnt (and dont have to) rush in to any decision as its not something we desperately have to do, we can see how the young lads perform in the first half of the season before making a decision.

Yes we can promote a rookie next year in place of Hentschel. A long term injury is a long term injury regardless of when it happened.

You mean Dale "I only play one good game per year and struggle when challenged" Ellis?

No thanks.

Same was said about Joel Patfull and look at him under the guidance of Leigh Mathews.

'AFL clubs will be able to draft one mature-age rookie provided the player has never been on an AFL list. The new rule will mean clubs can draft as a rookie a player over 23 from any competition, provided it is affiliated with the AFL.'

So they don't have to be under 23 apparently. Any mobile forward in the SANFL who has never been on an AFL list but could cover for Hensch for a year?

With out getting into an argument, did you read what Boffo wrote? He said “Any mobile forward in the SANFL who has never been on an AFL list but could cover for Hensch for a year”

Maybe a yawn but in the SANFL that the pick of the bunch for forwards IMO and your more than likely correct in assessing that yawn factor to them, but that was the criteria

James Podsiadly? He's been thrown around at draft time quite alot but he hasn't been picked up. He's 24 I think and IIRC is from the same club Ben Hudson was at in the VFL (Werribee). I think if he isn't taken in the ND then we should seriously have a look at rokieing this guy. He's a pretty good contested mark.

Knowing the said rookie is available to play from day 1 is like having another (admittedly low) draft pick in what will be a deep draft, and who can be elevated or dropped at season's end.

The only down side, apart from not having Trent of course, is that we effectively will have only 3 "real" rookies.

Does the new rule include players that have previously been on rookie lists? Or is it just senior list players that are excluded from the mature rookie?

What about Bonnie Doon he played okay in the last few games, maybe he is warranted possibly another year on the rookie list.

Any player who will be MIA for 8 weeks or more can be placed on the long term injury list. Doesn't matter whether or not their injury occurred in the current season. Huddo could have been replaced for most of 2006, Hentschell for most of 2007.

Players can be replaced any time up to and including Round 18 (minimum time to qualify for long term injury list is 8 weeks - hence R18 which is 8 weeks before the end of the season).

Effectively, our first rookie draft selection could be considered to be a free pre-season draft selection.
