HAd an interesting discussion with a mate about players who break team rules should not be played and even traded, regardless of their football ability. The discussion continued on about the kind of rules that players breach and whether they are severe enough to warrant players being delisted/ ontraded etc.
What team rules would warrant the end of a player's career at a club? Here are a few for your consideration.

1.Off field alcohol/drug related fighting/brawling in public.
2.Criminal activity-theft etc.
3.Messing with other players' wives/girlfriends.
4.On field breaches.....letting team-mates down by not shepherding,chasing etc.
5. Playing with an injury when the player reports that he is 100% fit and then breaks down in the first minutes of the game.
6. Lateness for training.
7. Drug abuse.

I know that there are many players playing at other clubs who would break a number of the rules I have listed above but they are excused, often because they have football ability. This engenders disquiet among other players and the team's form suffers because of it.

To maintain a positive culture at a club what would be your most important non-negotiable team rules when considering trading / recruiting players to/from a club.

I guess I am also asking your opinion because we will have 6-8 players who are out injured and will be desperate to play in a Prelim and maybe Grand Final this year. What would you think if they told coach and medicos that they were fit and ready to go, only to see in the first 5 minutes of a game that they are underdone and the team is playing 1 player short?
Any thoughts?

Rod Jameson put his hand up to play in the 97 grand final despite hamstring tightness then broke down in the first quarter. Apparently Blight was absolutely ropeable. I can't remember but I don't think Jamo played much after that before retiring a couple of seasons later.

As for No. 3 there have been plenty of rumours involving Bickley/Rehn/Modra but I don't know if any are true or not. Angwin our best example of No. 2.

5. Playing with an injury when the player reports that he is 100% fit and then breaks down in the first minutes of the game.

If a player can mask an injury like Jamo's then the coaching and medical staff are lax in thier (on the track) assessment if you ask me...

Which is why I stated that Burton should be told by Craig .."Go out and try and tear the hamstring off the bone at training this week!" If you cant you can play"...I mean seriously, an astute eye should be able to pick up whether or not a player is injury free after watching him progress through a hundred odd traing sessions a year:rolleyes:

BS.
Those sort of things are managed in every club all the time.
Only a few ever become public knowlage, and even fewer get the chop.

1.Off field alcohol/drug related fighting/brawling in public. Last years off season ''private party'' would see us about 6 players less and 1 Brownlow chance. I think it is an issue that needs to be monitored and any repeat behaviour would be frowned upon

2.Criminal activity-theft etc.The courts will decide if the player will be available :p but it would/could end a players career at the club

3.Messing with other players' wives/girlfriends.It happens...just not as loud as Carey and co

4.On field breaches.....letting team-mates down by not shepherding, chasing etc.No need for this to be looked at
5. Playing with an injury when the player reports that he is 100% fit and then breaks down in the first minutes of the game. The medical dept have the last word...and if the player passes specific fitness tests then so be it

6. Lateness for training. Not sackable but reasons and fines will be given
7. Drug abuse.Level of? The AFL has policies in place that deal with this

I posted this last year because I had heard a rumour that a player was "in the poo" and would never play for the Crows again for breaking a rule. My mates gave me heaps when the player did play again, even though for a few games.
