Wawa, I'll be back
Carly Crawford and Fiona Byrne
NAOMI Robson is determined to continue her quest to free a West Papuan child from his tribe of cannibals.
Robson, ordered out of the province by Indonesian officers, is considering new strategies to rescue Wawa, who his tribe believes is a witch.
"When it is there in your face and someone is asking you to help, it is hard to say, 'No'," Robson said yesterday of the six-year-old orphan.
"I would do it again, but I would do it responsibly, with the imprimatur of the Indonesians and with appropriate documentation."
Robson, host of Today Tonight, said she did not regret the mission, aborted because of incorrect visa information.
"I don't have any regrets. Absolutely not. No, no, no," she said.
"I am just terribly disappointed we were not able to go in there (to Wawa's home) and speak to the people . . . at least investigate the story to determine what is the truth and what isn't."
She said the story had affected her more than most.
Robson and her crew arrived yesterday from Singapore, saying they had not been deported.
Like past crews, they had used tourist, not work visas, she said.
"The wonderful thing is I got a call from the Australian Embassy last night (Friday) saying you have not been deported, that you are welcome back," she said.
Robson said an Indonesian police official had given her the information required should they wish to return.
She had grave fears for Wawa's wellbeing, but said Today Tonight had not planned to take the boy out of Indonesia.
"We were moving (him) to an area where he would be safe and (would be) repatriated by people who had done this with other young children," she said.
"Cornelius (her crew's guide), he has repatriated one of these little boys who was under the same threat."
Another boy also considered to be a Kakua -- male witch -- and marked for death, was brought out by another of Cornelius's staff.
Robson said she hoped some good would come of the media storm.
"It has highlighted the plight of these children," she said.
