I believe it is asking a bit much of Hargreave. I believe he showed promising signs.......he was not a first round pick you know!
Polak was widely recognised as the best young key position player in the whole of Australia last year. His physique is that already of a man. Polak has higher credentials so I will not compare the two.
Murph has not played the last 2 intra games so he was a bit underdone. This is the reason he did not get much ground time.
LastCall, I was not happy with the performance but there were positives to draw out of the game.
As I have stated on a previous post, its only February.

As I have stated on a previous post, its only February. I thought Hargo was alright for a first up performance.Murf might as well of stayed home as Plough barely put him on.BTW you 2 should stop the agro. You are 2 of the more knowledgable posters here and it is inevitable we will all have disagreements on these things. Its good to see some healthy debate though and thank god the footys back.;)

well I didn't see the game and had to rely on a blow by blow report from PC so I can't contribute too much to these discussions. I'm pleased to hear the good reports on Bandy, Bowden and Kretiuk. All will have important roles this year. From the reports it seems like Wallace was experimenting with a few players, ie Smith tagging, but I really hope he allows players to settle into positions a lot more. Last year he moved players about all over the place and I'm convinced most of the guys didn't know if they were Arthur or Martha! You can only be so clever. It's ok to have a couple of guys to switch about and rotate but not too many. Pre season is a time you can get away with experimentation but I would like to see players given more of a chance to consolidate and get to know their surrounding team mates playing styles so they gel a bit more.

Desipura,
I did not say anything negative about Hargreave, I lumped him in
category of players that had little influence on the game ( for various reasons) and I made the comparison to Polak who was another first gamer who I believe did have some infulence on
the game.
Nothing critical there, just an observation.
Hargreave is one of a number of players we drafted that the coach intends to rate as senior players and their performance
on any day/night to be rated accordingly.
I think he has some talent that he could add to the senior list
but I wasn't that impressed with his game of Friday night however, that could have something to do with how the coach used him. He deserves his chance over the pre season comp
to press for senior selection just like any other player.
Just because we have a number of younger players on our list I do not believe that this should shield them from observations
that are posted on a forum like BigFooty particularly when it was not a critiscim.

If they do 1 or 2 things in a game that catch my eye ie smother shepherd, run off his man etc, thats enough for me to make an assessment that a player could be of value to the team.
IMO it is asking alot for a 1st gamer to have an influence on a game.
I did not take your assessment of Hargreave as criticism.
New players generally take a while before they influence a game.
I think that too many of us are looking far too hard into the game.
We lost, i hate lossing, (epecially when im reminded by someone that we lost to Freo :D) but i think we're all trying to take too much away from it.
I know there were a few discouraging signs, but there were some good ones.
If we played like that in the home and away season, i'd be worried, but im not really worried because i saw enough to be happy. Especially when the core come back.
The pre-season cup means nothing. Sure i'd be nice to win, but if we don't, no drama's. Look at Essendon. Not one win in the Ansett Cup last year, and they were Grandfinalists!!
Everyone should just relax and think of it as a supporters pre-season too. Warming up the lungs and practising new quips for the big games :D
