Any thoughts on Thurstans' performance at this stage? Pretty hard to see much of his game on TV.

I thought he played well. Got a bit of the ball, defended fairly well....good first game really

Seemd to be able to read the play fairly well and also was prepared to run off which was good.

No fremantle-esque superstar after 2 kicks though.

I was more impressed with Bishops game across the backline, he looked very good against Fletcher.

Seems we do have some key backmen depth after all.

I wonder why no-one on these boards ever pointed that out before.:D

From the possesions we saw on TV he appears to have matured as a player.

I thought Bishop also played a good game as did the entire backline - not that they had a lot of work to do - even the great Coleman Medalists only goal was from a charity free as per normal.

With Basset, Bishop & Thurstans ready to stand up this year I believe our defence is actually getting stronger - unlike that stupid article Kerl's wrote earlier this year.

Although the game appeared scrappy at times I thought we applied relentless pressure all over the ground and as I've mentioned before I believe our strength and flexibility all over the ground this year holds un in good stead.

A great result by the boys - even though we are in the silly season - some of the results over the weekend sure proved it.

I think Thurstans did OK from the opportunities he had ... he took a few good marks. Our backline was great I think and the pressure put on by our midfield was great too. Hardwick was mopping up everything across the halfback line.

Out of the newbies I was most impressed with Michael Stevens.... his determination and commitment was very good, his seemed to use the ball pretty well and he got a fair bit of the ball too. Only concern is there isn't much of him and can easily get brushed aside by stronger opponents.

Cheers

Yeah, it was funny to see him try a hip and shoulder and watch him bounce straight back off his opponent :)

Porthos was the only one that was confident about our backline however I believe the jury is still out as it is very early into the season.

Thurstans played well, seemed to be in the right place at the right time, and didn't back off when given a hard time. A good first game I agree.

Now have a season ticket and thoroughly enjoyed sitting in the "outer" for the first time at a Port game - plenty of atmosphere and more than in the Members grandstand.

Would like to see Shaun Burgoyne and Goo play next week.

I saw this frustrating news on the realfooty.com.au site:

PORT ADELAIDE v FREMANTLE,

FOOTBALL PARK, SATURDAY

Scott Bassett and Paul Koulouriotis will be unavailable for four to six weeks after receiving injuries at training. Bassett fractured a wrist last week, then Koulouriotis had a recurrence of a hamstring strain. Tall defender Bassett has had a frustrating run with injuries and has played only 10 premiership season matches in the past three years. Wingman Koulouriotis played three games in 2000 but had knee surgery at the end of that season and did not make an AFL appearance last year.

Scotty Bassett is damned unlucky - he always seems to pick up injuries just as he's about to break through into the side. I guess that's why he's only played 10 AFL games so far. Now the other contenders for the tall defender positions will get a head start on him...

saw that post just after my previous one.....and with Packo supposedly lining up with Centrals for their first SANFL game it will make it a little harder to break through.....

I also wonder if Chocco will give Lockwood a shot in the backlines during the pre season given the comments about his trial game.

Thats bad luck for Sea Bass. Hes a very unlucky person...always plays well when in the Power, but always gets injured.

As for Koula - well he is permanently injured anyway so thats no surprise

Speaking of permanently injures...how's Bowen going???
I see in the football record that his playing position is listed as a ruckman...interesting! Do u think his back could handle it???

I've been big wraps for Scott Bassett for years.....very disappointing that he keeps getting injured all the time.

As for Lockwood, he's got everything James Hird has......fair kick and mark, a lot of hype, and constant injury troubles ;) Hopefully he'll be able to get past that.

I wouldnt take any notice of what the record says:

Lockwood - Ruck
Matthew Bishop - Forward
Toby Thurstans - Ruck
Michael Stevens - defence
Poulton - midfield

every team has about 5 or 6 'wrong' positions in that record

Some good comments about the game and our defence. I also liked how Thurstans attacked the ball on the ground. I hope to see Morgan and S Burgoyne over the next 2 games.
