View Full Version : List Management

Kildonan
18 Sep 2006, 03:04
Andrew Thompson said on SEN that the list management has been given to Jason Cripps and Matt Rendell and they will continue on with the process until the new coach is appointed.

The process to appoint a new coach will take up to 6 weeks which could bring the appointment pretty close to trade week and draft time.

As reported before Thompson wants to continue and has indicated so to the club but has to wait and see if the new coach wants to keep him or not.

that about says it all. what improvements have their been for the ages 18-20 year olds

appears very little!!

one problem that had not been looked into

another problem recruits in the the last 2 years

St Kilda has deliberately targetted bringing together as many recruits from around the 2001 - 2003 drafts and developed them together to form a closely knit group of players around the same age.

Last year they returned to the youth policy, but like many of the previous years, have tried to minimalise the player turnover. Stability of the playing group seems to have been paramount - giving the players a greater sense of security and increasing their sense of team.

In order to do this we have sacrificed somewhat the influx of youth, but not dangerously so. This is because the team is quite skewed in age towards youth. We lack the numbers of 25 - 28 year olds that most teams have - which forms the core players around which a premiership tilt is predicated.

This group contains established players; Nick Dal Santo, Luke Ball, Matthew Maguire, Brendan Goddard.
Fringe players like Leigh Fisher, Jason Gram, Matthew Ferguson, Raph Clarke, Andrew McQualter, Jimmy Gwilt and a number of highly promising developing players.

Our middle tier age group 22 to 24 years age group:

Michael Rix 0 24 08 Jan 1981 200cm 100kg Coburg Ruck
Blake, Jason 74 24 15 Mar 1981 189cm 87kg Beaumaris Ruck Utility

Montagna, Leigh 30 22 02 Nov 1983 178cm 76kg Northern Knights Midfield
Brooks, Barry 7 21 24 Dec 1983 198cm 95kg Grassy Ruck

This group contains most of our rucking stocks in: Michael Rix, Blake, Ackland, Kosi, and Brooks. Around this age most ruckmen start to hit their straps. Rix and Brooks have yet to establish themselves at AFL level. All of the remaining players (with the exceptions of Murray and Schwarze) have established themselves as regular players. The standouts are Nick and Kosi.

Our players at peak performance years 25 - 27yo

Voss, Brett 136 27 22 Feb 1978 181cm 84kg Morningside Defender
Hayes, Lenny 140 25 14 Jan 1980 186cm 85kg Pennant Hills Midfield
Milne, Stephen 97 25 08 Mar 1980 176cm 80kg Dandenong Stingrays Forward
Baker, Steven 114 25 22 May 1980 179cm 83kg Geelong Falcons Midfield

All players are established as "best 22" but there's not many of them.
All would probably walk in to any other team of the league.

Our aging stars 28+yo

Harvey, Robert (V+) 317 34 21 Aug 1971 181cm 84kg Seaford Midfield
Peckett, Justin (V+) 235 33 05 Oct 1972 182cm 84kg Karingal Utility
Thompson, Andrew 194 33 21 Oct 1972 180cm 81kg Old Melburnians Midfield
Gehrig, Fraser 213 29 03 Mar 1976 195cm 104kg Murray Bushrangers Forward
Hudghton, Max 173 29 02 Sep 1976 191cm 92kg Northern Knights Defender
Powell, Stephen 132 29 07 Sep 1976 181cm 84kg Western Jets Midfield
Hamill, Aaron 181 28 20 Aug 1977 184cm 94kg Tuggeranong Forward

This aging group contains a number of our midfielders; Harvey, Peckett, Thompson, and Powell as well as a key forward and a key defender.
Harvey, Peckett and Thompson are amongst the oldest players in the league, yet for different reasons, all are capable of playing a significant role in a premiership tilt. Aaron Hamill is still at the lower age end of this group and is likely to continue with his peak age performance (that we saw glimpses of in 2005).

what about your 18 - 21 year olds little there.

aaron hammill is constantly injured.

the 2 clarks are constantly injured.

then kate out powell, poeckett and thompson should retire but will have to be pushed. not much is left with the midfiled.

the saints dangeroully let thingsslide with their rookie list and young playerws.

no namb rising stars in the last 2 years either.

look at adelaide, west coast, freemantle. much better at recruiting rookies, much better at turning over their list mor regulary.

I would think most our of delistings this season, if there are to be large changes, would be from the 22-24 group. The older guys all held their own this season, except for Hamill who was obviously injured.

No NAB nominations in two years. Well, Raphael Clarke was nominated last year, and remember these things are judged. Both Dal Santo and Maguire missed out on being nominated when both fully deserved to. This year McQualter should have been nominated but wasn't. For some reason we don't get guys nominated, but it isn't for lack of talent. The Doggies didn't have a nominee this year either. (Am willing to be corrected on that)

Remember that we should be able to produce a team like this next year, fitness willing and without adding anyone from another club

HB: Goddard Maguire Gram
C: X Clarke Harvey Dal Santo
HF: Hamill Riewoldt Montagna
F: Milne Gehrig Watts

Now I like Blake, R Clarke & McQualter, yet I couldn't get them in. OK, I have Brooks as the second ruckman and Thommo playing on, but still that is a very good side. Maybe we should just keep our draft picks unless we get an offer we cannot refuse (did see The Godfather for the first time last night) and develop some youngsters.

Leigh Fisher warrants an automatic selection. He provides run and can also take players out of the game. He is only going to improve after a very good year considering he was coming back from two years off.

exactly pol!! fiora is a potential star if the new coach shows faith in him and plays him more than grant did then fiora has massive potential he just needs to know the playing group and coach have confidence in him and then he will become confident himself

On R Clarke over Fiora: Missing Fiora was a genuine case of oversight. I just didn't remember him. He was stiff to get dropped when he did.

However Clarke does have a future. He played little this season and it showed. He played most of 2005 and was rewarded with two finals and a NAB Rising Star nomination in Round 22.

The criticism of Raph has made me think of some St Kilda supporters, and you know who you are, who are continuously overcritical and often vitriolic in their comments about certain players. Both Raphael Clarke and Aaron Fiora fall into the category, along with Stephen Milne, Troy Schwarze, Matt McGough, Brendan Goddard, Xavier Clarke, and now evidently Leigh Fisher.

Leigh Fisher is an automatic selection - he played one bad game all year in Perth against the Dockers, and I thought played pretty well in the final against Melbourne.

I was happy with McGough coming to St Kilda, but my Collingwood mate said to me "Good luck getting the fat s..t to run".

McGough's problem is not inability to run, it is a inability to chase or do anything defensive, coupled with inaccuracy of disposal. In a team where Peckett & Powell are already gone, and possibly Thompson will follow, how McGough is in a position to be delisted is entirely his fault.

However, I do feel that many St Kilda supporters gave up on him too early. He was even getting bagged when collecting 20 disposals in 58 minutes against the Kangaroos, where very few Saints were hitting targets regularly.

#1 - Players like milne, shwarze, and mcgough should be delisted this year. The game has gone past milne and the other two are hacks. Mcgough is a footballer missing athletisum and shwarze is an athlete with no sense of football ability.

#2 - L Fisher should not be regarded as an automatic 22 selection after playing 7 or so games prior to this year. This was the opinion of Stkilda and from a full season he has failed to set my world on fire....i still cringe when he goes for cheast marks.....(this dosnt mean he wont be in the future)

#3 Raph clarke is the same.

#4....mcgough cant run.

To deal with your points in order:

1. The game certainly hasn't passed Milne by. While many may see him as only a crumbing small forward, who are indeed a dying race, I think he has more capabilties than that. For starters he is one of the best 3 or 4 kicks to a lead on the team, and the way we play that is very important. I disagree with your assessment of Schwarze having no football ability, he is one of the best kicks on the team. McGough is a lost case.

2. While Leigh Fisher does drop too many chestmarks (one is too many), he consistenty finds the ball, making is forward opponent accountable, he is tough, solid at 90kg, and will only improve.

3. Clarke is a talent who rarely panics, something you need in the backline. Sometimes he is so calm it hurts him. He looks slow but isn't (like Dal Santo), and his height (188cm?) gives him an extra dimension.

4. McGough will run to get the footy - he won't run to get his man.

so next time you decide that someones spelling is not good enough for you, don't read the message! As you would have no idea whether the person for example had no time to correct their spelling, cannot spell, or any other reason.

1) i think with milne playing up the ground really detriorates our gameplan.
Football head - yes ability - no.
his positioning is second to none.....yet he is too small and not strong enough to win 90% of contests in a position that is vital in one on one

2) you cant base fisher on 7 games......just because he looked tough.

3) raphs calmness dosnt hurt him...it hurts us.....it is just me or does he get unlimited chances to make mistakes....he needs to be treated like everyone else.

4) mcgough cant run.

I thought I heard the reason for getting rid of Thomas was because he didn't get enough out the best list of the AFL.

Now we want to change him and the list!!!

I really can't see many changes needed - besides not realy much time for a new coach to make a difference , so they will stick to the choices already made by the recruitment department who I think have done pretty well until now - considering it is the best list?!?!

Murray has to be gone - bad luck, bad choice - Fiora is a receiver (new terminology a go-to-player or a wide option) maybe lucky, Peckett, Powell, & (probably) Thompsen retired, maybe Raymond or Sweeney, etc have not stepped up - otherwise not too much jiggling.

Why would you change the best list if the goal is to win a premiership in the next couple of years - the Swans haven't blooded (pun intentional) in 2 years, and they look pretty good.

Changing lists willy nilly breaks down the confidence of the players where every one feels vunerable - surely we want to continue to build a solid club where everyone feels the same feeling of success...

Don't want to end up a rabble like Carlton where even the young players are looking for an out;)

First of all - all players drafted in the National Draft get automatic two year contracts, so despite the incredible lack of patience and possible stupidity of some people, we cannot delist Raymond or Sweeney. Maybe we should delist someone we haven't even drafted yet. Hmpff.

I believe Leigh Fisher played 16 games this year, plus 5 in each of 2003 & 2004, equalling 26 games. I don't know why Spinner keeps saying 7 games. I also don't know which 7 games he is referring to.

Good teams need to be together for long periods. Most of Brisbane's core group was together for 5+ years, same at Essendon in 2000, Port Adelaide in 2004 and Sydney now (about to go back-to-back). While some players are clearly not up to AFL standard (Murray, McGough, Ferguson), we shouldn't be making wholesale changes. With Peckett & Powell already retiring, if we delisted only the above three players, I wouldn't be too unhappy. Five new players into the club, either through trades or the draft. If we trade a player for a player that is player number neutral.

that is the most immature comment i have ever heard. how is an 18 yr old taken mid to late in the draft meant to "step it up" in there first year. being realistic its unlikely these guys will have an extended stay and become regular players at stkilda, even though i hope they do. by all reports these two have come along way this season and for them to be geting senior selection within the next few years would be unlikely. u have no idea wat your talking about

Sweeney easily won the goalkicking for Casey this season, despite only playing 13 games as an 18 year old medium forward fresh from local footy, bit early to be calling for his head. Raymond is 15kgs from senior footy but has time on his side, and obviously some ability to be drafted at his curent size.

Agree with you here. How you can consider delisting an 18 or 19 year old after 1 season is beyond me. And from all reports Sweeney was making good progress, consistently kicking 2 or 3 goals in Casey seniors.

Just a few comments:

1) thank you for correcting my spelling...

Apologies.

I sometimes can't help myself. (Maybe it's an obsessive / compulsive trait just surfacing).

I'm old school. Names should have capital letters - is the way I was brought up ... and to skip this gives me the impression of disrespect for that person.

2) Re: Leigh Fisher being an automatic selection.

We are about to sign a new coach. To him nobody is an automatic selection. It is back to earning your spot for everyone. For most of our top players this shouldn't be too hard, but there should be no givens.

3) Mark McGough - I think he has real talent. 20 years ago he would have been a star of the game. He is a ball magnet because he has a football brain, unfortunately he is slow. His lack of speed means that he is under pressure almost immediately upon getting the ball. His disposal suffers from the pressure. He is rarely successful chasing a player down (also because of his speed) and this sometimes results in his failure to try - something that needs to be addressed because referred pressure is often enough to reduce the effectiveness of the opposition's disposal.

What do you do with a player like that? He could be great. As he is, he still gets his hands on the pill more than enough to earn his keep, but his disposal lets him down, lets the team down. Can he learn, like Powell did, to find other ways to be effective? McGough is a lovely size for a midfielder, a similar height to Lenny Hayes. Maybe if he could build his body up to Lenny's size he could use strength where speed fails him. I don't know, I suppose it's up to the new coach.

exactly!

But if your going to draft a guy when this information is readily known...play him when the time comes....dont just let him run in the seconds....

Excuse me gents - I think you put too much in what I wrote not what I meant:o

I didn't mean to name Raymond or Sweeney directly I meant to say "maybe one of the younger "project" players who have not stepped up.

Beveridge does have reputation of picking some left field choices which have to be considered calculated risks - by that criteria obviously some will work and some won't.

I do hope I have gone some way in winning back my maturity and correcting my obvious display of stupidity. :D

That's 36 listed players and 3 rookies.

List Lodgement One - 2pm Tuesday October 31, 2006.
The list can have a maximum of 35 players, Rookie Promotions, Father/Son selections, Retained (second-year) Rookies.

With 39 players (including Rookies), the list must be trimmed by at least 4 more players and could possibly see more trimmed.

Will we keep all our Rookies ?

Who will be delisted to meet these requirements ?

Will you fit Spida in on your veterans list?

I hope not but only having to include half of his wages in our salary cap gives us a significant advantage over most clubs.

Fingers crossed one of the other 14 clubs can pick him up. As far as I'm concerned he's not welcome.

The club would be misrepresenting the fans if they were to offer Peter Everitt a contract. There are too many who recognise him for what he really is.

To enlist Everitt is to take a huge step backwards in club culture, it would also make a mockery of club recruitment policy where anyone listed must be reasonably expected to play at least 100 games for the club.

Even if Everitt were to be recruited, his inclusion would reduce space and flexibility in the cap and threaten more worthwhile player's future salaries.

We all recognise that he is a top ruckman, but he is also a first rate jerk, he was expunged from our club when we probably needed him most. Why would we do that unless he was already considered a lost cause?

Opportunity knocks for Saints
26 September 2006 Herald-Sun
Mark Stevens

Dear Rod, Right now, I can't reveal my identity. I'm still coaching in some capacity in the finals.

But gee, your list is tantalising. How often does an untried coach get this opportunity?

So I'd like to steal a march and give a quick run-down of where I reckon you're at. Don't worry, I'll be calling as soon as we're knocked out.

First, though, some negatives.

As much as the Saints are a top-eight list, your old mate Grant Thomas was right. The group is a little overrated.

The top 10 players are as good as any, but depth is a concern.

They say you're only as good as your bottom six and, at times, you were exposed in that area this year.

I would be doing everything in my power to get the Clarke brothers right over summer. Herbal remedies, witch doctors ... anything.

They are top-10 draft picks, but they are so frustratingly fragile.

Get them on the park for 18-plus games each next year and the upside is massive. They have pace and flair, and that's what you desperately need coming off half-back.

There's been plenty of talk about ruckmen out there, and I agree in some respects. But remember, you have one sitting there in Justin Koschitzke. Don't panic.

If you can't land a ruckman, give big Barry Brooks a crack as well. He looked OK at the Gabba.

I'm not sure where he stands, though. Was the coaching staff just showcasing him for a possible trade when he was plucked from nowhere for Round 22?

I'm prepared to contemplate having a crack at Peter Everitt, but that would be a huge gamble and probably a backward step considering your old mate Thommo has built a good culture at the club. But please under no circumstances give away a first or second-round pick for him.

I also like the look of that John Meesen in Adelaide, maybe it's time for another brave raid across the border. Maybe we can send Fiora and a later pick back home to Adelaide in return.

You ran at Stawell, Rod. You know all about pace. I reckon you need some more of that, too.

Go to the draft and pick up quick kids.

Don't trade away early choices.

It's time to stock up again on talent, but the focus must be fleet-footed midfielders.

Jason Gram is still learning and has a way to go, but he stands out like a beacon. Three more of his ilk would be nice.

At least Leigh Montagna showed significant improvement, too.

Aaron Fiora can run and bounce it. He could be trade bait, but I've got a hunch I can transform him. Not all is lost.

Play Andrew McQualter in Round1 and keep him in the team. He's small, but the kid's tough. The supporters see him as a mini-Harvey. Give them hope.

You don't need to worry about the stars.

I'd be itching to get my hands on a fit Luke Ball ... and Nick Riewoldt's efforts were underrated this year.

Lenny Hayes coming back will ease the pressure on Nick Dal Santo, even if it will be a big ask for Hayes to completely recapture his best in 2007.

God, I hope Maxie Hudghton can keep it up. The guy's a marvel. Stiff not to be All-Australian.

But, with Matt Maguire no certainty to start the year, he needs help.

I've got Luke Penny's number. I'd be happy to give him a try. Reckon you've missed his ability to plonk himself on a ``gorilla'' and do a job.

Love the Fisher boys. No issue there. Leigh will only get better.

Someone capable of playing on dangerous small forwards would be nice though.

Too much is asked of Stevie Baker, who, by the way, would be one of my first picked.

Big Fraser Gehrig is still capable of kicking 60-plus goals.

I'd be finding the best specialist on earth to help out Aaron Hamill.

He wasn't right for the finals, but you are so much better when he is terrorising opponents.

And Rod, I reckon it's time to get Brendon Goddard into more dangerous spots. The guy's ready.

Speak soon.

Yours in confidence, The Phantom Coach

Leigh Fisher is an automatic selection for a number of reasons. Reliable defender, always makes his man accountable and has great skill and football knowledge. Is a good runner and fits in very nicely to the St. Kilda defensive set-up along with namesake Sam. Is only 21 and the team needs to promote these young guns that will definatly be stars in years to come.

Andrew Thompson is one of the Saints favourite sons, he is a hard player, always puts his body first, and has good skills on occasion. But personally, at his age, I believe the Saints would be better off playing younger blokes such as Andrew McQualter and Raphael Clarke. McQualter has a bit of pace and his body will grow and suit to the level of AFL. He needs to be a player we can build with as well as Leigh Montagna to inject pace into the midfield. A young McQualter with 22 games of experiance in '07 with the likes of Hayes, Harvey, Ball, Dal Santo, Milne, Montagna, Fiora and possibly Gram, will be a telling future investment.

Aaron Fiora should definatly stay at the club and should definatly play more games in 2007. He hasn't lived up to #3 pick in the 2000(?) draft, and I'd say he would be the first to admit it. But he may be a late blossom and may absolutley be a player a good coach could turn into a superstar. Give Fiora the chance. Give him the chance to prove he is a star and if it pays off, and in my opinion it just may, all of a sudden the Saints have a dynamic, dangerous, fast and explosive addition to the side. Has great skill and is definatly one of the best left foot kicks in the game.

We need to delist at least 1 more player or even 2. Surely, they are not going to pass pick 59 as Pick 9 and Pick 27 will fill our remaining two spots. Who will it be?

I believe we have fulfilled our list requirements.

34 main list players, 1 second year rookie = 35 players + 2 Veterans (outside list)

The upshot is that we can nominate that Robert Harvey, Max Hudghton and /or Andrew Thompson as veterans.
A maximum of two of these can be named as veterans outside the list.

Our list consists of :
(A) 36 main list players and however many rookies we retain or
(B) 35 main list players and 1 veteran (outside list) and however many rookies we retain or
(C) 34 main list players and 2 veterans (outside list) and however many rookies we retain

We can name just R Harvey outside the list and achieve the 35 player requirement allowing us to draft 3 players in the upcoming draft.

I think we will nominate R Harvey and M Hudghton as veterans outside the list, allowing us to recruit 4 players in the upcoming draft. If we do this we will not have room for a fifth player, nor will we have room for a pre-season draft recruit.

We will take however many rookies we retain this year and add to that to make a total of 4 rookies into next year.

All clubs must take 4 rookies (some clubs can take more)

Four rookies required (http://afl.com.au/default.asp?pg=news&spg=display&articleid=297929)

All AFL clubs will be required to have a minimum of four rookie-listed players on their list from 2007 as part of the AFL's new Next generation - securing the future of Australian football package unveiled on Thursday at Telstra Dome.

Originally 38 players + 3 rookies

After List Lodgement One:
(38 players - 6 delistings/retirements + 2 recruited during trade week) + (3 rookies - 3 delistings)

= 34 players + 0 rookies currently on list

There are several configurations open to us on how we declare our list.

We can declare our veterans either inside or outside the list. If we do declare two veterans outside the list that would give us this configuration:

= 32 players + 2 veterans + 0 rookies

this would mean that we can recruit up to 6 players on the main list and that we must take 4 rookies.

If we declare just one veteran outside the list like so:

= 33 players + 1 veterans + 0 rookies

this configuration would mean that we can recruit up to 5 players on the main list and that we can take 4 or 5 rookies.

If our veterans are kept inside the list we would have:

= 34 players + 0 veterans + 0 rookies

We can recruit up to 4 players on the main list and from 4 to 6 rookies.

Despite having the two oldest players in the league, the Saints list is relatively inexperienced.

We only have 12 players on our list who have played in excess of 100 matches.

We now have 15 players on our list who have played less than 50 matches and 10 players who have played between 50 and 100 matches.

We will probably recruit one more mature aged player and 4 rookies.
It is unlikely that any of these will offer us great experience - so that would make 30 of our 42 players having played less than 100 matches.

Far from the window being closed, our squad isn't quite up to the experience level that would seem a requisite for being serious finals contenders. Our window of opportunity seems likely to aproach in 2008 - 10.

We have to draft for new players to fill exising players' roles about 4 - 5 years in advance of the existing player's retirement.

Looking at the above list - we are well placed for the next decade in most spots - but we need to look at coverring pending retirements of:

Robert Harvey
Andrew Thompson
Fraser Gehrig
Max Hudghton
Aaron Hamill
Brett Voss

These are important players, but not irreplacable.

Fraser Gehrig will be a major loss. His size, speed and strength means that he demands the oppositions best defender. Even without contributing on the field, he has already made it easier for the other forwards by taking the best defender away from them. Without him the structure of the opposition defence is strengthened. Can Fergus Watts demand the same respect? Can Barry Brooks?

Aaron Hamill would also be a major loss. Despite barely getting on the field, Aaron is still highly respected for his fierceness at the ball. He is an inspiration to the other players. He is a defensive forward, and this type of player will become more common in this new era. All forwards will be expected to have a bit of Aaron Hamill in them - tough, hard at the ball, hard at the man with the ball, hard shepperds protecting our ball carriers. Very few players naturally have a game like Aaron's and his leadership in showing how it is done will be invaluable in developing the next generation forwards.

Brett Voss is one of the most courageous players in the league. Only Max Hudghton could be considered superior in this quality. Both players are fantastic examples of putting the team ahead of the individual. Vossy has played a role as small/medium defender, and has also played up forward as an attacking player. Hudghton is the leagues best spoil. His pace is deceptive and he prides himself in making up the ground when others just couldn't make it. He is best served playing against a leading forward, but more than holds his own against tall marking forwards.

A book could be written on Robert Harvey's contribution to the game. He has shown that his class carries through despite his age. His evasive swivel hip, side step, carriage of the ball, his second and third efforts. Superlatives cannot do him justice. No-one can replace him, but we will need to fill the gap he leaves with a similar type.

Thompson is another whose ego has had to take second place, playing roles that benefit the team rather than making himself look good. His tagging and in and under work are invaluable.

Have we recruited to replace these players?
Are the replacements developing to replace them in time?

Time will ultimately show that this has been a great draft for us.
The players we have picked up are first rate and I'm rapt that they redrafted Fergs. He'll prove his quality.

I was disappointed that we cannot draft to fill all 44 list spots.

We will draft at least 4 rookies and will probably take a pre-season draftee, but there was an opportunity in this "superdraft" to possibly take one or two more players. But it appears that we can not avail ourselves of this pick due to salary cap pressures.

Nevertheless we still have some additions to our list to come.

Who will we pick up in the pre-season draft?

I am hoping that we take a key defender type (like Perry).

If we recruit Matthew Clarke (@33yo - must be one season contract) then that suggests to me that RL wants to go all out for a premiership in 2007.

On the surface that is great news.

The added bonus of Clarke is that he may be groomed for a ruck coaching role (another former teammate of RL) and that could also be a good thing.

I have reservations though. I know that RL has come from a club which has made an art form of "alternative recruitment". Rather than recruit youngsters and have them develop through the system, Sydney has recruited ready-made players who were targetted for certain roles. This policy has been in place since before Roos was coach and has seen Sydney in the finals nearly every year for over a decade.

Our own recruiting process (since end 2000) has been successful in making us very competitive (but no cigar) for the last three years. This is a miniscule amount of time at the top compared to Sydney's. After 2000 where we turned over an enormous number of players, traded heavily and drafted the two best youngsters in the land (Roo and Kosi) we then went all out on the youth policy in 2001 and consolidated with recruiting fewer players the following years mainly the best available at our pick but also collecting more of the 2001 era recruits along the way (Brooks, Gram etc.).

The club had accumulated a great number of players around the same age group and kept them together. These kids became men and are now the core group of the club.

The consequence of this is that our subsequent recruiting has been minimal replacement with youth and we were starting to look a little thin on youth coming through. This is also a consequence of success (i.e. later draft picks).

This year we returned to youth (to a greater degree) and had one of the largest turnovers of personnel at the club since 2000 and 2001.

Look at our changes:

Still only three kids, the rest mature aged players. This is the mentality of topping up (which is what we should be doing) rather than rebuilding, but it does leave us somewhat deficient in youth coming through.

Our Youngsters:
Name Games Age Y Date of Birth Height Weight Origin Position
McQualter, Andrew 17 20 10 09 Jun 1986 179cm 79kg Gippsland Power Midfield
Gwilt, James 5 20 10 11 Aug 1986 188cm 88kg Noble Park Utility

David Armitage 0 18 10 16 Jun 1988 183.5cm 80kg Morningside Midfielder

We have the spots available, but it appears as if the salary space is limited.

Rookie selections:

I am a believer in recruiting potential ruckmen and key defenders through the rookie system. Both player types often take a fair while to mature into the role and both areas need addressing.
(They need addressing now to replace Penny and Ackland, and for the future to replace Hudghton and Gardiner)

We would be best served by taking at least two kids as rookies in these roles and maybe we have a few more mature aged rookies to list.

I hope we take at least 5 rookies and invest in our future.
To address the apparent lack of youth coming through.

■St Kilda has been cleared to participate in next week's pre-season draft after the AFL examined the club's total player payments.

St Kilda chief executive Archie Fraser confirmed last night, however, that the Saints were set to draft only one player, and would have a list of 38 with six rookies, instead of 40 with four rookie-list players. Ruckman Matthew Clarke is expected to be their pick.

The Saints could have a list of 40 if Robert Harvey and Max Hudghton were designated as veteran list players, but the club is instead opting to keep the duo "inside" the primary list of 38, a decision that allows it to draft more rookies.
