Interesting now that Border is back selecting that Hayden has been reinstated in the one day squad despite his age and lack of effectiveness in international one day cricket.

To Hayden's credit he has reinvented himself in test cricket as a opener who grinds out the opposition before opening up a bit more later in his innings as opposed to the brute batsmen he used to earlier in his career (admittly he was often batting against pretty poor bowling back then).

But to bring him back into the one day squad when we have exciting young talent who should be getting blooded before the world cup is simply stupid and I can only put it down to some kind of selectors bia's or sentiment (kind of like Martyn getting recalled although that probably had a lot to do with Pointing getting positions for the "boys")

Really why waste games letting Hayden grind in the top order when we could be getting more top order experience into Jacques, Cosgrove, Watson, Haddin etc.. and begin settling on a good combination for the WC (that hopefully doesn't include Katich but that another rant altogether!)

It really makes you wonder sometimes what criteria the selectors use to pick the team and if bia's and outside influences do have much of a role to play in some of these baffling selections.

I think it's a **** move, but he can't be worse than Katich atm. At least Hayden hits fours

I quite look the idea of Watson opening with Gilly. Watson has a very good technique that doesn't really suit him to batting at 6 or 7 where he normally plays. If Watson could hold down the opening position it would give us the flexibility to bring in another bowler or batsmen.

I'd like to see Watson at fourth and give Martyn the ass

His technique's good enough to open but I'd prefer more explosive players up top to maximise the powerplays

Give Hussey a go at opening for a while :thumbsu:

Agree with Martyn, although it sure is nice to be best mates with the captain.

Compare these two batting lineups

Gilchrist
Jacques
Pointing
Watson
Clarke
Symonds
Hussey

Katich/Hayden
Gilchrist
Pointing
Martyn
Clarke
Symonds
Hussey

Now I'm no highly paid selector but I know which side I would prefer

The problem is he is just so damn good at "icing the cake" in the lower order. On the flip side if he was opening he might be making 150+ scores!

I'd like to see Hussey bat at 5 which kind of gives Australia the best of both worlds.

Let's face it, we're going into the World Cup with the latter batting lineup, selectors wouldn't let the first one happen

Your probably right, yet more painful footage of Katich scratching around for a 60 ball 34 while Hussey and co sit in the shed watching the fields spread because we have wasted the first 15 overs with a man who has the one day batting technique of a chook.

Hayden was struggling in one day cricket before they dropped him. Commentators were surprised that he's only scored 5 tons considering he's an opener.
